They asked for info but I think I'll just give my favorite Poe moment. A few months back, just before winter really kicked in here in Boston, Poe came and played a gig at the Cambridge Side Galleria. For those of you out of towners that is a large shopping mall in Cambridge. What was different about this show besides Poe playing a shopping mall and that it was free, is that She played on a boat. I mean the boat was a stage. There is a little inlet from the Charles river that comes behind the mall and is circular in shape. There in the center of this "pond" (which is probably about 120' across or so) was a boat. The crowd gathered for the afternoon show rounding about 100 degrees in front of the boat where moments later Poe and her band came in on a motor boat and boarded the stage. They started playing and well at that, Cameron was in fine form and all that. Poe's Mom was even there and we all said hi to her, though as my friend remarked to me there was no explanation as to why her life is a joke. Oh well. The concert went on and somewhere past the halfway mark it happened. Despite the chill in the air, despite the green algae ridden water and god knows what else is in the Charles we dove in. It was really my friends idea. I had thought of it but wouldn't have actually done it if he hadn't said, "Let's do it". So we dove in. The water was pretty nasty. By the time I came up for my first breath of air my friend was already at the boat shaking hands with Poe who had leaned over the side and reached out to him. He fell back in the water and I started on my way over. I got there and she was smiling down at me with a hand out and I figured to shake her hand too. My friend was already back at the shore climbing out. I reached up and she grabbed my hand saying, "come on up". So I did. It was great. I got to watch the rest of the show from the stage. They all threw their towels at me and they got a big kick out of it. It was nice to be able to do something, however childish, that could lighten their lives even a bit after all they have shared with me. A couple of songs later a hoard of people dove in and swam over, the boat and water littered with fans. All in all, it was not their best performance. It was cold and an odd sort of day, but it will always be the best concert moment I think I'll have. For a while at least. Oh, no signs of ill-health brought on by the little saurez through one of the most polluted rivers around. Not yet. We'll see what my kids turn out like. All for you Poe.. ;) Respectfully, Thomas D.
