When it came time to check out, I had a checker who was new (I have frequented this store for years, so I notice little things like this) Anyhow, when I got closer, I realized this lady looked VERY VERY VERY much like Poe, and mentioned it to my sister, who gave me an answer to the effect of "Yeah, right." Then she looked up and saw the checker, and instantly apologized. Anyhow, when we got closer, she had her name tag turned so you couldn't see her name, and, freakiness of freakiness, her silver necklace bore the sliver star we all know....the one from the PoeBall. I didn't really need this psycho test to know that I am angry. I am John Powell from Rockville, MD. I am 20 years old. I first heard Poe on WHFS 99.1. I listen to a wide variety of music including, Bob Dylan, The Doors old Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley,..etc. I love speed. I am addicted to going fast. Ever since Poes song came out >(My full name is Johnny, I don't think I have to tell you which song.) >anytime I walk into a room they start singing it. So heres my bio. Dear John, You make me glad I'm not 20 anymore! The older I get (I'm now 37), the less attractive anger becomes to me--especially my own. I find it a useless emotion, counter-productive to practically everything I want for myself and the world, and useful only for harmful purposes. Furthermore, I think it a "secondary" or compensatory emotion--one that masks the more primal emotions of pain and fear. Better, I think, to deal with the pain and fear directly--the anger will disipate on its own. Of course, there is "righteous anger", the anger we might feel seeing a child being bullied, or a people forcefully subjugated to tyrany, but even then isn't it wiser, not to mention healthier, to cultivate comppassion? I mean, what level of suffering must an abusive person have? The happy people I know aren't abusive, and the abusive people I know aren't happy. And the abusive people I know are in great pain, so great that they fear it and hide it behind their anger. The > only thing they have in common is the generation that spawned them. > Agree? Hrm. In a way, I'd have to agree. The Stones are about as unlike Marley, and Hendrix as unlike Joplin, and Doors unlike Dylan, as it's really possible to get. :) However, despite the superficial difference in sound and intent, the overall EFFECT and grounding of the music is the same; the same beats, technical experimentation, and tonality are used fairly consistently by each artist (with some differences, of course, as each tended to play around with their sound a bit), and listening to the Stones and then seguing into, say, Janis isn't nearly as jarring -- despite the real difference in meaning and spirit -- as moving towards Tupac or Metallica or even Paul Westerberg. The sound's just DIFFERENT. It's hard to explain.... Just so you know, Johnny, that's all pretty much the same variety of >music. *grin* > > Tom Well, Tom, I love 60s music, and don't find much in common between the people you mentioned. Dylan is folk, The Doors urban-rock, the Stones *one* band deserving of being acknowledged as "the" band first thought of when hearing "rock and roll", Hendrix was acid-rock through and through, Joplin was a blues-singer, and Marley reggae. The 60s were a social example of what's now being discussed as Complexity-theory, wherein at the edge of Chaos is where all sorts of possibilities appear--and the music reflected that. One might justfiably think of the Beatles as the greatest pop band ever, and Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead acid bands like Hendrix. Yet the Airplane, the Dead and Hendrix don't quite fall into the ear the same way. Another "pop" band, the Bee-Gees, have, at best, only the pretense of sounding like the Beatles. Same with folk--Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young don't sound like Simon & Garfunkle who don't sound like Peter, Paul and Mary who don't sound like Buffalo Springfield who don't sound like Melanie who doesn't sound like Joni Mitchell who doesn't sound like Arlo Guthrie. Creedence Clearwater Revival, another "rock 'n roll" band, has a sound quite distinct from the Rolling Stones. I guess you can tell that I don't like lumping things together, especially when the unique qualities of the bands mentioned are so glaringly apparent. Your statement makes me wonder if you think that Poe sounds like Bjork sounds like...
