I have one thing to say about this whole thing. Personally, I think the attitude of keeping Poe to ourselves is very selfish and childish. If you are a true fan of an artist, you will stick with them through thick and through thin (and that hasn't even begun with Poe yet)--whether they are uber-popular and playing huge arenas, or if they're still struggling and playing clubs. Music is Poe's chosen career and path in life, and we as her fans should encourage and help her to gain success! That's what a fan does. You stick up for her in arguements when people say "Poe sucks!" and you request her on the radio, and tell people about her, etc, etc. If you're just going to like her while she's "ours" (which she really isn't anyway, she's just kind enough to indulge her fans more than most artists do), you're just a pretentious wanker. Little Poe? It seems to me that the only relevant issue regarding our Psychotic Mistress's popularity is whether or not she retains her artistic integrity. Many bands "sell out", hoping to rake-in the big bucks (e.g. Blondie, who digressed from punk to disco to defunct), but there are others, the Beatles, for instance, who, despite their popularity, continued to create dynamic popular music by their own rules (personally, I find their later work, from "Rubber Soul" through "Abbey Road" to be far more satisfying than their earlier stuff). If Poe can succeed in a big way without cheapening herself or her music, more power to her! If, instead, she seeks the proverbial "lowest common denominator" and produces trash, I, for one, will stop listening. But from the interviews I've read on Jarrod's and others' pages, I believe she'll act with integrity as a matter of course, a matter of habit, a way of life...I don't believe it's within her to demean herself or the vision she presents to us. Yes, just look at Alanis Morisette. She was HUGE in Canada with her "pop" sound, but when she made her own sound, she became even larger, especially in the U.S. While it is true she has gotten so large that her shows at large venues sell out, she is still true to her original vision on "Jagged Little Pill". I saw her in concert in a small club in Portland (OR), and then a year later in the Rose Garden (the big stadium), and the shows were about the same. Of course, smaller venues are always better, but she didn't seem to have "sold out", and had the same performance style in the Garden as in the smaller club. +--------------------------------------------------+ | That government is best which governs the least, | | because its people discipline themselves. | +----------------------------+------------------+--+ --- hurtlee@pr.erau.edu --- | Thomas Jefferson | ----- edh@inorbit.com ----- +------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 15:10:38 -0500 (EST) From: PyroShwee@aol.com Subject: POE Boots if any one has any info on POE BOOTS, please e-mail me!!!! thanks, I appreciate it :) Ashley PyroShwee@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 15:29:17 -0500 From: Fertig Subject: Modeling photo's knowing that Poe did a little modeling in her day before she got big in = music..does anyone know if any of her photo shoot pictures are posted = on the net anywhere for veiwing? if so may I have the URL... spring-Mariah spring@poe.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Apr 1997 14:19:48 -0800 From: Jess Subject: NPR: quotes Can everybody send me some really good quotes (like in their sig or whatever?) I mean, alot of artists are or have been popular, and they still put out great music... Some artists are ruined by popularity, but that doesn't always happen... You mention Alanis, but I don't think that he music has changed since the massive popularity of JLP... what about U2, REM, ect...
