HI! I'm new, cantcha tell? Wow, i'm going from being a psychotic reveler to an angry psycho. Cool. OK, i'll explain that remark in a little bit. But i've been asked to answer a series of questions, so here they are! (1) Who you are?, Rob Vanatta, please to meet the rest of you! I use the alais "Mirror" in the poe chat on http://www.poe.org, which is sort of how I joined this thing, some people I was chatting with said I should and... ok here I am! :) (2) Where you're from?, Northern California. Chico to be exact. Chico is about 2 hours driving distance north of sacramento and about 3 NNE of San Fransisco. I attend the college here at California State University in Chico, majoring in computer science, but my permanent residence (where i am during breaks & such) is in Roseville, a town about 15 minutes E of sacramento. (3) How old you are?, 18. That makes me a freshman in college, and old enough to buy a lottery ticket :) (4) Where you first heard Poe?, Good Question. I first remember hearing her like at 12:30 in the morning one night after I was done listening to Loveline. The song was "Angry Johnny". I didn't know who it was, I just thought "cool song". I remember some guy in my dorm telling me sometime in Novemberish that I'd really like this artist named "Poe" he barely knows me, but he just knew I guess. I kind of brushed it off. Then over this past winter break, I saw the "Hello" video on MTV. I thought it was really cool, and then somehow i found out she also sang that "Angry Johnny" song, so I went and bought the CD. I listened to it sort of briefly, i didn't really pay any close attention to it, I just remember being upset that the Hello on the album wasn't the same one that I heard, and it made me think of how much i hate it when things aren't labeled as remixes or different versions. I was kind of like "What the fuck, hip hop?" So anyway, not too much later, I heard her on Loveline... i thought she was a really neat guest, very thoughtful, very helpful to the callers, and had some good things to say, and put up with Adam's humor quite well :) So, I gave the CD another listen, lots more carefully this time. WOW I liked it a lot. And, yes, I accepted the album version of Hello as another "intepretation" of the song, and ended up ENJOYING it after enough listens :) My favorite Poe tracks... uhh saying "All of them" is kind of a cop out huh? OK i guess i have to pick then, lets say "Fly Away", "That Day" and "Angry Johnny". No, i've never seen Poe in concert (the people on chat mentioned something about POE coming for a free concert in california on april 11th or something hmmm too bad i don't have a car). It's hard to say what attracts me to poe (other than good looks, right? :D ) probably her lyrics, her wicked sense of similies and metaphors and such. the Jedi mind tricks, the close-ups with Mr. Demille, the disconnected modems, and my favorite "The future is a slut" quote bit I'm sure you are all familiar with. She is a lyrical genius. You all already know that, right? :) She does some creative stuff musically too, but I'm eager to see what she will do with her band on her next album. She is using them on it right? (i think i read that somewhere) (5) What other musicians do you listen to? and Lots. This is where I get to explain the first sentence of this letter. I am a HUGE Alanis Morissette fan. I understand that there is a huge backlash against her after her becoming so "popular", so you may of cringed when I said that. I'm sorry you did, but thats life. I probably don't like all the artists that everyone else on this list likes, so I don't expect you to like all mine. All I ask is that we respect each others musical tastes. I won't knock on yours if you don't knock on mine k? Good, hope I didn't sound like a meanie :) Anyway, I'm also a member of AMML (alanis morissette mailing list), and sometimes we call ourselves "psychotic revelers", a term derived from a lyric to one of her "new" songs, "No Pressure over Cappuchino". Well, I've liked alanis ever since the day back in June when I first heard "You Oughta Know". Her album I bought soon afterword encircled me and filled me with emotion. It plain and simply changed my life. Anyway, if you like Alanis, e-mail me because thats TWO artists we both like! :) Bjork is my other "big favorite" her style of music is so different, she has a song to fit every mood. love it.. Tori Amos counts as a big favorite, though i've been listening to her less and less as I've been "discovering" these other artists. A shame, but I can only listen to so much. Tori still gets spun regularly in my CD player though :) Other favorites are Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow (going to see her next thursday, yeay!), Republica, Smashing Pumpkins, Tricky, Enya, Enigma, Stabbing Westward & Garbage. As far as retro is concerned, i LOVE Eurythmics... ABBA is great too, but it sucks being straight and liking ABBA because they seem to get associated with drag queens and such. I'm not saying thats bad, whatever fills your cup of tea... but we as a society should stop making such stereotypes. ABBA is good stuff. Disco! :) (6) Any other interesting information you wish to share. I talk a LOT. (have you noticed?) people call me a wordy person. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. People tell me it must be good because I can "bullshit essays" eaiser. Great. A hobby of mine is producing a sketch comedy/variety show for public access. The show is ENTIRLEY done by myself and one other person. Television is great, i love public access! :) Anyway, this does concern Poe. We did a "mock music video" to Poe... basically did another music video to "Angry Johnny". Yes it's legal ( i think... i HOPE) because we don't make any money off of it, and who really watches public access anyway? :) Anyway, to make a long story short, we got a complaint call because of the line "I want to kill you, I want to blow you away". The guy was like "Kids watch this blah blah blah." SUPRISE guy, the cartoon network is more violent at times than what we were doing. I would of been offended if I were Poe, but I'm sure she already gets it. Alanis had to go through it with her theatre line, I'm sure it's a rite of passage for musical artists (conterversial lyrics) ANYWAY... :) OK, I think I've taken enough time out of your day. I'm on the digest version of this list currently, just so ya know :) I check my mailbox a lot though. If you want to know more about me, just ask!! :) I hope to meet all of you and learn a little more about what makes poe so loveable :) Oh yeah, you can visit my homepage too at http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~rvanatta.
