Jarrod ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 00:42:04 -0800 (PST) From: Hell Cat Subject: What a NIght!!! Wow! I just got back from the POE show, and what can I say? I am on Cloud Nine. First, I run into Roger (rogerk) and we start passing out the angry psychos flyers, then we site trhough a REALLy boring band but we meet these two cool guys, One from the Art of Noise, and one from a Rock Zine, a friend of Poe's. Then we go to the front of the floor to make sure we have a good view of the show. Then the guy wemet earlier with the Zine came over and said MSNBC wants to interview you after the show. So of course Roger and I looked at eachother and said "right on" Finally, Poe comes on and she sees Roger and I, (I was waving the flyers), and she says, "first thing, I wanna say hi to the Angy-Psychos. I feel their presence everywhere here tonite" And she looks down at us and smiles. Well then she started with That Day, Just her and Cameron (so beautiful!) And proceded to play a rockin set. She looked at Roger and I alot. Anyway, if you've seen POE, you know what she does to a crowd. She took a bunch of sedate geeks, and turned them into Superfly freaks ;) Anyway, she stagedived during Dolphin and invited others to do the same. A guy took her up on it, but he jumped too far and kinda fell. She did a rose is a rose, and everybody was snapping- It was cool. Then when she did beautiful girl, I was the first girl she brought on stage. She brought up 2 other girls and danced with us, then she hugged me and I said I'll see you friday in Vegas, and she goes, "You're Awesome" So I got off stage and she did Angry Johnny and dedicated it to all the angry boys out there. After the show, the crowd was going so crazy that she came back out to do fingertips. Then she left the stage, and the stagemanager (maybe?) came up to us and asked if we were angry pychos, roger said yes, and he said POE wanted to see us upstairs. Well you can imagine how much we were freaking out. I couldn't believe it. So we went up and saw her. Well, she had a big hug waiting for us, and she said, you rock so much. you're awesome! Well, I said "you guys did such a great show" and they were so grateful. Poe offered us water soda beer whatever, they gave us posters and poe buttons. And Poe really wats us to be the official fan club... I mean really. Paul said he'd call me or Jarrod after Vegas to set it up!BTW, Jarrod, Poe thinks you're the greatest! So anyway, we were chatting with Poe and someone came up becuase the site wanted to do the interview right then. Poe was reluctant to let us go, and we tlaked for several more minutes. So the interview went really well, and it will be on the site in Mid april. They said they'd post to the list when it airs. Then after the interview, roger left, and talked to some friends, then we went outside and I talked to Cameron for a bit, who by the way, plaayed the most incredible cello solo! Cameron was being very silly and playing with a dead car seat... then we started talking about movies and he recommended slingblade (which I want to see anyway) He's really exicted that we're going to be in Vegas, and he's ready to party with us (so is poe) Anyway, I am so tired, but if you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them tomorrow night. Take care, and I am SO f*ing proud to be an angry psycho! Angy psychos Rock on! Here's where I reveal myself as Old Man Angry Psycho! I'm 37 (cringe!), am balding, have several white whiskers in my beard and nearly-discernable grey patches at my temples. I first heard Poe about 2 months on Denver's alternative music video show, "Teletunes" which, by the way, was around before MTV! They broadcast an interview with her, then showed the video for "Angry Johnny." I bought the CD the next day, and searched the net for more info. That's how I stumbled on you guys. "Teletunes" is also where I discovered Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Sugarcubes (w/Bjork), and several more of my favorite bands. About myself: I work for a nonprofit health education corporation that trains teachers on health ed curricula. Really, though, I'm a poet, or at least aspire to be. I've written poetry for 25 years, have published in over 50 periodicals (several recently on the net), and have also published two books. My 3rd should be out late this year or early next. I'm engaged to the modern dancer, Julie McKinney--she dances with Kim Robards Dance Company (in case you don't know, modern dance is like ballet, only more expressive and less "stiff"). I also collect art--all originals, mostly abstracts (but not exclusively--I've also several portraits, "landscapes", still lives, etc.). I'm also a co-founder of the Kama Writers Workshop on the internet--poetry and fiction. SOURCE: Billboard. v107 n35, Sep 2, 1995, p. 14. 1/3 pages PUBLISHER: BPI Communications ISSN: 0006-2510 TEXT: Section: Artists & Music ATLANTIC'S POE WILL BE UNFAMILIAR NEVERMORE International Singer Says 'Hello' With Eclectic Debut NEW YORK--Poe has led a peripatetic life, living in Africa, India, Europe, and the U.S. She became an emancipated minor at 16, going from Manhattan squatter to Princeton scholar, and became a poet,' dancer, model, and musician. These experiences have been distilled into her Modern/Atlantic debut, "Hello," which is as eclectic as her life. The Oct. 10 release was recorded in Detroit and Los Angeles with a revolving cast of collaborators ("Music is a team sport," says the singer,' whose nickname comes from her fondness for Edgar Allen Poe. "I'm always willing to listen to ideas, but I have the final say.") The songs on "Hello" range from the folk/funk of "Trigger Happy Jack" to the guitar and heavily amplified cello arrangement of "That Day" to the cool yearning of the title track. Michael Krumper, VP of product development at Atlantic, doesn't see Poe's eclecticism as a problem. He feels that once listeners are "drawn in by a song, they're willing to follow the artist in [her] steps." And Paul Fishkin, Modern's CEO/president, is confident that if "Trigger Happy Jack," the album's first single, doesn't break through, Poe's combination of strong material and natural charm will win fans over. Fishkin talks from experience: He signed Poe after one meeting and a quick listen to her demos. According to Poe, when they met at Fishkin's L.A. office, he sat on the floor, listened to her tape, chatted for a few minutes, and then told her, "OK." She was at first unsure if that meant she was signed. I didn't know if the meeting was over, or what," she laughs. Fishkin concurs with this account (he remembers, however, getting off the floor and sitting at his desk), adding that he decided to make Poe one of the Atlantic imprints two artists (the other is Stevie Nicks), because it was immediately apparent to him that she had all the tools. "She's talented, she's bright, looked great, had great songs and a lovely voice." To top it off, he says, "When you meet her, it's obvious she's a star." Fishkin feels that Poe is an artist who will benefit from personal contact. Joanne Molino, product manager at Atlantic, agrees, adding that once people hear Poe's music, they're usually "intrigued by her and really want to work with her." But the label is taking the cautious approach. Although Krumper says Poe is a strong performer, she is just now getting a touring band together, and only West Coast dates are being planned. The label will initially work alternative radio and clubs. Krumper says that "Trigger Happy Jack" has a good chance to become a club hit, so, in addition to the version on the album, three Steve Lyon remixes of the song will be available on 12-inch vinyl for clubs and as an extended play CD single for radio and retail. Because Krumper feels that a club hit does not necessarily translate into personal recognition, posters and other point-of-purchase materials will be distributed. Posters and other promotional materials will also be used to promote the album at retail. Both Krumper and Molino are wary of in-stores for new artists, but such performances are a possibility if sales and airplay reach an unspecified threshold. A limited number of "meet and greets" are in the offing; advance copies of the album will be widely available for in-store play. One area on which the label will concentrate is the online world. A dedicated 'net surfer (the album's title track takes the Internet as a metaphor for personal relations), Poe has designed her own World Wide Web site. Visitors to the site will have access to the video and Poe's stories and songs, in addition to the usual tour and release information. Molino says the label is also interested in exploring the possibility of CD- ROMs. The Web site, the album, and all promotional material will be visually connected by an icon or logo that Molino ca/Is the "Poe ball," a mirror ball superimposed with Poe's name, with the "0" replaced by a star that contains Poe's portrait. While Poe looks forward to the release of "Hello," her mind is already racing to her next project. Fishkin is looking ahead with her. Of some artists, he says, "When you first hear them, you have to decide if the album's a beginning of something or an end. 'Hello' is just a beginning." POE was here once back in september, and i missed my chance. seems like she's never coming back here!!! (POE COME BACK HERE!!!!!!!!!!) don't do ALL west coast shows!! and if she does i'm scared she'll be doing like arenas and stuff and then i'll never get to meet her! oh well...this sucks. i'm in a bad mood. sorry to dump my shit on you. i hope my depression doesn't spark another debate like the sucide BANG! thing did. back to studying now...... good nite all : ) ~brette "fighting for peace is like f*cking for virginity" ~anonymous ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 23:23:15 -0500 From: owner-angry-psychos@smoe.org Subject: [none] (8.8.5/UCD3.8.5) id UAA20092; Tue, 4 Mar 1997 20:15:11 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <340F7A43.44A6@ucdavis.edu> Date: Thu, 04 Sep 1997 20:19:31 -0700 From: Jeremy Abramson Reply-To: jdabramson@ucdavis.edu Organization: Schizoid Productions X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.01 (Win16; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: angry-psychos@smoe.org Subject: Everything you wanted to know about Loserboy, but were afraid to ask.... Hello. I was sitting here watching "Lovelines" on Mtv and when they returned from a commercial they showed a promo spot with POE. You know, she says something like "Hi. I'm POE and you're watching Lovelines". Anyhow, we all know that she was on there a month or so ago, right? She had on a red leather jacket... Well, in this clip she had on a white-tight t-shirt with writing on it that said something about the Sex Pistols and her hair was almost completely straight with a braid in the front. So, I guess the point of this letter is: Does anyone know if she will be on "Lovelines" again and, if so, when will it air? It apparantly looks like she did another taping of the show. Hummmmm. Take Care. Tony Cusumano ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Mar 1997 22:11:00 -0800 From: "Evan E. Zelig" Subject: Poe tour? Well, since I posted that the POE / BUSH tour will not be happening, many people have been e-mailing me wanting to know if ANY Poe tour will be happening in the future? As of now, I have no information on this but I will be seeing the people from both Modern and Atlantic records on Thursday and will try to find out some information on this at that time. Until then... ============================================================================ Evan E.
