Since releasing those results, an additional 8 people voted by the deadline of January 31. Mea culpa! The following document is final and accurate. Psychotically yours, Padma ooooooo Angry Psychos Poll: Their Favorite Individual Artists & Bands Overview A poll was conducted by Padma Thornlyre amongst Poe fans who subscribe on the Internet to Angry Psychos (APs), a Poe fan chat list, to determine what musicians (bands and individual artists) were the APs' all-time favorites. Out of 215 APs, 58 voted, yielding a response rate of 27%. While Poe, of course, topped the polling, the total band/musician count was an astonishing 259-many of whom I had either never heard of before, or had heard of but never heard. Methods APs were asked to submit a list, ranked 1-10, of their all-time favorite musical artists. All first place votes were awarded 10 points, second place votes 9 points, and so on down to 10th place votes which were awarded a single point. Many bands represented in the list were echoed by the individual artists who played with them. Not wanting to deflate anyone's total score, I took the liberty of combining the artist/band in these instances. For example, John Lennon is listed under The Beatles/John Lennon, Lisa Gerrard under Dead Can Dance/Lisa Gerrard, and Bjork under Sugarcubes/Bjork. In all cases, the band is listed first, the individual last-this for the sake of continuity, and is not intended to imply that a band is more valuable or valued than an individual performer. Because I myself did not recognize every name that came through, it's quite possible that an artist I don't know is listed individually, and separately from her/his band. If that's the case, please e-mail me and I will make the correction. Not all respondents provided a list of ten. Those who provided less than ten had their rankings reflected from 1st place (10 points) down to the lowest number they actually ranked (e.g. a 5th place finish was given 6 points). Those who provided more than ten had their 10th place and all subsequent "places" awarded a single point. Because this is not a scientific poll, this more "liberal" method seemed fair and more fun. There were several ties. To avoid the appearance of personal prejudice, all ties are recorded alphabetically. The requirements of tabulating this poll were far more overwhelming than I expected. I developed no means to ensure against double-voting; but as APs are a family, I felt they deserved the benefit of the doubt. If any double-voting did occur, those who double-voted will know that the higher rankings of their favorite artists are artificially inflated. Again, I doubt this happened. Observations Not surprisingly, Poe herself topped the polling with a whopping 332 total points. APs are incredibly diverse in their musical tastes-nearly every musical "genre" was represented to one degree or another: classical, jazz, country/western, rap, and easy listening all had their fans amongst APs. Most APs, though, are dyed-in-the-wool rockers! Most, too, have very contemporary tastes, although several "older" bands/musicians were represented. Delightfully surprising to me is that one older band, in particular, enjoys widespread popularity amongst APs, more than a quarter century since they disbanded, and a good 30 years since they released the most pivotal album in rock history-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. I refer, of course, to the Beatles, who landed in 6th place. Curious, but not surprising, women artists are well-represented in this poll, proving that Angry Psychos are a non-gender-biased family. A certain drama unfolded about halfway through the polling, when Nirvana held a firm grip on 2nd place. Tori Amos kept climbing the poll, and then surpassed Nirvana in voting-and never looked back. Conclusion It's doubtful that every Angry Psycho is intimate with the music of everyone who received votes. I heartily encourage each and every one of you to scan this list for ideas on what to purchase next time you visit a music store-perhaps even take a chance on music you don't know (that's exactly what I did with Poe-I saw one video and thought, "Hmm, I do like her voice;" and you can guess the rest of that story!). Poe, if you read this, know that you are in our hearts, our dreams, and our hopes for the future. Keep the music comin'!
