Last time I checked this > country was a democracy and I'd appreciate it remaining one. > > Joseph Sometimes I wonder if some of you guys have any fucking clue at all. What y'all are after isn't the right to free speech. You want a guaranteed audience. Go to your local newspaper and demand that they print whatever you decide to drool that day. See what reaction you get. But you have no qualms about demanding that from the person running the list. So what if he wants to set any kind of guidlines as far as usage of the list. So what if he's paying for it. So what if maybe he invisions it being used differently than you do. Fuck him. You want to talk about what you want to talk about, and if you feel like talking today about the consistancy of your stool than as the owner of a list it is his job to desseminate to the world that today you're running light brown and kind of runny. Want to talk about something? You've got tens of thousands of newsgroups, web pages, irc, etc., some of which are even devoted to WHAT YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT. Christ, pick any subject in the world and chances are you will find ten newsgroups and three mail lists where discussion of that subject is exactly on- point. Hell, if you wanted to started a TAN-AP list you could do it. Just hit smoe or lsoft or any other isp offerring list service and you could be up and running Monday afternoon. Do it on your own quarter instead of somebody else's. You want free speech on AP? Fine, I'll forward to the list my 10 page manifesto about how the stupid, dishonest Jews are taking over the world. And my daily updates on Yid exploitation of good Christians around the world. And maybe I'll throw in a couple of pictures of naked ten-year olds. After all: > censorship is used to block out what the person doing the > censoring doesn't want to see, hear, or read...because the deem it > wrong. How do we know what one person thinks should be censored is > also what someone else would think? At this point there are hundreds of thousands of avenues of communication on the net. With the Decency Act on hold, there isn't much you can't talk about on the net. The only question is where. Now, everybody subbed to this b/c they wanted to talk about and hear about Poe. Those that are bitching about having a list topic enforced at all, I have to ask something: why did you sub to the list? Why didn't you just join a sailboat list and start talking about Poe. Why did the listowner bother starting a Poe list? Why didn't he just join the 4AD list and start posting about Poe and tell other Poe fans to do the same thing? Why bother having separate lists and newsgroups at all. Just turn on your computer and have piped to your INBOX everything typed into the net that day. The reason why you didn't do that is you want some control over what you have to wade through each day. Tell you what. Go now and look up www.lsoft.com. Pick out 250 lists at random, subscribe to them, stay subbed to them, and I'll never complaint about you again. (btw, when you talk about censorship there is usually some aspect of prior restrain. In other words, the censor either prevents you from saying what you want to say or punishes you later for having said it, hoping that will keep you quiet in the future. With majordomo, there isn't really a convenient way to implement this if anyone wanted to. Unless you set the list to requiring the listowner to approve before- hand each post, you can't stop anything from being sent to the list. That's a big pain in the ass for the listowner. All you can do is screen out people that aren't subbed to the list, and even if you manually unsub someone they can always just resub and continue posting. So posting guidelines--esp. on a majordomo-run list--are voluntary, co-operative efforts. It pretty much counts on list subscribers having a bare minium of respect for the person footing the bill for the list.) btw, on one of my lists I had one guy harrassing female list subscribers and another one forwarding commercial spams. I guess you think I should have left both them alone, since by chucking them I was destroying their rights of free speech. (Of course, those are listserv lists. With listserv, if someone is a pain in the ass you can do everything short of dropping a nuke on their house.) Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 00:54:30 -0600 From: Tom Davidson Subject: I just thought... ...it was worth noticing that there's a fair amount of variety on the posts here. Despite all the predictable "faves" (like Garbage, Tori, and Elastica), we've got tastes ranging from Hank Williams to Pantera -- and that's in one man's post alone. *grin* It's reassuring to note that MTV hasn't achieved total homogenization of the culture yet. :) Tom ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 01:01:29 -0600 From: Tom Davidson Subject: Post Guidelines It's entirely within the rights of the editors to decide what they want to allow in this mailing list, everyone. If they want to limit discussions to Poe-related topics because SOME idiots aren't able to decide whether or not they want to read a message until they've reached its end (I'm partisan on this, obviously), it's their prerogative. In fact, those idiots might, in fact, argue that this would make the list better, that a Poe list should be about Poe and maybe music and maybe Poe-related art, but certainly nothing else. Of course, those idiots wouldn't be considering the impact that other issues frequently have on music and art in general. Those idiots would also not be thinking about how amazingly DULL a mailing list that orbited around Poe would really be: "Poe has a concert in Chicago on the 11th." "I saw Poe's concert in Phoenix. It was great!" "Hey, does anyone know where I can find Poe bootlegs?" "I love Poe. She's pretty, and the band's great." "I love Poe, but I like the Cure better." "How DARE you like the Cure better? Poe is God!" ...and so on. If rambling off-subject is what's needed to inject life into what otherwise would resemble a 'zine update, then heading off-subject is a GOOD thing. IMHO, that is. Of course, people should keep the subject of the list in mind when posting; this isn't a "crap I happened to be thinking about today" mailing list. *grin* But if we get 40 messages about a subject and only 10 of them are worth reading -- and if only 3 of them are about Poe -- isn't that better than just getting 3 messages about Poe? It's not like having to delete a message is THAT much work. (Majordomo keeps the digest separate from the loose list, so you can be subbed to both at the same time. You don't switch from loose to digest, you unsub from one and sub to the other.) First....I saw the Counting Crows..which Fiona Apple opened...I didn't think it was all that great..Fiona kept talking about high school..and well...I don't even want to comment on that...I enjoy the Counting Crows music..but it seems like he really doesn't have that stage presence...he didn't really play with the crowd...like how poe does...oe Gwen does....Even Courtney Love played with the crowd more... Second, I have the Poe video recorded..along with the new NIN video (which is very awesome) Actually..both videos are awesome and I really enjoy the version that Poe did in the Video.. Third, Does anyone think it would be possible to have a HUGE get together..like say when her new album comes out or something..and get as many AP's in one place at one time...and, with tremendously large hopes..having Poe there to celebrate with us?? And Finally, Anyone in Dallas/Ft. Worth..want to try to throw a party when Poe comes into town again? Maybe if we could really pull it together...rent a banquet hall or something and invite Poe and her band? Thank you for your time... -Christina ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V2 #36 **********************************
