I realize that this post is long, but it really has several purposes, and what I'm saying is more important and more in-depth than most of the things I usually post about. This is a multi-purposed post (designed to save space). I am actually writing this with a somewhat heavy heart. You see, I went to Canada for the long weekend. I was driving around in Vancouver thinking about you all. How we have some sort of a cohesive groups, how reliable and friendly you all are. I even thought of popping into some of the record stores to see if they had Poe's album. I had what I considered to be a great idea, and I was excited to get home and run it by y'all. So I get home and check my email, several hundred messages. And what is the topic of 2/3 of them? Topics that never needed to have been addressed. I am watching us disintegrate, watching us spiral down into immature bickering and unneccessary rudeness. I don't want to see Sam leave. Perhaps we should take it as a clue that one of the most mature people on the list called it quits. Personally, I am giving this list a WEEK to get its shit together (sorry, I usually refrain from swearing in public posts). Otherwise, I am out of here. Yes, I do have something to say, by the way...I have an interesting idea. You see, this summer, I am taking a month-long driving trip around the country. I should hit a good portion of the states. Anyway, I was thinking that perhaps I could give this trip a Poe-related edge. I would really be interested in personally meeting some of the Angry-Psychos. Perhaps I will be able to take my mother's laptop with me and update my page from the road with personal insight about some of the Angry-Psychos I meet. Perhaps also, I could catch Poe in concert a few times on my trip also. I really would like some feedback about this. The aforementioned trip would probably occur in July. I would like to address the ever-so-controversial issue of non-relation to Poe in list posts. Until now, I have restrained my opinion. I think that last sentence is important. I would like you all to reflect on the amount that useless messages would be reduced if AP's could just either a) not respond to every post that irritates or provokes them, or b) remember the golden rule: PRIVATE EMAIL. I am not opposed to tangents at all. Inherently, they mostly spring forth from something originally about Poe, and, personally, I would get pretty bored if all I read about was Poe's music. The woman only has one album. As for issues like suicide: I hope that no one flames me, as I mean no disrespect at all, but I don't think that serious discussion of this is appropriate in a list format. I am very concerned about AP's that are considering killing themselves, and would be more than glad to talk to them privately, but announcing one's plans to off onesself to an unmoderated group of hundreds of people seems a bit like an attention scheme. As for the vegetarian/meat argument, I've had just about enough of that. Neither side is suddenly going to begin respecting the other's opinion, or, even if they do, they aren't going to suddenly change sides. No one is going to win this. And, also, no more two-word posts. No more of this "I agree with so-and-so about such-and-such" or "you go girl" or whatever affirmations (or negations) we feel for a previous post. Remember the golden-private-email-rule. Please. Don't think that I don't care. I think about you all daily, about the people on this list with whom I've corresponded, about your input to my Poe page, about the AP's that I consider my FRIENDS, not just some people on a mailing list. Please don't destroy each other. I apologize for the length of this, but I did put a lot of thought into it (and time). Many years ago, after my marriage to my 1st wife was over, I became very suicidal--I called a hotline, and spoke to a "Jana" for several hours. I can honestly say that had I not been so intimately connected to music, I would probably have offed myself at least twice during my life; once when I was in my late teens or early 20s, and more recently, about 3 years ago when events seemed to cascade over me like a swimmer in storm conditions. I definately owe a good deal of gratitude to artists like Poe, who because of their willingness to share their own experiences and perspectives, coupled with genuine talent, gave me what I couldn't give myself: A feeling of comfort and connection with others facing similar shit. It is not surprising that artists like Poe make such a strong connection with their audience. It's a two-way street. There is no artist without a fan. A debatable concept to be sure, but that's how I see it. So thanks Poe, Roger Waters and Pink Floyd, Return to Forever, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Yes, Genesis, Supertramp, and many others too numerous to mention. In response to the question "What is it like to go to a Poe concert ...?" I finally had the chance to see Poe live in August in a bar in San Antonio (for $5!). The place was packed, and I was one of the last few people the bouncers let in before the bar was at its capacity. I had never really read anything about Poe, or seen a picture of her at this time. I don't know why, but I was totally expecting someone to come out dressed in full black with chains and thick black eyeliner or something (seems stupid now). And I guess I thought Poe would be kind of aloof and mysterious too. As you know, I couldn't have been further from the truth. When Poe did rush out on stage, I didn't even think it was her at first. The PSYCHO tank-top clued me in though. The first thing she did, before she even began playing, was jump into the audience. When the security guards finally pulled her back onto the stage, and I'll never forget this, she said, "I thought I should come out and say hi." Ha! And that was how the best concert I've ever been to began. Poe made the audience feel like they were as much of the concert as her music was. For example, she commented on how she liked the "dolphin dance" some girls in the audience were doing during the song, and was always reaching out to touch people. After that night, I had a whole new appreciation for Poe, both as a musician and as a person. I've never known of anyone who cares about their fans as much as she does (who else would sacrifice their Thursday night trying to chat with their fans, despite some idiot wanna-be hacker and a computer that kept crashing???). I don't know why I had thought Poe would be aloof and mysterious, and had kind of chalked it up to my own stupidity, until I talked to a friend who said that he had the same impression. So I was wondering... for those of you out there who saw your first Poe concert without knowing a whole lot about her... Were your expectations different from how she really is? In summary, if you are unfortunate enough to never have been to one of her concerts... do so at all costs! If you live in Montana or something, drive a million miles to see her. It will be worth it, I promise! If you love her now, you will love her 10 times more after you see her on stage.
