I saw Poe at the Irving Plaza here in New York; a good show (my first, and I'm none too familiar with her material outside of the few cuts I have on the Spew compilations). Must say I was rather taken with Eels, her second opener (first was Stir). Enjoyed the show a lot, although the pit was a little more violent than I like it--but what would you expect from angry psychos, anyway? I suppose I'm a bit sensitive to that sort of thing, as a short person right in bony-elbow range. She crowd-surfed twice, and the second looked poised to become a massive group grope. She left the stage immediately on being deposited back there and there was no encore, and I wondered if that was her usual manner or if there was a bad vibe from the crowd that kept her off. Tracy Bonham's pit a few days later was much nicer, lots of communal feeling and people out to have a good thumpy time without leaving casualties. Interesting contrast. I'm seeing Patty Griffin tonight here in New York--as you know from other lists. (Got your off-list message, and will try to deliver it.) Assuming there are still tickets, I've been lazy about getting down to the Bottom Line in advance. "Angry Johnny" (album version - 4:19) 2. "Angry Johnny" (band version - 4:58) 3. "Trigger Happy Jack" (drive by remix - 3:47) it is a typical generic promo, plain disc with black type (but, with poe logo!) back insert is black and white, no picture... no front insert, just black and white sticker with tour dates, again, no picture. the band version is excellent! was recorded with her touring band and produced by matt sorum. i got mine from an advertiser in "goldmine" magazine... but, for those who don't know where to find it, here is the info you need to get one: Brouhaha Compact Disc Collectibles 2168 S. LET YOUR HEART NOT BE TROUBLED, NEITHER LET IT BE > AFRAID: (JOHN 14:27) MAKE A SONG WITH THAT STATEMENT IN IT AND GOD WILL > GLORIFY YOU. First off, Hi everyone! I'm new to the list. 2nd, I totally believe in free speech and no one has the right to tell you to remove anything from the net unless it's illeagal (Copyrights e.t.c) or your server tells you to. 3rd, I don't think it's as much as parents should watch their kids, you can't blame them for the immaturity of their unsurpervised children. Are all you adults going to tell me that your parents were perfect and could watch everything you did? But I think only people with enough good judgment should be allowed to browse the net. I myself, being a teen, love the free speech of the net. But there are some things I draw the line on for myself. I have some profanity on my home page, but not because I call it "Cool" or anything, it's expressing myself through the lyrics of another artist I like, Alanis Morissette. My parents are fine with almost any music I listen to, but they (My mom mainly) were a little against Poe when I rushed out and bought the CD after hearing "Angry Johnny", they didn't like the song (my dad does though), and thought it had no meaning. I don't know, maybe it does. But I like her music, and there were a couple songs that had a lot of meaning. When I told my parents of her Bio, they changed their tune a bit. As of now, I wait for the final words on free speech, if there ever is an end to the battle, and I keep expressing myself to adults and teens on the net through my music and thoughts. Sorry if you don't like that this message didn't discuss Poe that much, but usually when I see anything of free speech, I make a statement. I have been to one Poe concert on October 1, 1996, where I met and hung out with Poe. I'm currently employed as an accountant for a CPA firm. Some other artists I listen to are: Jewel (I was at JewelStock), Tori Amos, Milla, Sarah McLachlan, Leah Andreone, Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette. So, I plead with everyone to temper their replies. Yes, yes- this Marilyn Soucie is apparently internet-ignorant and narrow-minded (read her second paragraph!), so lets try to show her that this kind of solicitation is just a little to naive to be intelligent. =) PLEASE, everyone reply to that letter (to the address: ). But write your letters intelligently and with resolve, in order to try to gently show her the error of her ways. I will post my letter when I finish it, but that will prob- ably be a few days (to make sure I'm not being hot-headed in my reply). Points I plan to touch on are: -- It is the responsibility of the parent to monitor their own children, no one elses. This applies to all forms of media: TV, radio, movies, books, friends. For the parent to expect others to temper their expression so that she can be lax in her responsibilty is negligent. -- Why was she looking through the internet for offensive material (in her opinion)? There are more worthwhile expen- ditures for her time. It looks like her eyes are turned downward! =) See? Obviously, I am no condition at the moment to compose a sensible, level headed letter and so I will let it cool for a few days. BUT, it is important to respond. These folks need to know in fair manner that their unsolicited letter is as offensive to us as that picture was to her. =) Thank you for letting me blow steam. I feel better. =) BTW, to those of you who don't know me from EDA or noticed me lurking on Ecto: Hi!
