I had tix to see her last month in Ventura, Ca and they had to have a fire and postpone the show, so needless to say I haven't had the opportunity to see her. Then the local station here is putting on its annual X-mas show & she is playing the first night, the 13th, and needless to say I can't go. They are doing a girls night on the 13th and a guys night the 14th. Who ever said women first, cuz I can go the 14th. Sorry for the complaint, but I am dying to see her. And someone beat me to it, but my fave songs are That Day and Fly Away too. Anyone else live in L.A. and heard the version of Hello they are playing here? It is different & took me a little getting used to, but I like the CD version better. On another note, does anyone know if there are any cd imports from Germany or Japan? Thanks, Erika ___________________________________________________________ "It makes sense that it should feel just this way That you slowly fade and yet still remain- as if to say Everything matters In such an invisible way as if to say-Fly Away- It's ok. *** Poe*** ___________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ From: Rod D Roscoe Date: Wed, 20 Nov 1996 15:53:09 -0500 (EST) Subject: alanis you know what? i like alanis. 1) so poe is overlooked on the radio and by the populace, that's not alanis's fault, call your radio station and spread the power of Poe by word of mouth 2) so alanis is overplayed on the radio, that's not her fault either.. call up your radio stations and complain 3) music tastes are subjective, if you don't like someone's music that does not automaticaly make it "bad" music (unless you have all of a sudden become an expert in music theory) 4) when did this become a bash-alanis list? remember.. the common bond here is that we all love poe.... that's the point. i'm sure that there are hate-alanis lists out there for the rest of you - --would you like some SALT with those french fries? --- rod --- ------------------------------ From: "J.Beadle" Date: Wed, 20 Nov 1996 15:25:11 -0800 Subject: Re: compsongs My fav is Choking The Cherry. - -Landon ------------------------------ From: jbeu@macalester.edu Date: Wed, 20 Nov 1996 15:32:28 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: poe/alanis Hi. I don't usually post, but this subject has made me angry enough to. Poe is awesome. We all agree. Case closed. Alanis, however much you might hate her, has talent too. A lot of talent. 13 million plus people believe she has talent. There are some arguments that have been brought up against Alanis that I want to respond to: 1) The argument that she was a pop star first. Yes, she was. I also liked Vanilla Ice for a while. Does this mean that I am not allowed to like Poe and Alanis and can only listen to wannabe white rappers? No. People are allowed to change. 2) The argument that her crowd is a bunch of teenyboppers. Well, guess what, folks, so is Poe's. I went to her concert at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and there were more 13-year-olds than you could shake a stick at. This argument does not mean that the music is any less powerful or meaningful, just that 13-year-olds may have some taste. 3) The argument that Alanis is out to make money, whereas Poe is "real." I'll bet Poe isn't just out there for the hell of it. She puts out albums with the goal of making some money, and making a few people happy too. Same with Alanis. Otherwise they would tour for free and give out albums to everyone they see. 4) The argument that Alanis' success was a calculated marketing ploy. This is absolutely not true. It is like saying if Hello makes it big, that Poe was planning all along for it to become huge. Poe made music, Alanis made music, and people liked it. Alanis got big because she had good songs, and Poe will get big for the same reason. Those are all of the arguments I can think of right now, but if you have more, I would be glad to discuss them too. You don't have to like her, and I agree she has been overplayed on the Radio, but about 75% of the people on this list are one the Alanis list, and we don't apreciate your comments not relating to poe, or at least I don't. Talk about the bandwagon. "Poe is the greatest talent ever! Alanis sucks!" Look, Poe may have talent, but "Hello" is obviously a debut work; she needs a lot more experience (a lot of which was gained on tour, I understand). There are lots of times on "Hello" where she came achingly close to really really good tunes, only to screw them up. Now look, I love Poe, wouldn't be an angry-psycho if I wasn't, but I'm not going to pretend that she's a megatalented superwoman. As for whoever it was who was disgusted by people not knowing any song but what they play on the radio--what's yr problem, man? I wish I could go to a concert and hear only 4 songs that I've heard before. That would be great. What if they heard her on the radio, but weren't certain enough that they liked her to buy an album? What if they're like my friend Tim, who goes to any and all concerts he can, to check out a band and see if they're good? This kind of elitist crap makes me really angry. As for Alanis, who cares about her? This is a Poe mailing list. Talk about Poe. Or if you're going to compare the two, do it and for fuck's sake move on. Why do we have to hear ten people say the same thing? Come on, people! Get with it!
