Is everybody thinking of what questions they will ask POE Thursday night? We really should mention the angry-psychos list quite a bit so she could learn more about it/us. You know? Anyhow, I thought I would type out an interview with POE that was in the summer issue of a magazine called "COVER". Incidentally, POE is on the cover. I looked on the POE web pages and I didn't see this article. So here it is. Enjoy! From: TONY CUSUMANO - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------- HELLO POE With A Show-Driven Fan Base, Poe's Laid Back Pop Matches A Sultry Summer Fashion Express... By Rosemary Grillo It's hard to call Poe, a native New Yorker, a newcomer to the rock 'n' roll pop world. Her sultry voice, intuitive lyrics and haunting melodies have been around for about ten years. Her name is a constant opening topic. "It's ambiguos, neither feminine, nor masculine, solo nor a band, just Poe," she says. Of course, the influence is the poet Edgar Allen Poe and mostly fueled by her obsession with Edgar's 'The Masquerade Of The Red Death'. After touring for almost a year with the likes of Lenny Kravitz and Seven Mary Three, she sits down to talk. WHAT ARE THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF THE ATTENTION AND THE TOURING? POE: I love talking to people, I have really cool fans. I've made friends in every city and it's not like I'm so huge, that I can't get away from it. The best kind of attention is when you're performing and having people that you've never seen before mouthing the words to your moment. I stand there looking at them saying Hey! maybe I'm not crazy, someone gets this and relates to it. It makes sense. It's a moving experience. I don't know if I'll ever get used to that. WHAT MAKES THIS ALBUM 'HELLO' SO SPECIAL? POE: I believe in its honesty. It really travels to a lot of worlds. I grew up all over the place, I was influenced by everyone. It never made sense to me to take on one identity musically. To be "like I'm a folk singer." "I'm an alternative rock singer" or "I'm a hip hop singer"... I found those titles limiting and in the same way the titles ask anyone who is creative to be incomplete. So it really goes from one spectrum to another. "Hello", which has reference to the Internet demanded a machine-driven beat. "That Day" is a very personal and structured like a letter. Then "Trigger Happy Jack" is about a psycho. I had to have bone head quitars, hardcore. WHAT WERE YOUR INFLUENCES? POE: My parents divorce, my mother leaving was enormous. That was an event (the divorce) which called into question everything that I had taken for play as a woman or as a man to what a domestic living arrangement is all about, to the issues of truth vs. lies, to the kind of masks people wear. Your parents provide you with a certain consistency within your life and a reassurance of your identity. Without that I felt like I was floating in a void. At that point music and writing songs was the only thing. It was my own little record of who I was, where I came from, what I was thinking and feeling. WOULD YOU CALL YOURSELF AMBITIOUS? POE: I'd call myself desperate. I've been desperate since the minute I left home. And nothing will change that feeling. I always feel like the world can drop under my feet at any given moment. ANY ADVICE? POE: My advice is to take control of absolutely everything in your career and life. Don't let other people make decisions because you think they know you better than you do. Take a long time to learn whose advice you trust and respect. There's a lot of people who will tell you what to do. Do what you want to do --- record it on a 4 track in your house, what the hell, you want to do it that way, you're going to be right. WHAT'S YOUR FONDEST MEMORY TO DATE? POE: I have two: when I was about 3 or 4 years old. I was walking down the street in NYC with my mother and we stopped at a stop light. And my mom was holding my hand, and she looked at my hand, and said "you have the most beautiful hands," and I just remember having this feeling of such warmth, connection, safety and love that I've never forgotten. The other one was when my dad was sick (he passed away about 4 years ago). I couldn't go as far, and finally shortly before he died he could only make it to my shoulder, he was so frail, and it was the most beautiful sunset that I've ever seen in my entire life, and there was this one tree cut out, and this incredible sky, I remember standing there and he had his head on my shoulder, not wanting to move. We stood there for almost 40 minutes. Those are the moments, where there is no BS, no neurosis separating the love that can exist between two people. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? POE: My music, desperation...not miserable desperation, I'm not depressed. I'm just compelled. {END} ------------------------------ From: Lonn_Johnston@pmug.org (Lonn Johnston) Date: 14 Nov 1996 15:37:38 GMT Subject: Re: angry-psychos-digest V1 #33 This is an automated message. " tape tree?" "what's that?" or, "i want in, what's on it?".... you will have to post publicly and ask for help in getting a copy of this tape. i'm sure someone will "adopt a newbie" after they receive their copy of the tape. - --------- Begin forwarded message ---------- From: agentorange2@juno.com (Rusty M Shelby) Subject: Re: tape tree Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1996 11:32:09 EST On Thu, 14 Nov 1996 10:53:23, a new angry-psycho writes: >I dont know how this shit works, but I would like to get a dub of the >tape...Tell me what Ive gotta do... ok, how this works: you saw this message on the list. you replied because you want a copy of the tape. i got your reply. before i posted to the list about sign ups for "leaves", i organized a set of "branches". the "branches" help me in distribution of the tapes. i have the master tape recorded from the original cd's. i make a copy of the master for my 6 branches. my 6 branches each have 8 leaves that they will copy a tape for. that way, i make 6 copies, not 40. when the sign up closes (when all spots are full), i will post to the list.. in this post will be the names and email addresses for my 6 branches and their 8 leaves. this way, you can see who your branch is. it is up to you to contact this branch if you still want a copy of the tape. you and your branch will make arrangements on how you go about getting the tape. you can either trade a copy of a show you have for it that the branch is interested in, or you can simply send your branch a blank tape and some way of getting it back to you (this could be either $ for return postage and packing, or you could send the tape along with another return bubble envelope in side the package you send with return postage already on the return envelope.) some tape trees work differently than others, but in this case, it is up to you to contact your branch. hope this helps. - --------- End forwarded message ---------- if you sent me a request, i got it unless you got you messge returned for what ever reason. please do not send another email to me asking "did you get my information?".... i will post the list later this week and you will see you name in print on the list for who your branch will be. - -rusty ------------------------------ From: Scott Rappaport Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1996 16:18:18 -0500 Subject: possible title Hey there fellow angry psychos. How's it going? I heard Poe was going to enter the recording studio on completion of her current tour. I know it's a little early, but I had an idea for the title of the new album. I think it should be called "Try". I think it's appropriate because if you put together Poe and try, you get Poetry. Just something I was thinking about. Well, it's not really a page. The only thing it has on it is the "How Long" wav. I downloaded the file a few times just to test it. It works perfectly when I downloaded from the ftp, and it worked when I downloaded the file from Netscape 2.01. But when I downloaded the file from Netscape 3.0, only part of the file downloaded. Maybe something is wrong with my Netscape. Anyway, you can download the "How Long" wav at http://hudson.idt.net/~proage19/ It's around 2500 Kb. Please tell me if it downloads ok. If you already have a copy of "How Long," you probably shoudln't download it, but there are probably a few of you that don't have it. Please remember to tell me if you like it or if it even works right. And I'll start working on the page as soon as I get a chance.
