Part 2/2 The band breaks for a meeting that POE called over in the corner. They rap for about 10 minutes and I hang out waiting for the opportunity to talk to POE for a bit. I had the internet on my mind. Knowing that I have made the committment to being a major POE resource on the internet I approach POE. Knowing I have the power and the desire to do this right I asked for her help. It turns out there is a whole other meeting going on. They are talking about the news letter that POE is putting out. It is coming. I saw the rough draft. I continue to push the internet. At this point the Eels are sound checking and we can't hear eachother so we go upstairs and talk. It is me, POE, a writer named Z, Paul Fishkin (POE's record label guy), Shawn (a record rep).... Thats it. We talked internet and it is looking good. Things like updates to shows and fan mails all coming to a hip off the wall... POE environment. I have told the miss POE that I want to provided her with a place for her to play. The corprate side will do there thing. But here she can be POE; for us. The talk goes well and the internet stuff will be mentioned. WE ARE THE BEGGINING; ANGRY-PSYCHOS. We all depart and that is the pre-show meet (I was very amazed to see how hard she works, tough business. POE is a fighter).... ****** I have an extra ticket that I sell for $10. I go in with a friend and get a beer. The Eels go on five minutes later. It was perfect timing. I was very impressed with the Eels tonight. It was a very good warm up for POE. The Eels rock and stop for a mellow tune. Then they had a long percussion jam going on. Great rythm. I would buy the CD after seeing them. Eels are over and I make a mad dash to the center of the floor so I can be there to catch POE's stage dive. The Roxy seats about 300. Cool place. Great sound to the room. The show was going to rock.... We stand around for about 25 minutes and all of the stage crew do there thing. Set up and break down things. One thing that caught my eye and what is so awesome about POE's band is when Cameron was done warming up his cello and fine tuning, a couple of people stuck out there album covers for an autograph. Cameron, with the grin of a rabbit, thanks and signs the stuff. Being so cool. That is what makes stars, stars... He is a great guy. POE arrives. Weraing all black as she did in PHX. Psycho T-Shirt... Painted Silver. Velvet skirt with an oriental insginia on it. No make up and beautiful. The crowd loves it as they open with That Day. Every time I hear it I want to be on stage doing a duet with her. Maybe someday. Funniest thing is seeing this girl form the audience body surfing to That Day. POE loved it then squirmished a little. They then go into Choking the Cherry. The crowd jumps around a little. Not very impressed with the CA crowd. In PHX all broke loose. I looked like a freak in comparison to 60% of these people. Like they need a license to have fun. Oh well. I knew what I was there to do and that was to support POE. Hello is next. Rocks. Then into Fly Away. Beautifuly sung. POE seems to have a very instinctual thing about her vibe tonight. As the crowd soothes into her voice and presence. Cameron jams a little bit. Slides into some AC/DC. Then after his solo they go into Dolphin. Crowd is in complete awe. There is something about this song that has everybody attached. It is very strong lyricly. A real crowd pleaser. Here and in PHX. Next is Beautifu Girl. "For all of the beautiful girls here tonight." As POE says. The when that is over it is the angry guy's turn to rock. Angry Johnny did rock. It jams out toward the end and POE and Jones (the drummer) always have a cymbal banging exchange. At the end POE throws out the drum stick that she was using and I jump high... GET IT. Stoked. They then play Trigger Happy Jack. Good... Ya just good. Then How Long. I like this song. New song that isn't that new. New to the audience that she performs to but a song tht is 10 months old. (I hate the fact that POE is not going to put out an album for atleast nine months). The finale is always a speed metal jam. they carry it out for about three minutes. Rocking Hard. It's over. No encore. POE's style..... The place empties quicky. Cameron is signing autographs at the front of the stage. POE not to be found. Cooling off, no doubt. Until tomorrow's show. Take Care Friends Jarrod (PHX) P.S. We need bootlegs of her shows. Tape Tree won't work from the corporate level. Just a hint cassette feinds. ------------------------------ From: "Anthony Amato" Date: Tue, 29 Oct 1996 16:53:33 -0500 Subject: Another POE experience 1/2 The following message is forward from a friend of Jarrod. Part 1/2 Greetings... I am at my friends computer in CA. This is Jarrod from PHX. jarrod@getnet.com ***** Today's reading will take 10 minutes. Please relax. ****** Another amazing POE experience. I have flown out to LA to see POE at The Roxy. Famous is the name; I know that POE has the stature to be in such a famous place. This trip has been planned for about two months. I have a couple of friends whou live in W. Hollowood and I stayed with them. Two miles from The Roxy. Perfect. I purchased the tickets the second I saw that they were com ing to LA. Charged a plane ticket. Knowing I had to have more than one POE show under my belt. I got in around 2p. Had a couple of beers with my friends and I went up to The Roxy for the sound check. I know the routine so I acted it out the best that I could. I had no problem getting in and as I arrived POE is telling her Road Manger to put me on the list... Speaking my name as I enter the room... She tripped out and told me so. "Did you hear that," she said. What? "I just said your name and there you were." (Now I would say I love her but it might prove to be embarrasing.) I am embarrased to say that in my hurry I forgot to get film. Forgot to bring my camer to the sound check and I have no pictures to report with. Bummed. BUMMED! It is weird how getting carried away with too many thought breeds ineffectiveness. I asked POE if they would be doing a sound check tomorrow because I wanted the pictures. She said no. bummer... She sound checks with... Hello... Angry Johnny... How Long... Cameron fires off some cello rifs. A very interesting intensity I saw in POE during the sound check. Stopping multiple times to get it right. Tweeking the sound. "Start from the second set..." A lot of different conversations going on. Sound Guys.. Record guys... Fans... A huge mix of people and POE concentrating on making sure the sound is to her satisfaction. She is the One. TIMES UP announces her manager. POE not satisfied because she wanted to practice one more song. Finally saying F-It. They clear the stage. Pride in her stride as she walks off the stage. To me, knowing that the world will be hers tonight. We, as the audience, are her toys for one hour in time. She plays us as her voice plays the melodies. We accept it. That is why we come. ------------------------------ From: Jarrod Date: Tue, 29 Oct 1996 15:53:52 -0700 (MST) Subject: POE @ The Roxy LA (Mon) Until death due us; our paths have crossed. Hey Hey... Not too inspired about this email.... Had to leave the serenity of POE today... Monday night at The Roxy really was great. She sounded so good. At times I felt she was singing right to us (angry-psychos). This was the one year anniversary since her album Hello was released. There were a lot of record types in the crowd. You could feel it. Photographers right in the front of the stage to get that perfect shot. She is a star. No doubt in my mind. I knew that the first day I met her. The presence of a person with a committment. SHE IS THE ONE (we know). Simple set list.... That Day Choking the Cherry Hello Fly Away Dolphin Beautiful Girl Angry Johnny Trigger Happy Jack How Long Speed Metal Jam There was a great vibe from POE tonight. She had the desire to win and you could feel it. I carried that same desire. I want to see her succeed so badly. Sometimes I have to remember that I can't be attached to the outcome. I CAN'T BE ATTACHED TO THE OUTCOME (I will stress out if I do). There was a real fun moment during Dolphin when a fan named Daniel Klein handed POE half a beer. She sings with it. Teases it. Seduces the crowd with it. Then in a fury of drum beats she pours it on top of her head. The crowd loves it. She had the perfect delivery of the gift from Daniel. I wish I had a picture of POE all wet haired and rocking. She was on top of her game. Home town. One year since the release of Hello. She was really entertaining the crowd tonight. As I have told POE, someday we will not be able to see her in front of 300 people. It will be thousands. The show comes to an end and POE does not depart. She sits at the front of the stage and signs autographs. 40 people stand around. I fight to the front to say good bye. Get her attention. Tell her to keep the faith. She laughs; a look of whatever Jarrod. I laugh at myself and figure if she doesn't have any faith in what she is doing she would not be here. I hang my head in shame. Walking away sad because I have to leave tomorrow to go back to PHX. Jarrod (PHX) I have been blessed to be a part of POE's life. The future has no barriers.
