Faced with an appeal to their holy book, Ali's forces stopped fighting, despite Ali's warnings that raising the Quran was for deception. Compelled by the strong peace sentiments in his army and threats of mutiny, Ali accepted the arbitration proposal. This verdict strengthened the Syrians' support for Mu'awiya and weakened the position of Ali.
