Whether that is updating your status on your Facebook Page, posting pictures of what youbve been up to on Instagram, pinning your product photos to Pinterest, or producing explainer videos on YouTube while of course tweeting your latest thoughts on Twitter. The trouble is there isnbt enough time to do them all. All of these channels on their own are great ways of promoting your business. However, more channels doesnbt mean more results. Spreading your efforts too thinly will dilute your results and have the opposite effect of growing your business. When youbre growing your business, you simply canbt afford the time to spend it on managing lots of social media channels. Instead focus on your efforts on one channel at a time. When you start seeing consistent results from that channel, only then should you consider branching out to second channel. Growth Tips #8 Test and Measure bWhat gets measured, getbs doneb goes the saying. But that doesnbt mean you measure things for the sake of it. Instead you measure the things so that you can learn whatbs successful and what isnbt, and how you can improve. Herebs 5 steps to creating measures that matter: 1. Set goals for what you want to achieve When creating measures, the first step is to list out exactly what you actually what you to achieve from your activities. What are you trying to accomplish? And then webd think about exactly what we want our potential customers / prospects to do, like, share, purchase, read, reply etc. So say Using the example above of social media - say our goals are that we want to: a) grow our brand awareness b) connect with more potential customers 2.Set Measures The next step is to match the goals with what you are trying to measure. For example say we are trying to promote our new product or service using Facebook, we might set up measures for: - - numbers of post likes we get - - numbers of new page likes we get - - number of shares - - numbers of sales - - demographics e.g. male/female, age, location So for growing our brand awareness we measure the number of post likes and page likes. For connecting with more potential customers you can set measures around the numbers of shares. 3. Measure Once youbve actually set your measures, you need to actually go about and track them - measures could be set up manually in a simple Excel/Google Sheets spreadsheet to track or a real time analytics tool like Google Analytics. But before doing anything, set a baseline for the items you are looking to track. For example how many Facebook likes do you have now? 4. Review The next steps is to review your results. A review should happen on a reasonably regular basis, but not too often. Really it depends on the type of business you are running. In some instances, a quarterly or monthly review may be sufficient, in others it may be weekly. The review should always be against the baseline measure that y ou set yourself. If you donbt know what your starting point is, itbs impossible to tell whether youbre doing better or worse than expected. But to start off, for the first month, itbs worth checking your results weekly in order that you get a bfeelb for how things are going - but resist the temptation to do anything about it, until the end of the month, so that you can tell the difference between annommoly and a trend. 5. Do The final step is to implement an action plan. It maybe that your results are performing as expected. But could they be improved? Do you need to do anything else as result of the measures? Once youbve created your action plan, you then need to understand what you are looking to achieve and how youbre your going to achieve it. Then add them to your action plan. Growth Tips #9 Email Marketing Itbs all very well building up your Facebook page likes, but as many business owners discovered in 2013 the rules can change overnight. When Facebook started showing only a small proportion of posts to users, meaning that if you wanted all your followers to see your post, then you needed to pay for it with a promoted post. Email marketing on the other hand is a cheap and cost effective marketing tool for small business owners. But donbt use your own business email account to send out emails as youbll soon get your email account blocked. And if you donbt have someonebs permission to send them an email, your emails will be treated as spam and could get your email marketing account blocked, or worse still fall foul of the law and prosecuted. Growth Tips #10 - Have a process for selling Whilst itbs true that sales is a skill, itbs a skill that can be leant. The best sales people have a process for selling. They are the best sales people because theybve repeated this sales processes 100bs of times. So how about this for a process. Identify 5 prospects for your business. Call them, email them or write a letter to them. The next day do the same again and the next. At the end of a month, youblll have contacted at least a 100 potential prospects for your business. Thatbs a 100 more people who knew about your product or service than there was at the begining of the month. Have a process, follow up, rinse and repeat.
