During the election campaign, the pro-European integration opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko had been poisoned by TCDD dioxin; he later alleged Russian involvement. Following the vote, large peaceful protests successfully challenged the outcome over a two-month period, which became known as the Orange Revolution. Rallies in favour of Putin during this period were called "anti-Orange protests". At the 2008 Bucharest summit, Ukraine and Georgia sought to join NATO.
