Unlike Cook's report, it does not focus on the nautical aspects of the voyage, but on the scientific and ethnological observations. Forster describes encounters with the peoples and cultures of the South Seas and the corrupting impact of the contact with European sailors. Peoples described include the Tahitians, the Maori of New Zealand, and the Fuegians of Tierra del Fuego, whose technologies and societies Forster analysed and compared. The following is a summary of the contents of each chapter, following the journey of the Resolution under Cook, which was accompanied for parts of the journey by the Adventure under the command of Tobias Furneaux. Preface The greatest navigator of his time, two able astronomers, a man of science to study nature in all her recesses, and a painter to copy some of her most curious productions, were selected at the expence of the nation. After completing their voyage, they have prepared to give an account of their respective discoveries, which cannot fail of crowning, their employers at least, with immortal honour. Forster explains the history of the work, including the agreements between his father, Cook and Sandwich. He proceeds with an apology for producing a work separate to Cook's, and gives an account of the life in England of Tahitian native Omai, who had arrived in Europe on Adventure in 1774. Book I A painting A View of the Cape of Good Hope, Taken on the Spot, from on Board the Resolution, by William Hodges A View of the Cape of Good Hope, Taken on the Spot, from on Board the Resolution, painting by William Hodges, 1772 Chapter I. DeparturebPassage from Plymouth to MadeirabDescription of that Island. The Forsters travel from London to Plymouth. After final works on the Resolution have been completed, the sea voyage begins. They sail along the coast of Spain, then spend some days in Madeira. Forster describes the island on several pages. Chapter II. The Passage from Madeira to the Cape Verd Islands, and from thence to the Cape of Good Hope. The voyage passes the Canary Islands, then crosses the Tropic of Cancer. They visit Cape Verde. Forster comments on its inhabitants and their wretchedness, which he blames on "despotic governors, bigotted priests, and indolence on the part of the court of Lisbon". On the way south, they encounter dolphins, flying fish, and some luminous sea creatures. Chapter III. Stay at the Cape of Good Hope.bAccount of that Settlement. The voyagers spend three weeks in Cape Town. Forster describes the colony, which he finds far superior to the Portuguese colony at Cape Verde. They meet Anders Sparrman, a Swedish naturalist, who agrees to accompany them. Chapter IV. Run from the Cape to the Antarctic Circle; first season spent in high Southern Latitudes.bArrival on the Coast of New Zeeland. Refer to caption Ice islands with ice blink, gouache by Georg Forster, 1773 The voyagers sail south, into unknown waters. As the weather gets colder, Cook provides the seamen with warm clothing. At 51B0 5' South, they encounter icebergs. William Wales and Forster's father get lost in the fog in a small boat, but eventually manage to return to the ship. The sailors are drunk at Christmas. Ice is brought on board to be melted. On 17 January 1773, they cross the Antarctic Circle: On the 17th, in the forenoon, we crossed the antarctic circle, and advanced into the southern frigid zone, which had hitherto remained impenetrable to all navigators. ... About five o'clock in the afternoon, we had sight of more than thirty large islands of ice a-head; and perceived a strong white reflexion from the sky over the horizon. Soon after we passed through vast quantities of broken ice, which looked honey-combed and spungy, and of a dirty colour. This continually thickened about us, so that the sea became very smooth, though the wind was fresh as before. An immense field of solid ice extended beyond it to the south, as far as the eye could reach from the mast-head. Seeing it was impossible to advance farther that way, Captain Cook ordered the ships to put about, and stood north-east by north, after having reached 67B0 15' south latitude, where many whales, snowy, grey, and antarctic petrels, appeared in every quarter. The voyage continues eastwards, with occasional attempts to go further south. They lose contact with the Adventure. Several sailors suffer from symptoms of scurvy. They arrive in New Zealand at the end of February, "after a space of four months and two days, out of sight of land". Chapter V. Stay at Dusky Bay; description of it, and account of our transactions there. Refer to caption Dusky Bay in New Zealand, painting by William Hodges, April 1773 Resolution arrives at Dusky Bay, where they meet some natives and make several excursions. There are plenty of fish and many ducks to shoot. They leave some geese to breed and restock with water and timber. They stay for some days at Long Island. After six weeks in the area, Forster concl ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2021 07:21:12 -0500 From: "Gregory Peters" Subject: Scientists: Tinnitus Has Nothing To Do With Your Ears..... In his 1783 description of the Tongan bird (wherein it was named Rallus eucaudata), the English ornithologist John Frederick Miller erroneously gave its locality as Tahiti, which led the Tahiti rail to be regarded as a junior synonym of the extant bird. He based his description on Forster's illustration (plate no. 127) of the Tongan bird, and Latham and Gmelin later repeated Miller's erroneous locality. The 1844 publication of Forster's description listed the Tongan bird as a variety of the Tahitian species, and similar schemes were suggested by later writers until 1953, when the New Zealand biologist Averil Margaret Lysaght pointed out Miller's locality mistake, which had been overlooked until that point, and kept the two birds separate. In spite of the clarification, the Tongan bird was placed on a list of extinct birds in the 1981 book Endangered Birds of the World, and Forster's plate of the Tahiti rail was used to illustrate the Samoan wood rail (Gallinula pacifica), a completely different species, in the 1989 book Le Grand Livre des EspC)cies Disparues. Along with the buff-banded rail and close relatives, the Tahiti rail has historically been placed in either the genus Hypotaenidia (as H. pacifica) or Gallirallus (as G. pacificus), and is currently classified in the former. The specific name refers to the Pacific Ocean and is Latin for "peaceful". In 1977 the American ornithologist Sidney Dillon Ripley suggested that the Tahiti rail was an isolated form of buff-banded rail and perhaps belonged to a superspecies with that bird and the Wake Island rail (Hypotaenidia wakensis). Rails are some of the most widespread terrestrial vertebrates, and have colonised practically all island groups, with many island species being flightless. In 1973 the American ornithologist Storrs L. Olson argued that many insular flightless species of rails were descended from still extant flighted rails, that flightlessness had evolved independently and rapidly in many different island species, and that this feature is therefore of no taxonomic importance. Flightlessness can be advantageous (especially where food is scarce) because it conserves energy by decreasing the mass of flight muscles; the absence of predators (particularly mammalian) and a reduced need for dispersal are factors that allow this feature to develop in island bir ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2021 06:17:50 -0500 From: "Nutrient For Stress" Subject: Instant stress relief nutrient (80% of people lack it) Instant stress relief nutrient (80% of people lack it) http://casinodestroer.co/fxAqKGcsmHhbF6Gf0xqPAiOuQi9bDE-fjViRJjjca4tloGSuGw http://casinodestroer.co/bfkhvCiVdAcPtGqn_T31t2vfU-k2Ruup2LHeUoIUERXsE1zzlA ound by his father's agreements with the Admiralty, Georg Forster began to write A Voyage Round the World in July 1776, which fully engaged him for nine months. His father's journals were the main source for the work. The facts about what they saw and did are typically taken from these journals but recast into Georg's own style, with a different ordering of the details and additional connecting material. Some parts were based on segments of Cook's journals that Forster's father had accessed while preparing his samples for Sandwich. Georg used his own notes and recollections, including his own memorandum Observationes historiam naturalem spectantes quas in navigationes ad terras australes institutere coepit G. F. mense Julio, anno MDCCLXXII, which contains botanical and biological observations up to 1 January 1773.[nb 3] Unlike the systematic approach of Johann Reinhold Forster's later book Observations Made during a Voyage round the World (1778), A Voyage Round the World is a chronology of the voyage, but written as entertaining literature, including the use of quotations from classical literature to frame the narrative, instead of a dry collection of facts. Among the first books using such scientific-literary techniques, it is regarded as a seminal book in the history of travel writing and has been described as "unambiguously the finest of the Cook voyage narratives". The Oxford astronomer Thomas Hornsby proofread the book's manuscript. Georg Forster drew a chart for the book, which was engraved by William Whitchurch. It shows most of the Southern Hemisphere in stereographic projection from the intersection of the Arctic Circle and the meridian of Greenwich. The chart shows the tracks of the expedition's ships more clearly than the one printed in Cook's account, which included those of other navigators. Reinhold Forster attempted to access the plates with the engravings that were made for Cook's account, but was refused by the publishers. Nevertheless, Georg had seen proofs of these plates, frequently mentioned and commented on in Voyage. The book appeared on 17 March 1777, printed in two volumes totalling 1200 pages by the publisher Benjamin White. Cook's official account of the voyage, A Voyage Towards the South Pole and Round the World, appeared six weeks later. Cook's book included 63 copper engravings, some of which were based on Georg Forster's drawings, while A Voyage Round the World was not illustrated except for the chart. Nevertheless, both books were sold at the same price of 2 guineas. Forster's book sold slowly; in 1778, 570 of about 1000 copies were still unsold, and the Forsters had to sell most of their collection of Pacific artefacts and Georg's drawings to alleviate their debts. Some of the drawings were not published until 2007, when they appeared in an illustrated Germ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2021 04:30:45 -0500 From: "Canvas Prints" Subject: Limited Time Fall Kickoff Sale! He has formed a sleeper cell network consisting of 40 terrorists who pose as Indians to set more bombings after the 26/11 Attacks, one of whom is his son Riyaz Hafeez. In Jaisalmer, Surya and his team nab Riyaz who had a different identity there. Surya's senior Kabir Shroff reveals about a full ton of RDX being brought to India, of which 400 kilograms were used during those bombings and the remnant 600 kilograms are still buried somewhere in India. Surya plans to catch the sleeper cell's remaining members, even as he remembers his wife Ria Gupta. 9 years ago, Surya was wounded by a bullet and Ria cured him. They fell in love, married, and became parents to a son Aryan. 8 years later, Surya tried to nab a man where Ria and Aryan were present, which culminated in Aryan being shot. Although he came out healthy, an angry Ria slapped Surya and told him that he can't sacrifice his family just to fulfill his duty, and she left him, taking Aryan with her to Australia. Back to the present, Surya comes across an Islamic priest Kadar Usmani, later revealed to be a terrorist, and finds Bilal Ahmed, whose residence houses the wanted 600 kilograms of RDX. Usmani and Bilal remove RDX from the ground and prepare for their next bombings until when Bilal leaves for Mumbai, where taxi driver John Mascarenhas takes him to Bangkok in exchange of ?5 crore. Surya catches Bilal who shoots himself to death, and later after asking John in Bangkok post a long chase, he learns the bombs were being made by Mukhtar Ansari, another member of the sleeper cell. Usmani and John are arrested; Surya plans to pretend to torture Usmani's daughters to make him confess. Usmani finally informs Rafique will meet him. Later, it turns out that a bomb was planted which kills Rafique, Usmani, and one of the cops accompanying him. His daughter helps Surya to identify Ansari, who is hiding in Shivgarh. Surya asks Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao, now an Inspector in charge of Shivgadh, to catch Ansari. Simmba finds out 7 bombs are to be planted at 7 locations in Mumbai. Riyaz escapes, and it's revealed that the Anti-Terrorism Squad's headquarters would also be bombed. Surya and his team enlist National Security Guard's help to safely extradite the bombs via helicopters and the bombings fail. However, Riyaaz and his team use Ria as a suicide bomber to attack the ATS Headquarters keeping Surya, Simmba, and other cops as hostages. Surya's friend DCP Bajirao Singham enters, and they defuse the bomb wrapped around Ria while finishing the terrorist attackers. Singham warns Omar that he will chase him soon. Mukhtar and Riyaz subsequently fight with them. Singham captures both and they taunt they've been in India as sleeper cells for many years, carrying several attacks in Mumbai and the cops cannot harm them. Singham, Simmba, and Surya in anger shoot them to death. He goes on stage and exposes the judge who had emphasised on honesty and values in his speech, not knowing that he is the principal's husband. The following morning, he meets the principal at her home and asks for forgiveness, only for her to tear Tarika's scholarship letter to pieces and throw it on his face. He vows to send Tarika to London, come what may. With the help of a London-based acquaintance, Bablu, Champak and Tarika along with Gopi proceed to London so that Tarika can find accommodation there till college opens. However, Champak and Gopi are caught and interrogated by the airport police. When they inadvertently say that they have 'drugs', they are deported and their passports blacklisted. Tarika, who had been calling Champak, Gopi and Bablu to no avail, goes to a rented home, and starts enjoying the free-spirited London life while also trying to fund her education. Meanwhile, Champak and Gopi are referred to a fixer in Dubai, Tony, who gives them Pakistani aliases and forged passports. They return to London, under the names of Abdul Razzaq and Saqlain Mushtaq, and are briefly accosted by Naina, a cop. They find lodging in a house owned by Mrs. Kohli, who is Naina's estranged mother. When they meet Tarika, Champak is aghast at her lifestyle, and demands that she leave her lodgings or he will sever ties with her. Gopi asks him why he says so, to which he replies that this is in order to avoid getting caught by Naina. The two visit a police station, where Bablu is lodged; they pay for his bail, and he tells them that he is now penniless. One night, Mrs. Kohli has invited the Bansals for dinner on the eve of her birthday, when Naina suddenly barges in and says that since her mother has not cared for her, she can do whatever she wants. The next day, Champak and Gopi find the senior Kohli unconscious on the floor, and rush her to the hospital, narrowly saving her life. When Naina arrives on the scene, she breaks down and realises the value of caring for her. Champak, Gopi and Bablu hear of a fundraiser organised by Truford University and reluctantly agree to bid for its renovation, which costs 300,000 pounds. At their wits' end for arranging for such a large sum, they agree to sell the Ghasiteram family name. When Champak tells Tarika the news, she is nonplussed. The next day, as the three go to a scrapyard to collect the money, Champak pours his entire story to Tarika, who is convinced that she should not have put him and Gopi through so much trouble to fulfil her dream. Tarika later decides to give up her London scholarship and study back home in Udaipur, to which everyone agrees.
