Unlike other animals, they lack true tissues and organs. Some of them are radially symmetrical, but most are asymmetrical. The shapes of their bodies are adapted for maximal efficiency of water flow through the central cavity, where the water deposits nutrients and then leaves through a hole called the osculum. The single-celled choanoflagellates resemble the choanocyte cells of sponges which are used to drive their water flow systems and capture most of their food. This along with phylogenetic studies of ribosomal molecules have been used as morphological evidence to suggest sponges are the sister group to the rest of animals. A great majority are marine (salt-water) species, ranging in habitat from tidal zones to depths exceeding 8,800 m (5.5 mi), though there are freshwater species. All adult sponges are sessile, meaning that they attach to an underwater surface and remain fixed in place (i.e., do not travel). While in their larval stage of life, they are motile. Many sponges have internal skeletons of spicules (skeletal-like fragments of calcium carbonate or silicon dioxide), and/or spongin (a modified type of collagen protein). An internal gelatinous matrix called mesohyl functions as an endoskeleton, and it is the only skeleton in soft sponges that encrust such hard surfaces as rocks. More commonly, the mesohyl is stiffened by mineral spicules, by spongin fibers, or both. 90% of all known sponge species that have the widest range of habitats including all freshwater ones are demosponges that use spongin; many species have silica spicules, whereas some species have calcium carbonate exoskeletons. Calcareous sponges have calcium carbonate spicules and, in some species, calcium carbonate exoskele ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2024 02:36:47 -0500 From: "myGov" Subject: New myGov inbox message Hello, You have a new task in your Medicare online account. Other species focus on sessile benthic invertebrates; sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, and hydroids are staples. On Caribbean coral reefs, angelfishes primarily eat sponges, and have an important role in preventing the overgrowth of reef-building corals by eating faster-growing sponge species. Most marine angelfishes restrict themselves to the shallows of the reef, seldom venturing deeper than 50 m (160 ft). The recently described Centropyge abei is known to inhabit depths of 150 m (490 ft). They are diurnal animals, hiding amongst the nooks and crevices of the reef by night. Some species are solitary in nature and form highly territorial mated pairs; others form harems with a single male dominant over several females. As juveniles, some species may eke out a living as cleaner fish. Reproduction Common to many species is a dramatic shift in coloration associated with maturity. For example, young male ornate angelfish, Genicanthus bellus, have broad, black bands and are indistinguishable from females; as they mature, bright orange bands develop on the flanks and back. Thought to correspond to social rank, these colour shifts are not necessarily confined to males; all marine angelfish species are known to be protogynous hermaphrodites. Winged adults lay eggs on the food plant on which their larvae, known as caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, sometimes very rapidly, and when fully developed, pupate in a chrysalis. Some butterflies, especially in the tropics, have several generations in a year, while others have a single generation, and a few in cold locations may take several years to pass through their entire life cycle. Butterflies are often polymorphic, and many species make use of camouflage, mimicry, and aposematism to evade their predators. Some, like the monarch and the painted lady, migrate over long distances. Many butterflies are attacked by parasites or parasitoids, including wasps, protozoans, flies, and other invertebrates, or are preyed upon by other organisms. Some species are pests because in their larval stages they can damage domestic crops or trees; other species are agents of pollination of some plants. Public opinion in Sierra Leone was against the bill. Some groups called for the withdrawal of the bill due to Christian and Islamic beliefs that condemn abortion. Opponents included the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) and the country's Pentecostal church. The IRCSL was influenced by the Catholic Church, which argued that abortion violated a clause in the Constitution that said, "No person shall be deprived of his life intentionally". The president of the IRCSL, Sheikh Abu Bakarr Conteh, said that the law should consider the rights of the sexual partner and the family of the woman getting an abortion. In January 2016, religious groups led a protest in which hundreds of people marched to the House of Parliament. Catholic leaders voiced opposition to the law more frequently than Muslim leaders. Proponents of the bill said that unsafe abortions were a large contributor to maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, which was the highest in the world, and that the law would support victims of rape and sexual violence. Groups such as AdvocAid said that the anti-abortion law was largely unenforced yet led to unsafe abortions being common. In January 2016, alongside the anti-abortion protest, dozens of people, mostly middle-class women, attended a demonstration in support of the proposal. The following week, three letters urged Koroma to approve the bill. One by the International Campaign for Womenbs Right to Safe Abortion received over 200 signatures. Another letter was sent on 4 February by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Sierra Leonean organizations 50/50, AdvocAid, Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law, Ipas Sierra Leone, and Wi Di Uman Dem Coalition. Human rights leaders who called for Koroma to sign the bill included the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights's special rapporteur on women's rights, Lucy Asuagbor, and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Dubravka E imonovi?. The trees were old Fuerte avocados with 2 or 3 Lyon as well as a few Pueblas and Nabals. The Fuerte was the best avocado available at that time, but Hass could not afford to buy more trees, so he decided to cut down many of the old trees and have them grafted over to Fuerte with new bud wood. Hass hired a professional grafter named Mr. Caulkins, who advised Mr. Hass to buy avocado seeds from a nursery owned by Mr. Rideout and grow his own seedlings and then have them grafted to the Fuerte variety. Hass agreed and followed his advice. He planted the rest of the grove on 12-foot (3.7 m) centers with three seeds in each hole. Cuttings from existing Fuerte trees were grafted onto the strongest of the three newly planted trees from each hole. All but three of the grafts 'took' and new Fuerte trees grew out of the new seedlings. Mr. Caulkins re-grafted those three trees. Then he re-grafted the one tree that had rejected the second graft. Again it did not take. Hass was ready to give up and asked Mr. Caulkins to chop it down, but Mr. Caulkins told him it was a good strong tree and advised Hass to "just leave it alone and see what happens." So Hass did. Mr. Hass was not a botanist like Luther Burbank (1849 - 1926) who purposely cross pollinated plants to produce over 800 better varieties. All known living sponges can remold their bodies, as most types of their cells can move within their bodies and a few can change from one type to another. Even if a few sponges are able to produce mucus b which acts as a microbial barrier in all other animals b no sponge with the ability to secrete a functional mucus layer has been recorded. Without such a mucus layer their living tissue is covered by a layer of microbial symbionts, which can contribute up to 40b50% of the sponge wet mass. This inability to prevent microbes from penetrating their porous tissue could be a major reason why they have never evolved a more complex anatomy. Like cnidarians (jellyfish, etc.) and ctenophores (comb jellies), and unlike all other known metazoans, sponges' bodies consist of a non-living jelly-like mass (mesohyl) sandwiched between two main layers of cells. Cnidarians and ctenophores have simple nervous systems, and their cell layers are bound by internal connections and by being mounted on a basement membrane (thin fibrous mat, also known as "basal lamina"). Sponges do not have a nervous system similar to that of vertebrates but may have one that is quite different. President Ernest Bai Koroma refused to sign the bill and sent it back to parliament on 6 January 2016. The speaker of the house refused to give the bill his assent. Parliament returned the unchanged bill to the president on 11 February. Koroma blocked the bill again and referred it to the Constitutional Review Committee so it could put changes to the Constitution to a referendum. The law would have allowed abortion during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy on request or twenty-four weeks in cases of pregnancy from rape or incest or risk to health of the mother or fetus. It said minors could have abortions with parental consent. It mandated a four-year jail sentence for conducting unlicensed abortions. Koroma and his wife, Sia Koroma, initially supported the bill's introduction, and the public expected it to pass. Meetings with religious groups influenced his opposition to the law. Koroma asked for Parliament to review the law since the Maputo Protocol only provided for abortion in the cases of rape and medical emergencies. In an address on International Women's Day, he argued that the law violated the right to life and that it did not clearly define its scope. Opposition politicians claimed that Koroma was building up support ahead of the upcoming election and that he planned to negate the term limit to run for another term. Competency is a series of knowledge, abilities, skills, experiences and behaviors, which leads to effective performance in an individual's activities. Competency is measurable and can be developed through training. Some scholars see "competence" as a combination of practical & theoretical knowledge, cognitive skills, behavior, and values used to improve performance; or as the state or quality of being adequately or well qualified, having the ability to perform a specific role. For instance, management competency might include system thinking and emotional intelligence, as well as skills in influence and negotiation. Etymology The term "competence" first appeared in an article authored by R.W. White in 1959 as a concept for performance motivation. In 1970, Craig C. Lundberg defined this concept as "Planning the Executive Development Program". The term gained traction in 1973 when David McClelland wrote a seminal paper entitled, "Testing for Competence Rather Than for Intelligence". The term, created by McClelland, was commissioned by the State Department to explain characteristics common to high-performing agents of embassy, as well as help them in recruitment and development. It has since been popularized by Richard Boyatzis, and many others including T.F. Gilbert (1978), who used the concept in performance improvement. Its abortion law does not specify any grounds for legal abortion, but abortion might be permitted to save the life of the mother.[note 1] Abortion has been illegal since 1861. In the 2010s and 2020s, activists, politicians, and international organizations have opposed the ban on abortion. Religious groups and the general public have supported the ban. In 2015, Parliament approved a controversial bill to allow abortion, introduced by Isata Kabia, but President Ernest Bai Koroma refused to sign it. In 2022, the government of Julius Maada Bio unanimously backed a new bill to lift the ban on abortion. Unsafe abortions are a major factor in Sierra Leone's maternal mortality rate, one of the highest in the world. The country has a stigma surrounding abortion, and many girls have little knowledge of it. Legislation The law banning abortion in Sierra Leone has not been modified since its introduction during the British colonial era. The Offences Against the Person Act 1861, an act of the British Parliament grouped with the Criminal Law Consolidation Acts 1861, criminalizes acts performed to terminate a pregnancy. Sierra Leone is the only former British colony where the act is still in effect. The law does not specify any grounds for legal abortion. A British judicial decision permitting abortions to save the life of the mother has not been brought up in Sierra Leone's courts, so it is unclear whether such abortions are permitted.[note 1] Proposed legislation Activists and organizations such as Marie Stopes International have advocated for abortion reform since 2010. Bio announced his plan on 1 July 2022, at the 10th Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights in Freetown, to the approval of the audience and the conference's organizers. He said at the conference, "At a time when sexual and reproductive health rights for women are either being overturned or threatened, we are proud that Sierra Leone can once again lead with progressive reforms. My government has unanimously approved a safe motherhood bill that will include a range of critical provisions to ensure the health and dignity of all girls and women of reproductive age in this country." The speech referred to the Supreme Court of the United States's recent decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. The provisions of the bill were drafted by a group of government officials and women's rights groups, who hoped for the law to be passed by the end of 2022. The bill covered other aspects of reproductive health including maternal health, access to contraceptives, and post-abortion care. Observers said that the bill would be difficult to pass ahead of the 2023 Sierra Leonean general election as members of Parliament would avoid the risk of losing support over it. Campaigners for the bill said unsafe abortions were the cause of 10% of the country's maternal deaths. Behavior The larger species are also quite bold and seem ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2024 14:35:16 +0200 From: "Sleep Support" Subject: Get the Rest You Deserve â Sleep Tips Inside Get the Rest You Deserve b Sleep Tips Inside http://generatorpower.ru.com/Dshq2Y531dtPGG0vpKkSmsBtIkzte69p6mPiSFU1wmmVYGO3yw http://generatorpower.ru.com/FmxCXf9s0gMq3P74-aP46u0WFFHMIkZgEKK8zWctEH66-oLrVg nd grandson Tokugawa Iemitsu (1623b51), bound all daimy?s to the shogunate and limited any individual daimy? from acquiring too much land or power. The Tokugawa shogunate came to its official end on 9 November 1867, when Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th Tokugawa sh?gun, "put his prerogatives at the Emperor's disposal" and resigned 10 days later. This was effectively the "restoration" (Taisei H?kan) of imperial rule b although Yoshinobu still had significant influence and it was not until January 3, the following year, with the young Emperor's edict, that the restoration fully occurred. On 3 January 1868, the Emperor stripped Yoshinobu of all power and made a formal declaration of the restoration of his power: The Emperor of Japan announces to the sovereigns of all foreign countries and to their subjects that permission has been granted to the Sh?gun Tokugawa Yoshinobu to return the governing power in accordance with his own request. We shall henceforward exercise supreme authority in all the internal and external affairs of the country. Consequently, the title of Emperor must be substituted for that of Taikun, in which the treaties have been made. Officers are being appointed by us to the conduct of foreign affairs. It is desirable that the representatives of the treaty powers recognize this announcement. b?Mutsuhito, January 3, 1868 Shortly thereafter in January 1868, the Boshin War started with the Battle of TobabFushimi in which Ch?sh? and Satsuma's forces defeated the ex-sh?gun's army. All Tokugawa lands were seized and placed under "imperial control", thus placing them under the prerogative of the new Meiji government. With Fuhanken sanchisei, the areas were split into three types: urban prefectures (?, fu), rural prefectures (?, ken) and the already existing domains. Calcareous sponges have calcium carbonate spicules and, in some species, calcium carbonate exoskele ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V14 #14445 ***********************************************
