The Leliaards hosted extravagant fC*tes for the pair, and to defray the costs, they raised taxes on the merchant class. This was met by outrage, as the supporters of Guy, known as Clauwerts, were indignant at having to pay for the celebrations of the victors. Jacques de ChC"tillon brought an army of 2,000 knights to maintain order in Bruges. Rumours quickly spread that the leaders of the Clauwerts as well as their families would all be executed. On the evening of 17 May 1302, ChC"tillon held a feast for his troops. Taking advantage of the fact that the knights would be tired after partying all night, at dawn the next morning, armed insurrectionists led by Pieter de Coninck and Jan Breydel entered the houses where the French were garrisoned and massacred them in their sleep using their "goedendag", a sharp pike they stuck into the victims' throats. According to tradition, to distinguish the French from the natives, they asked suspects to repeat the shibboleth: "schild en vriend", which means "shield and friend", a phrase difficult to pronounce for a French speaker. Another version suggests the alternative "des gilden vriend", "friend of the guilds".[citation needed] Only ChC"tillon, who escaped disguised as a priest after he failed to rally the garrison, and a handful of the French managed to escape with their lives. Approximately 2,000 people are estimated to have died. After the Bruges Matins, Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck were celebrated as the leaders of the insurrection. Their statue, which was an initiative of Julius Sabbe, has decorated the market in Bruges since 1887. He collaborated with Sacha Guitry on the musical comedies L'Amour masquC) (1923) and Deburau (1926), starring Yvonne Printemps. The former was a considerable success in Paris, but in London the official censor, the Lord Chamberlain, declared it "unfit for the English public", and banned C. B. Cochran's planned production starring Printemps and Guitry. In Messager's late stage works his lighter touch was balanced by echoes of the nineteenth century, with hints of FaurC) and, particularly, Chabrier's L'C toile. FaurC), by 1923 too frail and deaf to go to the theatre, was lent a copy of the score of L'Amour masquC) and wrote to Messager, "Your wit is the same as always b it never grows old b and so are your charm and very personal brand of music that always remains exquisite even amid the broadest clowning". FaurC) died the following year, and Messager dedicated the music of Deburau to his memory. In 1924 Sergei Diaghilev persuaded Messager to conduct the Paris premieres of Auric's ballet Les FC"cheux and Poulenc's Les Biches. In 1928 Messager played a key role in establishing important updates to copyright law, though he was on the losing side of the case. He sued the BBC for breach of copyright for broadcasting his works without his consent. He lost because he had assigned his British performing rights to George Edwardes, whose estate had given the BBC permission for the broadcast. The case established that as the broadcasting rights had not b ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V14 #13926 ***********************************************
