If Fruvous is still on hiatus, why do we have to have FruCon5 in February? My understanding is that FruCon1 was initially organized for February because the lads generally didn't tour much in February. Why not March, April or May? It would be a much safer drive for all or us when snow and ice on the roads aren't an issue. In addition, students may find it easier to travel for a long weekend when university/college is not in session. - -- Lori also adding her $.02. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 14:11:19 -0400 From: Marie-Claude Danis Subject: Re: Frucon 5? February is ideal because it's the beginning of reading week for most students, and most people also have Monday off. Summer months aren't ideal because most students might be working then. Reading week? What the hell is that? ;-) (actually, I know what it is, I'm just being a pain) MC, the reason you cite doesn't make much sense, since a great many people that would be going to FruCon are not students and also don't live in Canada. Also, I don't think I understand the Monday off reference. I know I don't get Mondays off. Therefore, I definitely think summer months make more sense. The main reason FruCon 1 was planned for February was so it could coincide with the Fruvous & Friends For Choice show. If that's not happening, then I definitely think picking a nicer time of year (climate-wise) is a good idea. Canada has nothing to do with it, as far as I know. The weekend of Frucon has always fallen somewhere around Spring Break (before or after) for a lot of students, in any country you wish. At least, that's what the Muricans told me. Also, I don't think I understand the Monday off > reference. I know I don't get Mondays off. Not all Mondays, dude. The Monday after Frucon falls on what you people call President's Day. Some of you (not all of you, I know) get that day off. It's also easier to book a venue in the winter months, and hotel rates are considerably cheaper in the off-season. Airfares too. I suddenly really want people to discuss this. Anybody? Apologies for my forgetting Pres Day...my mind is jelly right now. Both this and the other reasons Kath mentions do make quite a lot of sense, now that I think about it. And it's becoming tradition. Sure, it's only been 4 con's so far, but, still, that's 4 years. I know that I've already requested that time to be available. And there's others that I've talked with that try to keep that time free. > >I suddenly really want people to discuss this. Anybody? Ok, well, here's some more discussion points. Most people are going to be sitting around in hotel rooms/ convention halls/ restaurants anyways. Weather has nothing to do with that part of it. Plus, I don't know, changing the date, it might be able to bring more people out, but, it could also confuse some people as to when it'll be and just make them not bother. I dunno, sure, it's cold, but, then you get all the fun of warming up ;) Just my two bits, Oh, yeah, if you couldn't tell, I'd like it to stay that weekend. During the Fruvous Bonus Miles weekend (august), the weather was great.. Standing outside for a couple hours was rather enjoyable. Here's my vote for a non-winter frucon.
