The car had barely left the hotel before I began to miss you. This has been the best weekend of my life. Never before have I met such a group of people so friendly and easy to relate to. The ability to finally put faces and voices on these Wall and IRC names was a great feeling, and finally meeting (and for most, hugging profusely) you and spending this weekend with you was an absolutely exhilarating. It was a very powerful experience, and I wish I could have hugged you all about 7 dozen more times (and some of you, about 15 dozen more besides:)). I just couldn't resist commenting on this, in my incoherent way. I'm not an expert on these issues by any stretch of the imagination, and your mileage may vary. > I don't want to stir too much controversy, but I was just curious as to what > people think about Jian's comdemnation of the bombing of Iraq. It was my impression that Jian was more condemning Western media coverage of the bombing and Western (especially North American) attitudes towards Iraqis, although I don't suspect he approves of the bombing much either. > How can he > possibly condemn the United States' attempt to maintain security? Whose security? The world's? Or the United States'? Security from war, or financial security? There are many other places in the world where weapons are hoarded (if indeed that is the real concern) and people are repressed, but the United States does not interfere there. When Iran was at war about a decade ago, repressing its minorities and so on, the United States did not interfere. But when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the interests of the Western industrialized world were threatened--control of oil, specifically--so there was a reaction. > Sure, it is > a shame that an innocent civilian might be incidentally killed -- but think > how many innocent civilians Saddam Hussein is terrorizing! Yes, it is a terrible shame that Iraqis are having a tough time of it. But some of their problems stem from the U.S. embargo. Regardless, Jian was taking issue with the fact that those civilians were not being considered, and that the papers did not report casualties of the bombing. (It turned out there were very few, but that was beside his point.) > there is no reasoning with the madman > Saddam Hussein. I note that you use the word "madman". Saddam Hussein may very well be irrational, but it has gotten to the point where we in the Western world take our regard of Hussein (as evil incarnate, that is) and apply some of those negative feelings towards people in the Arab world in general. I think that Jian was, albeit in a slightly obtuse way, objecting to our demonizing of people in that part of the world, reflected in the way the papers did not report casualties. We demonize them so that the "fight for ideals" overshadows the human cost. It is my opinion that this is what The Gulf War Song is about. "Us would fight Them for We"--our way of life (our identity?), against theirs. > I think it's a good chance > for us to have a down-to-earth, polite, intellectual conversation. Bravo! (If you can call dropping bombs on them helping.) Of course they fear for their children's lives, but they do not seem to believe that they have anything to fear from Saddam. Right or wrong, that is what they choose to believe. I mean, I can't speak for them, but I'm pretty sure that they don't think very highly of our bombings. I don't remember Jian doing any muttering or rambling. I think it is pretty clear that he doesn't appreciate the dropping of bombs on the middle east. Yes, he expressed having an issue with the media coverage, but I think it is also pretty obvious that he has a problem with the US middle east policy. It appears that a large contingent of religious fanatics had decided to radicially change religions inciting a riot of sorts. The details about said riot were that it was kind of violent and involved some property damage. As a result, "wild" Bill (BDfL) addressed the press corp to announce how his administration was going to deal with this. "It is a sad day and I have had to make some decisions with a heavy heart. It is unfotunate that the four religions of the land cannot seem to coexist in peaceful harmony and it is inexcusable to allow members of one to disrupt the of the others. Therefor, as your supreme ruler, I have condemned each each person involved in the uprising to death. Anarchy and choas cannot and will not be tolerated". After giving this brief statement, the BDfL took the press corp on a tour of the execution grounds and gave a brief walk through of the execution ritual chosen for the members involved, whom our BDfL referred to sneeringly as "ungodly flithy communists". First each member was dipped in tar and then feathered. After said process was done, they were whipped repeatedly with a wet tuna fish, steaked through the heart, dismembered, beheaded, drawn and quartered, chopped into little bits and fed to lions. This process took an exceedingly long time because the tar laden anarchists made them lick the roofs of their mouths like a dog who has just injested some peanut butter. After watching the gruesome executions, the lions were then burned. When asked why the lions had to be burned, the BDfL responded gleefully "because it was completely unnecessary and horribly cruel". This is satire.
