Hi everyone! I just wanted to say a big hi! to all those people that I met this weekend in toronto. Since I'm not very active here, a lot of people didn't really know I existed :) I had a great weekend; I hope that everyone else who made it there had an equally great one. You'd think this audio streaming would be so easy. It took me about an hour to get the first stream online using Shoutcast and Winamp. It's taken me months to try to figure out how to stream correctly with Icecast or even just to feed the Shoutcast beast from the same machine (unix box) as the server runs on. And I'm not much closer than I was the first night. I'm sorry for all the people that have been fed up with the spottyness of the stream. Until I'm finally happy with the stream, you will find I've taken a step back to the beginning and put the Winamp streamer PC back online and put the Shoutcast Server back online too. The simplicity is back one again. Just cick the link below or put it in Winamp/Realplayer8 and you'll hear Fruvous in all its 24kbps glory. http://fruheadradio.no-ip.com/fruheadradio.pls I've also squashed that 'null' problem with the website with a really big bandaid. You can get to it at: http://fruheadradio.no-ip.com/ As for the Concert on Damand, it's officially offline. It didn't work the way I wanted it to and no-one ever really looked at it. I'll keep trying to get better streamer software online and running. I think I may have a lead as to why the 56k streams are dieing, but I can't get the support for any of this software anywhere. I'll keep looking though. in the meantime, this exsisting setup WILL stay online. I won't touch it! I'll be working on an update that will allow me to better detect when my ISP kicks my connection and changes my IP address. This is currently out of my control as I don't have the 'static IP' option. For the less technical, If my IP address changes, You loose connection to me and my DNS name 'fruheadradio.no-ip.com' won't work till it get's the new IP address. I have some ideas to help with this, but little time. Speaking of little time, I can't listen to the stream 24/7. I also currently cannot remotely start.stop the stream. So if it gets messed up due to the PC crashing or (less common) the Server dieing, I ask that you (as the listener) send me a quick e-mail at tdp@mindless.com telling me and I'll fix it as soon as I get to the box (aka get home) Well, I can't end a newsletter without the soon to be standardized request for shows. If you have any shows on CD or mp3 that you can send, please contact me and I'll coordinate with you. As always, I may have 24+ hours of shows, but they get boring after the 100th time. Thanks for the time and feedback is always welcome. Send it all to tdp@mindless.com. - --Wes ------------------------------ Date: 19 Feb 2001 13:39:16 -0500 From: pirmann@panix.com (David Pirmann) Subject: Pictures from Saturday @ The Opera House Hello, Find pictures of Saturday night's show at: http://www.quuxuum.org/~pirmann/frucon/ Enjoy! - -Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 13:26:38 -0600 (CST) From: Lynne Subject: Jian Mar/Apr Dates Picked up a sheet w/ some dates you all might be interested in... It's only the 3rd show that I've been to, so I don't even feel qualified to give a review *grin* It's probably also worth pointing out that it's the largest show I've been to. The opening act was The Supers ( www.thesupers.com ). They didn't strike me as the sort of music that would be universally accepted by fruheads, but they were pretty good... Go check'em out! They took the stage around 9:30, and played for an hour. Fruvous hit the stage around 11:00 after half an hour of Cal and others prepareing the stage. (I don't think the half hour is normal, is it?) Fr|vous was amazing, I thought. The guys seemed to be having a really great time, and were obviously more energetic than normal, given that they haven't played a show in so long. The audience was amazing too.. I imagine that's pretty well the norm for a Fr|con related show though. I don't know exactly when the show ended, and I have very little idea of what the setlist consisted of, but I'm pretty sure it was a hair over two hours. They came back on stage for 3 encores (5 songs). Noteable happenings include a group of people from the audience giving the guys a large paper fish, which appeared to be signed, after they played Pisco (sorry to whoever it was that did that, I didn't see who you were), and Jian looking rather ridiculous wearing Tanya's (Elfy's) feathered boa - Dave Pirmann got a great shot of it.. check out his pictures from a few posts back. I'm not even going to attempt a setlist, due to having a terrible memory for such things. I remember for sure that they played GE&H, KOS, Drinking song, Pisco, If Only You Knew, and michigan militia, but not in that order *grin* The venue was in essence, a very large room, with a balcony. I was on the balcony, very close to the railing, and quite glad not to be down on the floor. it looked uncomfortably crowded. As for the con itself, it was great. So many friendly people, all giving out hugs :) The open mic stuff was really great. The performace of "Moo Time" particularly sticks out in my mind :) That's just a quick impression of con... I'll let someone else tell more about that, cuz I'm getting tired of typing. Now... somebody post a better review of the show! Yes - I quite enjoyed them and would describe it as pop music with 3 or 4 part harmonies. This band also has a Fruvous connection in that the lead singer either is or was in Tory Cassis' band. >Fr|vous was amazing, I thought. The guys seemed to be having a really >great time, and were obviously more energetic than normal, given that >they haven't played a show in so long. The audience was totally amazing - well beyond what I saw at the other Fricon shows I was at for Frucon 2. From the opening roar of applause to the spontaneous round of "Happy Birthday" for Dave to the Pisco fish, it was just amazing to see a crowd that in to the show. It seemed that every Fruhead on the continent who could come was there and it showed - plus the guys were having a lot of fun. Far be it for me to say the band should only play 2 shows a year, but if it produces show like that one, I dunno. The setlist itself was nothing special and they played most of the "hits". I'll try to recall it from memory - and the order is close, but screwed up in the middle... The Drinking Song I wasn't really timing things, but I think the show clocked in at well over 2 hours. Let's all hope there'll be more great shows like that one! jordan - -- Jordan McClure (jordan@fnordia.com) http://fnordia.com - -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 04:30:50 GMT From: Todd Evans Subject: My Frucon Experience Hi Fruheads! Having just returned from a very rewarding weekend in Toronto, I thought I would try to post some kind of review type thing. The fun really started for me on Friday night at the Lewiston Bridge just northwest of Buffalo. Instead of the usual unpleasant 50 - 60 year old customs agent I've usually encountered at the Canadian border, I was greeted by a very attractive young 20-ish woman who looked exceptionally bored. Here is a transcript of our conversation: Agent: Where from? Me: Atlanta, Georgia. Agent: American? Me: Yes, Ma'am. (I am from the South, don't forget.) : ) Agent: Where ya goin'? Me: Toronto. Agent: What for? Me: A concert. Agent: (smiling) What concert? Me: Moxy Fruvous. Agent: (big smile) Go on in! Saturday morning (after walking to the Eaton Centre and getting very confused by which bus/trolley/subway to take) I arrived at Frucon about 10:30 AM. My first volunteer gig was the video room, made easy by A.J.'s meticulous preparations - I really didn't have to do anything! A.J. did an outstanding job compiling the videos, and his enthusiasm for them was infectious. It was important to me to see the videos, since as a new Fruhead I'd NEVER seen them on television before. Seeing the video presentation was the absolute best way for me to get a more complete introduction to the FruLad's personalities. Highlights included the riotous "Cedric Fruvous" video and a Canadian TV cooking segment featuring Murray and Dave preparing Pork Tenderloin (and singing about it, obviously) accompanied by one of the funniest (and flakiest) TV hosts I've ever seen (whose name I've forgotten). Thanks again to A.J. doing such a great job putting the videos together. Later, after filling up on Pizza Pizza, it was my turn to help at the check-in table. By this time it was already 2:00 PM, and most everyone was already there. Another easy job for this volunteer! The good thing about this shift was that this was the time that Murray and Jian were supposed to arrive. Of course they were a little late, much to the dismay of a very conscientious Fiona, who kept a watchful eye on the door. When Murray arrived he greeted us and happily took his nametag and put it around his neck. When Jian arrived a few minutes later, he said "hi," took his nametag, and just sort of looked at us as if to say "why do I need to wear a nametag?" He had a point, as he usually does. The Q/A session with Murray, Jian, video director Margaret Malandruccolo and host Jaymz Bee was incredible. It was here (and also later at the show) that I realized that Murray Foster is the funniest man on earth. Jian was incredibly insightful and honest, which was to be expected. Jaymz Bee was very charismatic, and his energy made for a very fun atmosphere. I really enjoyed the Q/A session a great deal - thanks to everyone who helped to put that together. Then it was off to the trolley ride back to the hotel, with my raffle prize in hand! The show at The Opera House was everything I expected it to be and more. The setlist couldn't have been more fan-friendly (IMHO) and the crowd's enthusiasm was beyond belief. I've attempted to piece together a setlist, even though by the time I hit 'send' there will probably be several more accurate lists already posted. The beginning and the end of the set as I have it listed is pretty accurate, but the middle is kind of mixed up. I'll let someone else who may have written it down handle the details. Here is the list: Michigan Militia Jockey Full of Bourbon Horseshoes Fly B.J. Don't Cry The Lazy Boy My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors The Present Tense Tureen Johnny Saucep'n The Kids' Song Get in the Car Boo Time I Will Hold On Independence Day My Poor Generation Pisco Bandito Video Disco Bargainville Guinea Pig If Only You Knew You Will Go To the Moon Nuits de Reve Stuck in the 90's Psycho Killer King of Spain Green Eggs and Ham Believe The Drinking Song There were too many highlights to even begin to mention them all, but my favorite was the look on Murray's face when he saw the big white fish dancing over the crowd during Pisco Bandito. Kudos to whoever made that thing. My favorite feature of the big paper Pisco was the money hanging from his mouth, which Mike (I think) promptly snatched away! Another highlight was Jian's very touching rant about the recent bombing of Iraq. Green Eggs and Ham was so funny I was in tears. I've never seen a band have so much fun on stage together. I knew they were versatile, but seeing them in person made me realize that they are even more versatile than I could have ever imagined. The whole evening was made even better by the fact that I met some really nice people - Hi Tony and Barb! Thanks again to everyone who helped to make Frucon weekend such a great time!
