You know, I was introduced to Medeski Martin and Wood when I bought Shackman solely because it had a quote on the outside of it that said "An ass-shaking testament to the holy groove". It was a good album. And These Apples is my favorite on that disc. Todd, if you can find out how to buy it, check out Johny Vegas's Super Cool American. Jian said to the crowd that IWHO was originally recorded in a way that was intended to be friendly to the commercial radio format (my words, not his). On the last day of recording, they went back and did it in a way that the band felt was more true to the intent of the song. Maybe the producer was just not on board with it. As one who REALLY likes Thornhill, I must also say that some of the production stuff drives me nuts, like the questionable electronic rhythm stuff in IWHO and MPG. What is that all about? An album is done by both parties and I'd assume that both parties had hands all over the place. Picking the stuff you don't like and assuming it's the producer because Jian would *never* do something like that isn't reasonable to me. The artists in this case rave about said producer so I'd figure that they were happy with his handiwork. Personally (and I think we've talked about this before), I don't mind the background rhythms in My Poor Generation. It keeps the beat standard while the rest of the song gets kinda lazy and it's the tempo laid down by the weird percussion that makes the anthem style work to me. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Dec 1999 10:21:56 -0800 From: spy4you@post.com Subject: Find Out (ANYTHING) About (ANYONE) ! //////////////////////////////////////// one time mailing- no need to remove //////////////////////////////////////// CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION YOU WANT TO KNOW. Invoking the old "it sounds nothing like the live version" argument. I guess it's a valid one . . . to a point. Even a band like Fruvous is fairly limited live. They've only got instruments and voices (yeah, yeah . . . and effects pedals, but bear with me). In the studio, though, they've got a wealth of other resources. The studio is like a playground . . . a new place for an artist to express new ideas and concepts that can't be brought out in a live performance. There's no rule that says studio recordings need to be anything like their live counterparts; "Message" should be a textbook example of that. Whether one version is inferior to another is a personal choice, but overall I'd *hope* artists would be willing to make full use of studio tools if that's their wish. - --Kate ------------------------------ Date: 06 Feb 2001 00:06:58 GMT From: piscopinto@aol.com (PISCOPINTO) Subject: Re: Thornhill was Re: Rumours of the End >> As one who REALLY likes Thornhill, I must also say that some of the >> production stuff drives me nuts, like the questionable electronic >> rhythm stuff in IWHO and MPG. My particular gauge is the way the songs sounded live versus record, which both parties could be responsible for... the production I really liked in YWGTTM and Wood versus Thornhill... and some of the other stuff Dixon had worked on before, which I didn't really care for. I think one of the band members told me "Well, he's worked with Matthew Sweet!" Of course, I instantly knew, and proved myself right by checking, that he CO-produced ONE cut on Matthew's first solo CD in 1986, a cd that Matthew would probably not be too wild about sharing with everyone:) But yeah, there was a lot of choices that could have been made by anyone in that studio-- I'm just saying that although Thornhill has some very strong songs, I can't listen to it as much as the previous studio recordings. Keeping the real discussions going! Yeah! Surprisingly--and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who's felt this way--I've found Fruvous to go the exact opposite...they tend to do more experimenting and playing *on* stage than off ^_^ I'm not sure how to describe it, really...the material on their albums always sounds more...ah...limited, in comparison to the stuff they do live. I heard Michigan Milita live before buying YWGTTM, and felt prone to go crawling back to the stage... Call me crazy, but I never much cared for their studio work. ^^ Heck I even prefer the Indie Tape to, say, B-ville...they just sound better with less production. ^_^ There's > no rule that says studio recordings need to be anything like their live > counterparts; "Message" should be a textbook example of that. I agree ^_^ Whether one > version is inferior to another is a personal choice, but overall I'd *hope* > artists would be willing to make full use of studio tools if that's their > wish. ^_^ Hmmm... I bought R.E.M.'s Reckoning on the same day I bought Thornhill; both of which were, coinsidentally, produced by Dixon...Thornhill I greatly dislike (except for Earthquakes and Splatter^2, those just sound damn cool ^_^), and Reckoning I'm still not too crazy about...shall I be knitting myself a pair of asbestos underwear now, or...? ^_^ - -- miyax, the Evil and Sinister Prime Minister of the Silver Millennium turnip-rat-ant-type person neko-musume minx rabbit Admiral of Starfleet Queen of wosisname planet olympic medal-winning tonguebather ahs-m goddess of desire fuckhead catgirl undressed champion of AHSM and defender of hentai princess cuddle-chan (bwa ha ha) $:0`0:$x,88,x$:0`0:$xx$:0`0:$x,88,x$:0`0:$xx$:0`0:$$:0`0:$ the Interesting Link of the Month hq @ http://secondhandwonder.virtualave.net "*Next time*, am wantink dinner and movie *first*." - Pitr ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V5 #40 *******************************************
