In discovering a new side of themselves? In fleshing out their talents? I don't think Thornhill was *that* much of a Messainic output. Good tunes, no doubt. Crowd pleasers, yes. Radio-friendly (if that matters to you)? More than ever. But it just didn't inspire me. Fruvous did the playful->pop from Bargainville to Wood, and I remember and participated in all the comments that occurred at that time. Seeing them do it again from YWGTTM (or Live Noise if you're a purist) just wasn't as exciting. Sorry if my saying that insults you. > Hugo also says: > > Nothing against those people who discovered the band > > more recently than not, but take a look around you at who is as > > committed to the band as you are. > What do you mean by that, Hugo, and just how am I supposed to take that > comment as "nothing against" me? The ice on this topic always tends to get a bit thin. Let me try to clarify. My comments at length were not aimed to discredit or take meaning away from people who discovered the band more recently than myself. I'm not saying the quality of fandom is at all related to length of time as a fan or anything of the sort. What I *was* saying was that since I've been listening to the band *while* they were going through their growth and experimentation, my perspective (and those who were listening prior to myself) is different. Most of the crowd discovered the band after 2 or 3 albums. Some earlier. Some yesterday. Some will on Feb. 17. I maintain interest, but since I 'grew' *with* the band instead of learning of the growth in one shot, it does change how I look at them and their music. Here's an example for the flipside (it may be a poor one): I've only recently (1998) discovered the amazingness that is The Nields. I was able to base my love for their amazing talents and music based on almost 10 years of recorded music in a very short span of time. Some of the people on the Nields Nook have been following the band since the Nields sisters' were two the first time around. I won't pretend to understand as much about how the band has grown as they have -- I'm madly trying to catch up enough to understand what I need to feed my Nields fetish. When I look at the entire body of Nields music, there's no way I would have the same perspective on a newer album because I discovered it so close to every one of their other albums. Does that change my fandom? No. Do I suggest that it changes other people's? No. (Fandom meaning degree of insanity / dedication to the band) > I don't mean for my comments to Hugo to come across as > personal. I swear - I really mean that! I just get very frustrated at > the timing of those comments. No worries. I'm well-charred and as you may have noticed, no stranger to voicing what can be controversial opinions. Good discussion has so much potential. > I think the last thing we need to be > doing at a time like this is suggesting that Fruvous isn't worth > continuing - especially in a forum that the guys could possibly read. This I'm not at all worried about. Not all of them have ever read it. Rumour says not one of them is even reading it currently. More importantly, I think they appreciate honest opinion on their stuff better than fawning or inane commentary on scents and clothing. The inane comments have always drawn more flack from the band onstage than honest opinion and criticism ever have. All the guys are intellectuals at heart and welcome a solid discussion more than anything -- at least from what I've noticed. - -- "You need a rag when you're dealing with a dipstick." -- Mike Bullard, "Open Mike" *MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO* Hugo Rodrigues Hugs on the Undernet / 49272270 ICQ Underemployed journalist http://www3.sympatico.ca/hrodrigues Forever Fruvous!!! *MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Feb 2001 14:14:35 -0600 From: Keith Rose Subject: "insanity on the Airwaves" 2/3/2001 Today on "Insanity on the Airwaves" we will have a special guest in the studio. Lots of great opinions - I especially liked the comparison of 'Thornhill' to 'Maybe You Should Drive.' (What a great, underrated album that is - especially "These Apples." That song kicks my ass every time!) I'd like to say that I don't resent the guys for their Touring Hiatus for one second. I fact, I think it is absolutely necessary for them. I still don't believe that the hiatus signals the end of the band. The biggest proof of that is the fact that they ACKNOWLEDGE the hiatus. If there were no scheduled tour dates for 2001 AND there was no explanation, THEN I think we could be concerned about them stopping. R.E.M. took a touring hiatus for five years. For most of the other bands that I like, taking a year off from touring is the norm. I have a confession to make - I like progressive rock. You know, like Yes, Genesis, The Moody Blues... "dinosaur bands." Go ahead - take your best shot. (I've heard them all!) A lot of these kinds of bands have more lawyers than band members. When you follow that kind of music like I do, you're used to bands shifting gears, taking LOTS of time off and generally letting you down. MF's year long absence from riding in the Frubus seems like nothing to me. I'm sure they'll return fresh and ready to go. Last night I spent some time looking at all of the pictures that are on Fruvous.com. I was looking at the photos that are from the 1999 tour postcards and something really struck me about them. You can tell by just looking at the pictures that these guys really LIKE each other. You can see it in their eyes. Plus from what I've read, Jian seems really defensive concerning comments about there being no more Fruvous. Maybe some folks who have been to some of his latest shows can share more about that. I wish I could go see Jian on Friday the 16th, but my plane lands in Buffalo at 10:40 PM. : ( I'd be surprised if they decided to hang it up. At the same time, I do acknowledge that it could happen. My experience has been that whenever one of my favorite bands decides to quit, the knowledge that there will be no more new output tends to take some of the magic away from the listening experience. I'd just hate to see that happen for me personally. I just got an e-mail from the Frucon committee that said that Jian and Murray would be doing a Q&A session at the Con. I'm sure we'll be able to get our questions answered there. Until later! Todd SugarFly26@aol.com wrote: > > Tim the deadhead sayeth: > >
