Fruvous is currently on extended hiatus, possibly for the most part of 2001. The only planned show is on February 17 in Toronto. Members of the band will also attend the Annual Fruvous Convention the same day. Info on the Con can be found at http://frucon.tripod.com. Tickets for the concert itself can be purchased with Ticketmaster, or on at http://www.maplemusic.com (cheaper). No plans for a Fruvous album have been revealed, but Dave's solo album will be release in the near future, and Jian will be recording his own solo venture in the spring. Jian can currently be found performing live in small venues across Ontario. Current info can also be found at http://www.fruvous.com, http://www.jianghomeshi.com and http://www.davidmatheson.ca. The Red Rag of Courage By: Aaron Birenbaum Shmata, cloth, scrap, tatter, all these words are synonymous with rag. But flag? Is rag a synonym for flag? A flag is something you wave after you win a war, when you elect a leader, which you hang outside schools and generates pride. However, would you expect your own countryman and elected official calling your own flag a "rag?" Deputy Premier of Quebec Bernard Landry did so, and many Anglophones and Francophone are appalled by his startling behaviour. Allow me to start from the beginning. It is 1985, the founding of the Parti Quebecois, cutely nicknamed the Blockers. The founder, Rene Levesque announces his Party's goals as to make Quebec a strong, more distinct part of Canada. There, that's him in the corner, that's him in the spotlight, Bernard Landry losing his vote. Landry would not succeed Rene Levesque, as he lost the vote to be the next leader. Now all Rene Levesque has is a main street in downtown Montreal named after him. Then there was Bouchard, who held opinion polls and a referendum in 1995 to ask Quebec, "Do we want to be our own country?" With a near split down the middle, the majority said, "I AM CANADIAN!" On January 12, after running the province for a number of years, Bouchard decided to step down, after realizing he probably could have ran faster in his suit, after eating a congratulatory dinner for Chretien than his Party's advancement. Who to replace him, Canada aske? Gil Duceppe, the leader of the Federal arm of Bouchard's party, did not grab the chance so the right-hand man said, "Prisente" Landry is a more aggressive, more separatist leader than the Formerly Honourable (he used to be Premier) Bouchard. To find out what Landry thinks of Quebec, fill in this SAT question based on his speech. Quebec is to Canada as Scotland is to A) England B) Ireland C) Englishland or D) Scotland Answer : A (if you had difficulty with this question please look into Devry) Not only is he arrogant, he has no competition. There is no way he can lose, in Quebec's nearly one party system. His only actual rival, until last week, was Health Minister Pauline Marois but she has lost all her following and now willingly admits that Landry is the PQ leader. So what sparked the fuel that would set this country's automobile going 150km on the 401? Ottawa, you know, the place where all the people that are in charge of Canada work, offered $18 million (Canadian) in funding for the Quebec City Zoo on two conditions. 1) That all signs be in both official languages. 2) That the Canadian Flag hang over the entrance. To this, Landry replied, "Were not for sale, and (Quebec) would never sell itself for bits of red rag". (Translation from French.) This is the spark, but what keeps this feud going? Landry apologized, and said that he did not mean comparing the Canadian Flag to something you clean your car with, get all dirty, treat like dirt itself, then throw out (a rag). However, the real issue here is why he would say no. Why? He is too proud. Not only did he refuse the offer he pronounced that Quebec has only one language and rejects bilingualism. Stay tuned for the show "Language COPS" focussing on language police brutality. He also hates the fact that there actually are Canadian Flags in Quebec, and claims he can see enough flags from Quebec City, all of them across the provincial border in Ottawa. So where are we headed? It is obvious at this point that the leader of the Parti will be Premier, and it is also quite obvious that Landry is head of the Parti. Are you worried about Quebec separating? Remember back in 1985 when Levesque had the same ideas? Remember When Bouchard became the Parti leader and had the same idea? The more important question is "Is Seperatism dying?" The Parti's popularity is going down, and we also have been witness to the destruction of other party's, like NDP and PC. PC had a lot of their boys become the Prime Minister and now they barely qualify for official party status. Will Landry's fire reignite the people of Quebec? Or Will the red rag of courage smolder the hopes to ashes? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 18:36:09 GMT From: Katherine Maheux Subject: Re: Rumours of the End Marie-Claude Danis wrote: I'm really sorry to do this to you, MC, but... > Marie-Claude Danis > http://verticalcrawl.com > > "Me and some guy I was supposed to hate > Two gladiators coming out of grade eight > Thirteen and afraid to get caught > The fight was set for Mac's parking lot > All my instincs telling me to hide > I swallowed hard and I swallowed my pride" > -- Jian Ghomeshi, 'I Always Made a Lousy Boy' It's "Thirteen and I didn't want to get caught" Kath, who over the past few weeks has turned into the major Jian lyric archive, it seems (use me use me use me) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 19:16:18 GMT From: Katherine Maheux Subject: Re: Frucon pub event: a question for the masses FredGoldberg@ieee.org wrote: > > My favorite beer is Guinness. Well, I'm not saying that they're definitely going to just go back to touring, or that they all want the same thing for the rest of their lives. I was just noting that it looks like Jian's not giving up on the band just yet. The rest of them I've had little to no contact with since the end of the tour. Would I personally like to see the band reunite? I don't know. It depends. If half of them have had to be talked into it, then no. What I'd love to see them do is whatever makes them happy (unless they really piss me off, at which point their happiness will no longer be a consideration). And what if only two of the four want to go back on tour? Would it be such a crime to replace a couple of guys? I don't know... I have a couple of suggestions for good replacements ;) I'm not terribly broken up that there's no Fruvous at the moment. I'm content with stalking Jian ;) And Danny Michel. And Martina Sorbara. They usually say something like "Their best days are behind them," or "They should quit while they're ahead." This baffles me. Why would anyone so seemingly dedicated to a band, so much so that they take the time to read the newsgroup, want the band to split? For me, a band is not like a sitcom. Sure, a person can say something like "Seinfeld was on two seasons too long," and that might be true for some people, even though I don't agree. But to me, saying that Fruvous has "hit a plateau" reduces them to nothing more than just a comedy act whose joke, apparently to some people, is running thin. I don't agree. I'd like to ask Hugo a few questions. First of all, you say: > I feel as though they've already been in neutral as a group for a few > years. What is it about 'Thornhill' and 'The "C" Album' that you feel is sub par? These are two very different, diverse albums - both representing the most recent output from the band. Does anyone here really think that either of these albums represents a downward slide in quality from Moxy Fruvous? If so, I respectfully disagree. Hugo also says: > Nothing against those people who discovered the band > more recently than not, but take a look around you at who is as > committed to the band as you are. What do you mean by that, Hugo, and just how am I supposed to take that comment as "nothing against" me? Do you mean that I will look around myself at the con and notice that all the hip and smart people don't like Fruvous as much as I do? So it's no longer "cool" to be dedicated to Fruvous. Maybe I should change my ways. Certainly as a 36 year old I am not quite as enthusiastic an R.E.M. fan as I was in 1985, but that doesn't mean that I am going to drop them, or that they are no longer worth my time. I'm not sure how you can think that comment is not insulting - it is. The last thing I want to do on this newsgroup is start another flame war, and I don't mean for my comments to Hugo to come across as personal. I swear - I really mean that! I just get very frustrated at the timing of those comments. I think the last thing we need to be doing at a time like this is suggesting that Fruvous isn't worth continuing - especially in a forum that the guys could possibly read. Usually when I share opinions like this in a newsgroup, I get comments like "You're just a FANBOY!" or "They don't walk on water, you know!" Fine - whatever. I just can't understand why anyone who is dedicated enough to take the time to read this newsgroup would wish for the band's demise. It just doesn't make sense to me. Sorry to cast such gloom on the newsgroup with my downer of a post, especially when there is such a fun event to look forward to! Todd (Fastening the oxygen valve on my flame suit!)
