The members of the Johny Vegas mailing list got sad news today in their email boxes. Johny Vegas, an excellent and tight pop band based out of Syracuse NY is calling it quits. I heartily recommend anyone who is near any of these shows to check them out. They have a lot of talent (especially their drummer) and put on a great show that holds your attention with pure musicality, which is a big complement in this day and age. I have copied below the email from the mailing list without permission, but I'm sure it's ok. Here are the band's last shows: November 3rd Ithaca, NY - The Nines 10pm 607-272-1888 November 4th Buffalo, NY - Nietzsche's 10pm 716-886-8539 November 11t Batesville, AR - Lyon College * November 18th Rochester, NY - Milestones 10pm 716-325-6490 December 1st New York, NY - The Bitter End 10pm 212-673-7030 December 2nd Syracuse, NY - Armory High (formerly Styleen's)10pm 315-472-2665 December 5th Winston Salem, NC - Wake Forest University * - Chad Subject: breaking up is hard to do Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 14:55:24 -0400 From: Johny Vegas To: johny vegas Greeting friends and fans of jv, We, the members of johny vegas, have labored long and hard trying to decide the best way of letting you all know what is happing with our band. We had originally intended to take the summer off to write some new tunes and get some uch needed r and r for the first time in 7 years. However, during this process we have had a change in plans and of heart. It is with much sadness that we announce the end of johny vegas. We have greatly enjoyed our time spent with you. Our concerts have provided us with much joy and fulfillment over the years. We cannot express how thankful we are to have been nvited into your lives and stereos over the years. We would very much like the opportunity to say goodbye and thank you all in person for your support. As such, we have included our official press release with this e-mail along with our FINAL concert dates. ...this is it. The End jv Breaking Up Is Hard To Do After nearly 7 years together, Johny Vegas has decided to call it quits. The Syracuse, NY rock band has been one of New York State's best drawing live bands for the last 6 years and has toured relentlessly from coast to coast. Boasting a massive fan base of more than 10,000 names on the band's mailing lists, JV has consistently sold out venues as a headliner and appeared with acts such as the Goo Goo Dolls, Barenaked Ladies, Blues Traveler and countless others. What is the reason for the split? To use a traveling analogy, Mike Miller (bass), Alex Smolinski (drums), Keith Calveric (vocals, acoustic guitar), and Mike Shimshack (guitar) simply ran out of gas. The creative spark has been extinguished and each member is looking forward to different projects. One thing is for sure, the friendship they have forged remains and the separation is both amicable and unanimous. All great things must come to an end and Johny Vegas will end its tenure with some farewell shows. Fans should definitely keep checking the band’s web site (www.johnyvegas.com) for news and information on the band members future plans and projects. The following is a list of the final Johny Vegas shows: November 3rd Ithaca, NY - The Nines 10pm 607-272-1888 November 4th Buffalo, NY - Nietzsche's 10pm 716-886-8539 November 11th Batesville, AR - Lyon College * November 18th Rochester, NY - Milestones 10pm 716-325-6490 December 1st New York, NY - The Bitter End 10pm 212-673-7030 December 2nd Syracuse, NY - Armory High (formerly Styleen's) 10pm 315-472-2665 December 5th Winston Salem, NC - Wake Forest University * *Acoustic performance featuring Keith Calveric and Mike Shimshack Also of note are the accolades bestowed upon Johny Vegas. As an independent band, the members of Johny Vegas have recorded and released 3 full-length, self-produced CD's. The combined sales of "Dog", "Super Cool American" and "Forest Hill Drive" total more than 16,000 copies. The band has also been nominated 6 times, in various categories, for the SAMMY's (Syracuse Area Music Awards) and took home last year's coveted "Best Rock Band". In 1997, the Syracuse New Times proclaimed "Super Cool American" as the #1 local release and JV was also voted "one of the twenty est unsigned rock bands" in the USA by judges of the Ticketmaster Music Showcase. Many of the songs in the Johny Vegas catalog have been used in network television including CBS's "Touched By an Angel", ESPN's "Sportscenter" and ABC's "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" and many more. The band also helped raise more than 2 (?) tons of food through the years with their annual "Music For The Needy" food drive CD and accompanying tour. ------------------------------ Date: 05 Oct 2000 01:46:10 GMT From: dgodwin1@aol.com (DGodwin1) Subject: Re: OT: The end of Johny Vegas I would second the recommendation to see Johny Vegas. They are a great band. I know the band is pro-taping, so if any tapers get out to any of these shows, please tape.
