Off of main-stream radio? I doubt it. As AJ said and Chrissy alluded too, Fruvous doesn't have the same mass-market appeal. They might make it as a "one-hit-wonder" in the states, like BNL or Lou Vega, but that would seem to be more of a matter of timing and luck than anything else. > Where do you live Dave that they don't play Fruvous on the radio? > I can guarantee that I will hear them at least once a morning when my > clock radio goes off. No particular reason, just a little summer trip. Last time I was in DC was last August. There were two Moxy Fruvous in-store performances and a CTY reunion. The reunion was my excuse for the concerts. I was still making excuses then. Riding the metro, walking about DC, going to the bead store, my body and mind kept anticipating a Fruvous concert. I was traveling. I was in DC. There must be music coming, right? I knew there was no concert but I couldn't convince my jumping heart of that fact. Where's my band, it kept asking. When do we get to dance? I'm glad I'm going away. I'm glad I have to do without them for six months. I'm genuinely afraid of this. I'm afraid that I've become dependent. I'm admitting it right now, I truly believe that I am obsessed with this band to an unhealthy degree. Not because I'd stalk the band members or anything because I wouldn't. This is entirely contained within my head and it can hurt no one but me... It's because I shake and cry from missing them. Because the money I was supposed to have to spend when I go to college has gone to pay for concerts. Because it's been less than a week since I saw them last and all I can think of is Murray's last hug and wishes for a safe and happy trip and Jian's semi blowing me off because he was with a woman, Dave's kiss on my cheek when I told him how much I'd miss him and Mike's firm handshake and amused expression when I address him as "Mr, Ford." Because the only reason I go anywhere or have any friends is because of them. Maybe Fruvous wasn't a great example, because they do have a strong intellectual component to their music. But I am a huge fan of Guster, Jump Little Children, Granian, and They Might Be Giants (who, I suppose, have somewhat of an intellectual component as well). None of these groups get even a tenth of the airtime that the other produced groups get, and some get nearly no airtime at all. I wouldn't say that these groups are for the intellectual elite. >The masses, frankly don't have the intellectual capacity to handle it. >The fact is that >Fruvous appeals mostly to the intellectual elite. The Indigo Girls are pretty big in many places -- and at least a few of their songs are played on many radio stations. But it takes way too much time for groups such as they to get even that much attention as a result of many of the produced groups pushing them out the way to get air time. >(And they aren't far from that right >now in some places). Sure, it would be great for them to reach the big time - we don't just want to keep them all to ourselves. ;) They've had national exposure (Conan O'Brien), interviews in local papers and on TV and radio, etc., when they tour and even appeared in Billboard magazine, Spin, and a small blurb in People (among other articles - check out FDC for those). These articles were prior to BSB, n'sync and Britney - what's the problem? Fruvous, to me, seems like they want to perform what "they" want to perform and want to do it in their fashion, and not what the record company has in mind. They are a band that's hard to market to just one type of audience - and even when you attend a show, you can see the range of ages there. It's not just kids/teenagers - but parents and grandparents as well who enjoy their music and banter. Second encore was The Drinking Song. During the King intro, Jian was hyping the king as the Frülads' choice for George W.'s running mate, being conservatives and all... When Mike finally got around to getting the king out, he turned out to be...Vance Gilbert!! (He came out in the hat and all...) I think Vance would have sung the song, but he didn't know the words. It evolved into a "Once I Was The King Of Spain" rap thing. Vance just sang "Once I Was The King Of Spain" over and over again. It was quite silly. After the show, me & my group of pals were talking to Jian and my friend Colin told Jian to sign Dave's setlist that I had. I made a crack about how I really wanted Dave to sign it and Jian took it and wrote "Fuck You" in big letters. What a crazy guy, eh? Anyway, I've gotta go. At some point I stopped intellectualizing the show; instead, I was just experiencing it. Honestly, I listened to Jian introduce I Will Hold On by talking about _Love in the Time of Cholera_, which I've heard many times, and I got all choked up. I also didn't see Believe coming. I hadn't seen a show since the beginning of May, and the decision to go to NYC was made at the last minute. While I loved the 7-25 show because of the four solos, 7-26 was special because it seemed like I was seeing them for the first time, but with the advantage of knowing all the songs. The King headdress was, indeed, the strangest thing I'd seen on Dave's head since the Cincinatti wig. BTW, Lose That Girl with Sean Altman was super, and we did a nice job on TDS. After it was over, I remarked that I'd been thinking about songs I'd like to hear during the day and almost all of them were played. Nice show, plus I got to hang out with a lot of cool people.
