David - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We must love each other or die." --W. H. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS." --Mahatma Gandhi - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a nutshell, before I get to the actual interpretation for you, I'll make Jian the central character since rumor has it he wrote the english text of it before they made it french, so Jian is the speaker. Jian fell in love with a woman. She leaves him suddenly and is gone from his life. Jian starts searching for her and doesn't find her, which leads him to go insane searching for her in a crazy world in which he is questioning everyone for help finding her. Without further ado, Nuits de reve. Not word for word but basically the essence of it in English. I'm pretty sure that Nuits de reve means dreamlike nights. So when it says "Ou sont passes toutes nos nuits de reve" I'm assuming he means "Where have our dreamlike nights gone?" This is not word for word in all places, but it is a translation. Loin des guerres et des caisses popularies y'avait de l'amour dans l'air L'effervescence d'une nouvelle danse. Elle était nue, j'la laissais faire. Draps de soie en désarroi dans le chambre. Nuits décadance sans censure. Entends-tu venir le froid qui frémit, qui murmure? Away from wars, the public and in private times, There was love. It was all so new, like a dance. She was naked I didn't make her change. Disorderly silk sheets in the bedroom Nights of sinning without judgment. You come to understand the cold that trembles and barely speaks but whispers..... Où sont passées toutes nos nuits de rêve? Aide-moi à les retrouver. Tu disais qu't'allais toujours m'aimer. Where have our nights of dreams gone? Help me in finding them You said you would always love me.... A cent à l'heure on étouffe son coeur. Les utopies deviennent ambigues. L'horlage soone chaque heure ivrogne des amants devenus détenus. Draps de soie en désarroi dans la chambre. Nuits remplies de passions perdues. Mais un matin elle l'embrassa froidement et disparut We've smothered and destroyed what was so special and unique about this relationship. Our sanctuary becomes tainted, general and much like the far off places from which it used to differ. The clock sounds every drunken hour since lovers became lost inside (or the scenery lost the speciality). Disorderly silk sheets in the bedroom. Nights tucked in a lost passion But one morning she coldly kissed me and disappeared. Où sont passées toutes nos nuits de rêve? Aide-moi à les retrouver. Tu disais qu't'allais toujours m'aimer. Where have our dreamlike nights gone? Help me find them You said you would always love me.... Sous la neige, la fin du manège. Des traces de pas à jamais perdues. Mes jours sont durs, j'ai pu de futur. Elle m'a laissé seul les mains nues. Draps de soie abandonnés dans le chambre. Nuits blanches à écumer des rues sans issue. J'te cherche partout, je deviens fou dans la foule inconnue The traces of our love are lost forever beneath the snow. My days are tough, I fear (or have lost) my future. She left me empty handed. On a blizzard-filled night, I've come to a dead end road. I search for her everywhere and am going crazy in this world that knows nothing of where she is... Ou sont passe toutes nos nuits de reve? Aide-moi a les retrouver. Tous disais qu-t'aller toujour maimer. Where have our dreamlike nights gone? I am sad that both of my two immediate picks turned out to already have been mentioned by the time I finished reading all the postings, so I am just going to go ahead and vote for them again: It all depends quite what you mean by "incredible," but depending on mood, I am leaning toward - "And I'm pissed that I'm not getting younger, getting pretty getting loved getting laid," because it's the best song lyric to spontaneously chime in on since Simon and Garfunkel wrote the line "Makin' love in the afternoon with Cecelia up in my bedroom" ... and also ... "In a year or two, we'll see this distance and this heartache through," because it feels very true in my current long-distance relationship situation. Those both happen to be from "Thornhill," now that I think of it - for a non-Thornhill lyric, how about, "Let's take one last flight, you and I?" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 02:33:42 GMT From: drea25@my-deja.com Subject: Re: Thanks, Folks > I want to also send a special hi to "Camp Fruhead".
