Even though they aren't 21 and my dad isn't specifically THEIR parent? I'm going to be semi-deligent and not write a review (so I have time to write my paper). I *do* want to share a random and funny moment at FRFF. I was standing in the Merch tent with my friend kat oggling the many things I wanted to buy if only I had any money. On my bookbag (which I'm sure some of you have seen) is the word "Frühead." A boy (I'm guessing he was about 13 yrs old) looks at me and asks "whats a fruh head" (uh pronounced like the oo in the word flood). When I figured out what he was asking, I said "It's a fan of the band Moxy Fruvous." "No, really." he demanded. I laughed. Someone behind me said that it was true. The boy then remembered who they were and said "oh, they're the guys that sing that Kick in the Ass song, right?" Anyway, Falconridge made my summer. I just wanted to thank of all of you who came out and supported my buddy, Butch Ross, as he made his New Artist Showcase debut at Falcon Ridge this weekend. Everyone here at Permanent Records really appreciates the way Fruheads always make time to check out new music while still remaining loyal to their favorite band. That's incredibly cool. I want to also send a special hi to "Camp Fruhead". Thanks for having music up there on the hill. Butch says he's pretty sure you're the nicest audience he's ever played for. And Butch's labelmate, Adam Brodsky, had a fun time doing singalongs with you guys on Saturday night. Moxy Fruvous has been kind enough to invite Adam to open for them this Saturday night. I hope those of you in the Syracuse area will come early and check out Adam's real show. I can't remember the last time I posted here, but I had such an amazing time at Falcon Ridge that I thought I'd say a few things. First, even thought it's not really related to Fruvous, I know there are enough people here who understand. Eddie From Ohio were just amazing! I remember seeing them last year, and based on that I knew I didn't want to miss them. I wasn't disappointed! I picked up a CD of theirs, although admittedly as much for my instrumental heroes (Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas) as them. I'll have to listen to it at some point! :) Now about Fruvous... I guess I'll start at the beginning. On Friday night, they did the FRFF "welcome message", and played killer tents. They did one of the verses they left off the C album, but not the other one. I really wish I knew why! Saturday afternoon, they were part of the Woody Guthrie workshop, which I must say was one of the highlights of the festival! There were a lot of performers on stage for this one (including the Nields), and fruvous was the last to play their song. Jian introduces it by saying that they had planned to play a song that everyone would know, but then they were in Oklahoma the night before, looking in a desk, and discovered a Woody song that nobody had ever heard before. At this point, they launch into what I guess is part 2 of the tent saga, the "Talkin' Tent Pole Blues". Wow. Personally, I'm not sure it was quite as successful as the debut of killer tents was last year, only because it didn't have quite the element of surprise (when they started killer tents last year, it took until the first verse to realize that it wasn't improv!). Basically, the tents turned out to be the good guys, by eating people who had a negative impact on the festival. Saturday night was their mainstage show. They were scheduled for 50 minutes, but because they were the last act, they played about 75. Mike was even more crazy than usual! I don't really remember much of the setlist (I'm sure someone has it!), but it was a fun show. Sunday morning, they did the Gospel Wake Up Call, with EFO and the Nields. It was fun, but didn't really blow me away like a lot of the things this weekend. I was expecting more, especially with those three bands on the same stage at the same time! Sunday afternoon they played the Tall Tales workshop, and did the Kids Song and Boss. This festival was a good reminder of just how great these guys are with the fans. They hung around after the workshops to talk and sign stuff, in addition to doing their time at the signing booth Sunday morning (the line was insane, so I didn't even bother, figuring I'd have a better shot after the workshop later that day.). Jian and Murray were around after the workshop, so I said hi and got my guitar signed. A few minutes later, I'm standing around waiting to see if either Mike or Dave would show up, and Jian calls me over by name when someone had a question about the age policy at the bottom line. Later that day, when we were heading back to the car to leave, we just happened to run into Dave, so we asked if he had a sharpie on him to sign the guitar, and he says no, but he knew where he could get one. He left us, ran back to wherever it was that he could get one, and came running back. Stuff like that is just amazing. Thanks guys!!! And now a very special thanks to the occupants of "budgie dome" Saturday night (or should I say Sunday morning?). After dragging ourselves up the hill, and wandering around for a while, we finally ran into it, so I stood a little outside, got my guitar out and watched for a minute. Then everybody encouraged the "shadow guitarist" to come in and do something. As soon as I figured out what song I wanted to do, we jumped into River Valley, which of course segued into Get in the Car, which then segued into Your New Boyfriend. I think that group of songs was my favorite of the night! Unfortunately, I don't remember that many names, but I will thank Lawrence for filling in chords and leads that I couldn't remember! I'll apologize for all the songs I jumped into and promptly forgot. Thankfully, you all sang well enough to carry it without my playing! The only problem is, I keep thinking of songs that I know that we should have done. I know someone requested Early Morning Rain, and I wanted to do but everyone thought it would be a bad omen :). I would have liked to play Splatter, Splatter. How did we not play Killer Tents???? If Only You Knew or Follow the Road would have been nice. Oh well, there's always next year!! So who else can't wait for the Bottom Line shows? I'll see some of you there!! I told Dave that this was the guitar I got at age 12, handed down to Ken when he was around 14, and when Ken got a better guitar this instrument became our "festival" guitar. Dave said that having a festival guitar to bang around on is important. After this weekend, I enthusiastically agree. I wish I could have accompanied Ken and Catherine to the top of the hill, but I can't burn the midnight oil the way I used to when I was his age. Besides, he probably wanted to get away without me hanging around. Another word about the way Fruvous treats their fans - this is the 2nd time that Dave has gone out of his way to do something special for us. Of all the musicians I've come to admire over the years, this band is by FAR the best at fan-friendliness. A special thanks from me for that. And a final word from me to all the Fruheads, some of whom I hadn't seen in years - nice seeing you all again! I kind of soured on Falcon Ridge after the craziness surrounding last year's festival for us, but this one was one for the ages! See you at the Bottom Line! I'm a little worried she will be somewhat ostracized but who > knows, maybe she'll turn all the little 10-year-olds onto Fru instead??? We've been living in Britney Spears hell for a month or two, it seems like Maddie who is 6 suddenly abandoned her usually good taste to fit in with all the neighbor kids. This includes trying to give away her Canadian Boys t-shirt because the other kids "Laugh at me". Well... after Falcon Ridge she's decided that 1. Eddie From Ohio is her new favorite band 2. *Maybe* she could grow up to dance and sing like Katryna Nields rather than Britney Spears because "Katryna is prettier" 3. She will go to Falcon Ridge every year until she dies How could I even begin to count the reasons I love Falcon Ridge? It's not even the music (which is awesome), it's more the general community. We chaperoned a group of teenagers from our church again this year and it's so special to see them completely awe struck by people like Patty Larkin or EFO. I love how the artists are so at ease there and are willing to just walk around freely. Some of our group had to leave early on Sunday and were devastated at missing the Fruvous signing, so I suggested they walk around after the workshop stage and see if they were hanging out. They were, the kids apologized for bugging them and explained about having to leave early and Tom got his CD signed and Carrie got her picture taken with Jian (I teased her mercilessly about not washing off the "Jian scent" but it was just in fun) and it totally made their weekend. Maddie may only be 6, but she will remember for a *very* long time that Dar Williams told her she was a pretty little girl and Lucy Kaplansky complimented her hair, and the neighbor kids are unlikely to ever get that sort of attention from *their* musical heroes. I hope she takes her new EFO CD out on the lawn and draws a crowd. Oh, plus I got to briefly meet Lori (sleepy wave to Lori who may not have recovered yet either). I rarely place newsgroup names to faces in crowds (mainly from being too shy), so it was nice to actually meet someone.
