Well, after thinking long and hard about it, I have decided to move my Fruvous Picture Archive to photopoint.com. Here is the URL where you can access my Photo Gallery... (Be sure to bookmark it!) http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=924801 Why I'm moving it: 1. A little more permanent. 2. I can turn off the web server on my personal computer. Less exposure to hackers and other problems. 3. Less spam for me to have to deal with.... one place my e-mail address won't be sitting out on ready to be nabbed. I hope you enjoy the pics, and I hope to have more up there soon. It does contain the words "Moxy Fruvous" and figured people might be interested in knowing a bit more about this company that we have been purchasing CDs from (this is not intended to be an advertisment, I just found it interesting....) http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/jun13_maple.html MapleMusic sweet on Cdn. bands By PAUL CANTIN -- Senior Reporter, JAM! Showbiz TORONTO -- When the founders of the new Canadian music website MapleMusic.com talk about their goals, Grant Dexter and Jeff Maize studiously avoid any suggestion that what they've wrought amounts to a record label. But you can't help but wonder if old-school Canadian labels aren't keeping a close eye on the online clearing house that Dexter, Maize and their partners have created, which allows bands to sell CDs, merchandise, and eventually pay-per-download MP3s. If all goes according to plan, what they've created will offer some of the advantages of major-label distribution, without the issues of revenue-sharing, ownership and creative control that are increasingly becoming a wedge between multi-national labels and musicians. MapleMusic.com, which officially launched this month, has quietly but quickly attracted established acts like Cowboy Junkies, Skydiggers, Moxy Fruvous, The Cash Brothers, Universal Honey, The Waltons and former Weeping Tile singer Sarah Harmer, as well as acclaimed newer acts like Bird, Jim Bryson, Hawksley Workman, Tegan And Sarah, Paul MacLeod, and Flashlight. Other big-name acts are poised to sign on imminently and add their CDs and tour merchandise to the cornucopia, Dexter says. Like a record label, MapleMusic.com will distribute music for artists, as well as set up and maintain websites for the acts, as well as an overall website with information about Canadian music in general, and nationwide information about concerts and events. So how is it substantially different from what the Canadian branches of the major labels are doing? For starters, the site only charges artists a flat fee of about $3 per item, whereas a typical record label allows the artist to keep only a fraction of the retail price. As well, in return for administering the transactions online, MapleMusic.com lets its member bands maintain ownership of their own work -- something that is still a rarity in the modern music business. As well, MapleMusic.com doesn't demand exclusivity (acts are free to pursue label deals or other retail-music ventures) or long-term contracts (artists can walk away if they have a change of heart). "This is not by some guy in an MBA suit telling someone to rewrite a song because the demographic between 18 and 20 needs to hear a certain sound. This is letting artists express themselves and letting artists and fans come together in a virtual community," says Dexter. That new approach was a big attraction to Cowboy Junkies, says the band's Michael Timmins. The group is currently recording a new album and still hopes to sign with a traditional record label, but will make their participation in MapleMusic.com a pillar of whatever label deal the Junkies negotiate. "What they are offering us is amazing," he says. "(MapleMusic.com) is willing to listen and try to accommodate us as much as they can within the parameters they are working with. Getting in on the ground floor is fun because I really want to see how far this can go," says Timmins. Maize and Dexter say making a retail site that accommodated the musicians was a priority. "We felt that it was important to try and create something that was created by artists and for artists," says Maize, who also manages The Skydiggers. "So key partners in MapleMusic.com are the artists themselves. That is one of our founding principals, to make it a company, an entity that is driven from the artist's perspective." Adds Dexter, whose background is in technology: "The main thing we emphasize working with all the bands, it is YOUR way, not our way. We are here for them." The idea for MapleMusic.com began about a year and a half ago when Maize's charges, The Skydiggers, were booked to play a corporate gig for a high-tech company that employed Dexter and some colleagues, who were looking for a way to wed their knowledge of e-commerce to the music business. "A personal relationship was struck up. It just evolved and continued. Everyone would absolutely love to do something in the music industry, and here was an opportunity," says Maize, adding that both sides also shared a determination to create a fairer economic model for music-making. "Yes, we are all hard-driving capitalists, but they and we are very much fair capitalists and believe in treating people fairly and believe in giving something back." MapleMusic.com has already set up a warehouse in Kitchener, Ont., for processing orders and has worked out a deal with Canada Post that allows for fast, relatively cheap shipping. The site was started up with money from an "angel investor". The long-range plan is to attract funds from venture capitalists to expand the site. Some of the experts on the technology side are volunteering their time to help tweak the site's e-commerce engineering in return for a stake in the company. "They are jazzed on music and jazzed on creating something so unique, Dexter says. "It could be something so incredible: A Canadian music site that caters to artists." There are some big question marks about the venture, though. The success of MapleMusic.com largely depends on the desire for music buyers to get used to shopping for albums online instead of in stores. But the potential for making music without running up against the music business is a risk worth taking, says Timmins. "If someone (from a major label) comes along and says (to a band), 'Take this money and make a record and we'll sell it,' you go, 'Fine!' But as you move along, you realize, s--t, someone is making a lot of money off these records, but not us," Timmins says. "Anybody who knows business and hears about how (business) is done in the record business goes, 'What, are you kidding?' The word business doesn't go together with music. It is not a business, it is a strange kind of servitude." Like several of the other bands who signed up early for MapleMusic.com, Cowboy Junkies had an early success as part of the mainstream music business. But increasingly, that business has moved toward a kind of blockbuster mentality which has overshadowed groups like the Junkies, who still have a considerable audience, but not one large enough to attract the full attention of a major label. "As the industry is geared more to multi-million sellers and one-hit wonders, bands like us sell records and we have sold them for a long time and we sell a decent amount of them. But we are not about to have a huge smash hit. It is becoming less and less geared toward us," reckons Timmins. "There is less place for us there, so we figured before we are totally squeezed out of the industry, we would grab what's left and try to reconstitute it." As bands become more restless within the major-label framework and music fans become more accustomed to finding albums online, the lure of opting out of the traditional record business will become irresistible. At least, that's what Dexter is hoping. "We have two unmentionables with whom we're organizing coming to our site as we speak," he says cryptically. "If the site is appealing to smaller unsigned acts, I believe it's even more appealing to 'big-time' acts." ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 08:08:39 -0700 From: Milo Bloom Subject: Re: [jflick@snet.net: Falcon Ridge Showcase Announcement] I saw Coleen Sexton She was really good. Well, we've survived our Monday & Tuesday, so at long last - here's my review: After driving 6 hours (through some horrendous thunder/lightening storms, we make it to our friend, Donna's, house in Burlington. She arrives home just after we arrive & we head out for food & balloons (Sara & Kelsey wanted to give Jian balloons & some little home-made gifts for his birthday - sweet kids, right?). There's a delay at the door due to some late sound checks. Once in, and the show starts, there's an opening band: 1/2 of a group called 'Salad Days'. They were accoustic & OK (nice to hear accoustic music!) Martina comes on next - we've seen her in Toronto - & is her enjoyable self! At about 11:10 p.m., the lads come on, and so, here's my notes!: - - They open with a bit of Teddy Bear's Picnic! (way cool, 'specially for Sara, Kelsey & me as this is a great kids tune!) - - Substitute (an old Who tune) - - Horseshoes some Winooski banter (which I didn't jot down - but did y'all know Winooski is a local American Indian translation for the word Onion? - thanx, Adam H.!) - - BJ (with some after-banter about rather having a TON of Ben & Jerry's!) then there's some banter from Jian regarding the people in the periphery - either they're too scared to move up or have a need to stay by the bar! into - - - The People at The Bar ditty - into - - Psychedelic Jam in Winooski (with the people at the periphery/bar remaining at the bar!) - - A bit of a 'Whip It' improv - - Tears of a Clown - into - - Heatseeker Boy some banter - 'Whanking' jokes, etc. (it was dark in there, I couldn't get it all down!) - - Sad Girl - - Lazy Boy - - Kick in The Ass banter regarding how beautiful Vermont is, especially at 'Leaf-Peeper' time! - - Pisco a bit of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' - - Boo Time: Hey Winooski Have a Brewski Nice Place 2 Ski Mrs. Beardsley Higher Groundin' Buds Aboundin' How's It Soundin'? Where's My Exedrin? (Thanx to Kelsey for getting Mike's set-list :) !) - - Michigan Militia banter regarding if Vermont were to move to California - similar mindsets, etc. Also, one can smell the pot at the first toll both into Vermont! (on a personal note, the route we generally take to Vermont has no tollbooth, but we always take the same route!), although the lads are not suggesting anyone investigate the area - especially the young'uns there. - - Present Tense Tureen - - Johnny Sauce'n Rght about here Jian has waved at the (periphery) bar folk & they have waved back - although not moved too far forward! Now some Thornhill banter & (sidle up to the - hey big boy - what if it's a girl, etc.!) into some lighting banter & Murray thriving in the shadows (i think my notes are tough to read!), and a bit more of the 'hey big boy! Here there is the announcement that it's Casual Friday (although Dave didn't get the memo!) and apologies for being SO relaxed! Jian realizes that they don't really need to play music! (banter is ok!) - - I Will Hold On - - My Poor Generation some Elian banter - into - - - King of Spain - - Green Eggs & Ham - - My Baby Loves A Bunch of Authors - - Get In The Car (which my friend, Donna, really liked) - - Psycho Killer - at which point the lads exit! Encore 1: re-enter & the audience sings Happy Birthday to Jian! Jian says someone has baked him a wonderful cake & all are welcome to partake - first come, first served - providing they can eat with fingers! - into - - a Live Together ditty - into - - Disco Bargainville! Encore 2: - - the Billy Jean into Love Me, Love Me back to Billy Jean back to Love Me (some banter - i can't read my own writing - it was after all written in the dark!) - ending with - - - The Drinking Song They finished up at 1:10 a.m.-ish! It was a terrific show & Sara, Kelsey & I (mostly Sara) had a wonderful conversation with Jian. Of course, before the show started, we got to chat a bit with Dave & Murray (who excused Kelsey & my absence from Appel Farm due to a Girl Scout camping trip!) We met a wonder magician who just moved to the Burlington area - his name is Great Scott (if you need a magician for a show - let us know, we have his info! - he travels - ) All in all it was a GREAT evening - even after all the driving! Our weekend (Sara, Kelsey & Me) continued to be very busy - visiting with our friend, Donna, and the girl she mentors (big-sister's) - we did the Farmer's Market near Church Street in Burlington, played mini-golf (at an indoor mini-golf center 'Pizza Put'), and just generally catching up! (a P.S. here to Great Scott the Magician - look into the Pizza Put for a place to perform - or try Church Street!) I hope this satisfies the thirst to know about the show - it was definitely 'Casual Friday' and well worth the trip! Any questions? Let me know!
