If you can't find music, it's a very luty (as in lute music), singsongy, simple melody, which, if you listen to other Elizabethan (that's a mouthful) music, say from any other Shakespeare comedies, you can probably get the gist enough for an non-music class. Or listen to the music in Monty Pithon & the Holy Grail, which is the same sort, only funnier. In fact, when faced with a bizarre assignment such as this, humor may be your best approach! He opened for Fruvous at the Birchmre, before Martina Sorbera, and he absolutely blew me away! It was the first time I have ever run out and bought a CD by the opening act!!! His songs are great and funny and he has got so much stage presence .. he is a perfect Fruvous opener. OTOH, and I know I will probably tick people off here, am I the only person who WASN"T that impressed with Martina Sorbera??? On the good side she was very cute (and defintely played up the "I'm so cute" thing") and had some nice songs. But I thought all of her songs sounded exactly alike in tempo, feel, etc. which got really old after two nights of her as opening act, and maybe it was the acoustics but I couldn't understand much of what she said either night I saw her. Obviously I must be in the distinct minority in this opinion, since Jian is producing her album and so many people thought she was wonderful ... but I was frankly underwhelmed. Kevin So on the other hand I thought was terrific and would wholeheartedly recommend to any Fruheads who haven't seen him ... Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on all counts there. I only saw her once (in Providence) but basically her music just struck me as generic girl-with-guitar-and/or-piano stuff, which I can take or leave. Usually leave. Her lyrics might change all they, they might be the most brilliant in the world - but I couldn't understand a *word* of what she sang. Neither could my mom, who has better hearing and more experience trying to decipher people at concerts. :] I have to say, though, her cover of "House of the Rising Sun" was really quite cool. Thanks to Luella, our awesome tour guide, we didn’t get lost and saw some really cool places. Definite highlights: the bookstore/café where we ate lunch (good, good food, peeps!) and chillin in the park. Comment from Anna concerning the people running: something along the lines of “Can I lie on you so I can loose weight osmosifically?” Yup, my thoughts exactly. On our way back to the car, we were consumed in the search for the materials to complete Jian’s birthday presents. Still, no luck. I felt like we were under great pressure considering that we had only one more day to finish the job. After going to all the mom and pop stores, we resorted to the one place we all knew would have the needed supplies to get the job done right: Wal-Mart. 6.7.2k~House of Blues~Cambridge, Mass I was supposed to have met up with my girl, Amanda, around 2am Wednesday morning at our hotel, but she never showed. I was getting concerned while the crowd in HOB got bigger and bigger, with no sign of Amanda. We ended up front row stage Murray/Jian because people got to the Dave side before us. It was ok. I had been on the Murray/Jian side before. I dealt. J I would give you the setlist for this night, but I left Jian’s setlist in the hotel and hopefully Anna or Mindy picked it up for me. I don’t know what I’m gonna do if it is gone for ever… Plus, I can’t remember the banter either. Hopefully the girls will help me out by sharing their memories with all of us. What I can tell you is that I, yes, Amy, took part in the emphasizations during Present Tense Tureen. Let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it sounds. I couldn’t sign along because I was concentrating so hard on locating every instance where I needed to say ‘pot’ and ‘bowl.’ Plus, it should be noted that Murray introduced the song as a story about a bowl containing a small amount of a substance known as pot. So, we can safely say that this is what these guys may be singing about. Ten seconds before midnight, we did a countdown to Anna’s 21st birthday. This countdown coincided very nicely with the beginnings of Get in the Car. So cool. And, after the song, the guys wished Anna a happy birthday. I’m sure that made her night. The entire concert we were ghetto-fied once again and dancing and stuff. Murray was very amused with us, I must say. And, I’ll have to admit that chillin Murside is definitely cool with me. I’d do it again… after I get the girls on Daveside again, of course. After the show, I went on a search for Amanda. I still couldn’t find her. After doing a sweep of the bar (which I had no idea why she would be there since she doesn’t drink, but I had to check just in case), I started to head for the bathroom to see if she was in there. Then, I practically ran into her. And man, has she grown up in the month since I saw her. She’s drop dead gorgeous, y’all. Ok, so I think I’m embarrassing her, so I’ll leave it at that. This time I bought myself a copy of the C album and yes, all the guys came out. So cool. They all signed my cd and I was happy. J We left at the wee hours of the night/morning again and headed for home. But wait, Amanda and her friend, Melissa, needed to run an “errand,” so I went with them. We got lost finding the store and got lost trying to get back to the hotel. We finally got there at 4am and crashed. ~amy Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 03:19:22 GMT From: sisterpuff@my-deja.com Subject: Pre-HOB review...if you want to read it... So, going straight into the reviews for House of Blues just doesn’t seem to be right… It would be cheating all of us that took part in the adventure of traveling to Cambridge if I just skipped over the stories… On Sunday, I flew from Tampa, Florida (flight left at 6:15am, mind you… got up at 3am so I could make it to the airport) to Washington, DC where Anna was to meet me. The only thing is that she and the rest of the crew over slept, so they got there after my flight landed. There I am in Dulles waiting around for them when I hear my name attempting to be announced on the PA system. My name is followed by some kind of instructions or something, but I can’t figure out where I am supposed to go. The second time the chick says my name, I can decipher “lower level,” so that’s where I go. I finally meet up with Anna, Mindy, and Deb…I have no hearing and Mindy lost her voice…ya, we were a sad bunch. We piled into Anna’s clean car and head up to Baltimore. It was a fun drive…we were all kinda on the edgy side because it was hard to decipher how to act around each other considering this was the first time we all really talked with each other after the FruCon incident (let’s just leave it there…we all apologized and now we’re really cool friends). But plenty of stories were shared back and forth—Früvous and non-Früvous related. When we got to Anna’s place, we all started to play with her kitten, Napolean. Such a cute kitten! Anna taught it to stick her head in Anna’s mouth and I seem to have a comfy chest cause that’s where Napolean fell asleep a couple of times. J That’s an entirely different story. After a while, with Deb’s hints to needing to go out and get food, I made the call for a trip to Philadelphia. See, my godmother lives up there and I told her we would try to visit her. We all piled into the car, grabbed some fast food, and were on the road in no time. Key phrase from that day: “Amy, you’re not as mean as I though you were.” Thanks, Deb. Everyone thinks that I’m mean, but I’m really not. J We got into Philly and chilled there for a bit. Had a couple run-ins with people that we know…so weird seeing them in Philly of all places! Tee hee. So, we get to my godmother’s place. She and her husband opened their doors to this crazy group of four young ladies…they’re used to having boys in the house, so I’m sure that we freaked them out a bit. They bought us pizza and tried to figure out the crazy mess of what can be considered the way we all met. I’m sure they’re still trying to figure out what Fruvous and Fruhead and all that stuff means. On Monday, we got up, took showers (which Anna fell in love with the bathroom…), and went shopping for five hours too many at Franklin Mills. We bought clothes and Jian’s birthday presents, so it’s all good. We set out for Deb’s place in NYC. More fun in the car. At Deb’s, we had dinner then left to get the needed supplies to out Jian’s present together, but didn’t get so far. Oh well, we figured. We’ll just have to get the stuff in Boston. We crashed and then left for Boston on Tuesday morning…after, of course, finding out about the setlist for the “Fru-B-Q”…whatever…we were a little bitter, but we moved on. Shoot, we were about to spend three days in Boston, seeing the lads every day. After a drive that took forever, sans Deb, we finally got to the hotel. We had just enough time to shower before heading out for the House of Blues…enter the reviews of the shows and our further adventures in Wakefield/Peabody/Cambridge/Boston. We did run out to Wal-mart and found our needed supplies. Jian’s present would be finished and ready for him before the show! Yay! Our mission was done! “What were his presents?” you may ask… Well, we got him a red shirt that says, “I’m Just A Guy” on the front and “Ghomeshi” on the back. Aw yeah. It’s totally sexxy. Also, we bought him a bunch of Brintey Spears stuff to keep him entermused for a time during his touring. We met up with an old family friend of mine and had dinner that the House of Blues. He even paid for all of us…which he just met Mindy, Anna, Amanda, and Melissa. Such a cool guy. Oh, it should be mentioned that yes, we did get lost only because he was so into making fun of Mindy, Anna, and myself in the car ride over to HOB. Mindy and Anna totally dug him. J 6.8.2k We were a little concerned as to how we were to get Amanda into the show. See, she’s 18 years old and that night you had to be 21+ to get in. The thing is that they were checking IDs outside the doors and we told them that she was coming in to eat dinner. Which was totally true. But, when we walked upstairs for the show, they didn’t check for IDs or anything. Easy in. We did try to convince Al (my friend) to come to the show with us, and he was intrigued considering it was fold music (his mom used to sing in a folk band), but he had to get up early the next morning for work. I’m sending him a cd to try and hook him that way. So, the show. Fortunately for all of you I do have a setlist for this night and here it is: “Porno” River Valley Splatter, Splatter Spiderman Misplaced I Love My Boss Ash Hash “Lady” Boo Time Jockey Full of Bourbon Bittersweet~for Anna’s birthday from Murray, sung by Murray and Dave only Homeward Bound~sung by Mike on lead and Jian Michigan Militia Johnny Saucep’n The Kid’s Song Fly My Poor Generation King of Spain/Green Eggs and Ham Disco Video Bargainville Believe Drinking Song There was barely any banter during this night until about mid-way through. Right when Murray was going to sing Bittersweet for Anna, this guy walked up on the stage, cake and candle in hand for Jian. It was midnight and Anna’s birthday was officially over and Jian’s had begun. Murray was like, well this was for Anna’s birthday, but well, Happy Birthday, Jian. This was such a beautiful version of Bittersweet. I literally teared up so I know that Anna was definitely touched. Following this awesome performance came Mike and Jian singing Simon and Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound. Could it get any better than this? During Michigan Militia, we turned the “Happy Birthday Tricia” to “Happy Birthday Anna” and then to “Happy Birthday Jian.” At the break in Green Eggs and Ham Mike outperformed himself yet again. I swear, I’m beginning to look forward to this song just so I can see/hear what Mike will do next. When it came time to see what Dave’s wrongful assault on the Beatles did to Mike, Mike started to play the Phantom of the Opera then went into singing music from another broadway show…I believe it was Les Miserables…yes, it was. He was singing his version of Red and Black. It was great. After the show, we hung around yet again. We had given Jian the shirt prior to the show in hopes that he would wear it during the show. He did have it on but then took it off according to him, due to advice given to him by Murray. He came right up to us and thanked us for the shirt. He said he would definitely be wearing it to a show. So, be on the lookout for it and send me pics! I wanna see what it looks like on him! We gave him the other presents and he took them…but didn’t open them. He let them sit on the bar while he talked with the other people that were there. The group of us just hung around or whatever. Anna was merrily enjoying her happy 21st buzz. J After a bit, the bartender was trying to give away Jian’s presents, so I took them. Jian came looking for them a bit after that. We told him to open them and after a little of persuasion, he did. He was totally psyched over the presents. J And, Amanda gave him one of her Starbucks smocks with free coupons for a Starbucks drink. You know he liked that present. J He put the smock on and I took a picture. Aw yeah. We left after that and yes, got lost on the way home. We got back to the hotel at 3:30am…with half an hour to spare for me to pack and get ready for the airport shuttle. It was picking me up at 4am so I could make my 6:15am flight home. Needless to say I didn’t get any sleep that night. And, I forgot a lot of stuff in the hotel room—including Jian’s setlist from Wednesday night and my C album (don’t worry, Jodapuff! I gots yours!). Well, that’s all for me for a bit. Whenever I get the other setlist, I’ll post it on the newsgroup so y’all can have it. Later taters I’m off to see Mickey Mouse tomorrow, so I have to get some shut eye. After driving around forever, we got lost. I was in the driver seat basically because I beat Anna to it. I was doing pretty good with the driving thing. Then, we pulled over to ask some guys how to get to the House of Blues when we heard a ca-chunk-type sound. I had kinda run over this sign that had fallen over and landed on the ground. When we pulled away, it turns out the sign said “No Parking.” Hahahaha. Well, we finally made it to the House of Blues and went inside to see what was going on. Anna and Mindy met up with their friend, Matt, who is pretty cool, kinda quiet, so I really can’t relay any stories or anything. We grabbed a table and ordered an appetizer and some drinks. After a bit, Matt sited Luella (I was a little busy paying attention to the guys walking through the door…what else is new?). She came over and sat with us. She’s chills. At 9:00 we decided to head upstairs and chill in the bathroom until they started to let people in…well, turns out that 9:00 was the time doors opened. Go figure. The actual concert venue of the House of Blues is tight and tite. I can definitely see why there were only 200 tickets available. For those of you that weren’t there (and it’s safe to say almost all of you weren’t there since we didn’t see ya), the stage is on one side of the narrow hall and the bar is on the other. You enter by walking up stairs, coming onto the bar. The bathrooms and access to the “upstairs area” (aka, where the bands hang out and the sound booth) are behind the bar. Basically, if you stood anywhere in the front or second rows, you were stage Murray/Jian/Mike/Dave. It was that small. Plus, it was pretty warm in there. By my awesome powers of persuasion and wonderful smile, I convinced Mindy, Anna, Matt, and Luella to stand “stage Dave.” They ever knew what hit them. J But that’s for later. Anyways, so we chill there. The bouncer guy, Sheppey, danced with Anna for a bit and shtuff. Martina Sorbora opened all three nights. I have to say that the more I hear her, the more I like her. By Thursday night I was really digging her music. Plus, I totally agree with her about Britney Spears—she definitely isn’t saving herself for marriage. When the lads came on, we were all ready for a great concert and that’s just what they gave us. I can’t remember the setlist, but it was totally fun. Oh, I should mention that the concert did not run on Früvous time at all. There was like 30 minutes between getting there/Martina playing/Früvous’s set. I feel like I got spoiled with that. The three of us danced the entire night. I had been breaking out my ghetto talk that Jordan has so thankfully influenced and then I got to break out my ghetto dancing. Aw yeah. Anyways, so I think I’ll share the banter that I can remember: Oh, I have to mention the fact that practically everything said had been included in a conversation that the group of us had had previous to the shows… ~At the beginning, they ragged on Dave Matthews Band and Phish. Total issues there. ~During the intro to Disco Bargainville, everyone was calling out numbers other than 2…causing there to be three attempts to the song. After the third attempt, a “Roger” chant began. Which caused Jian to totally freak out. Something about him loosing control and feeling like he was on Jerry springer. Haha ~Best banter/improv of the night: Dave began talking about how this company was no longer sponsoring them and hence no more guitar strings. Dave said he was going to write them a bad letter. Then, the guys started to sing a song about it. Murray, being the awesome guy that he is, starts to list letters…and evil face with every letter said. When he ran out of “bad” letters, he was like, “good letters” but could only come up with one: A. Could that be A for Anna? Amy? We may never know the truth… ~It was announced that Mike is leaving the band in a couple of weeks, rendering the other three helpless without a band name. Mike had the rights to the name Moxy Früvous. In fact, Murray could no longer use his name because he sold the rights to the name Murray Foster to Mike. ~Bad incident, good reaction: This guy at the beginning of the show had his hand raised throughout the opening song, so Jian was wondering if he had a question or anything. With that, the guy asked if they played any good songs. Everyone booed him and Jian called him a dick to our loud burst of applause in support. ~There was a jam on the Jewish song, “Hava Nagila.” Forgive me for the spelling…Anna spelt it for me and I’m Catholic. So, please, all corrections should be sent to Anna since she’s the one that would benefit from this more than I would. The girls really liked stage Dave and looked forward to chillin there the next night. As Luella put it, “It gave me a whole new perspective.” Alright! More points for stage Dave! After the concert, we hung around in hopes of talking with one of the lads…figuring it would be Jian. I bought Jordan her copy of the C album cause I promised her I would get all four guys to sign it…my game plan was to try my hardest all three nights. Well, that mission was completed on the first night. All the guys hung out afterwards. It was so cool. I talked with all the guys. I was definitely impressed that Jian remembered my name since I have been referred to as “Jordan’s posse” on many occasions. Sorry, Jian, if you’re reading this…but, I was just really surprised that you remembered my name. It’s a good thing. We left at some late/early time and got lost on our way back to the hotel. Driving around the Boston area isn’t all it’s cracked up to be… especially when there aren’t any street signs to lead us. ~amy Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V4 #257 ********************************************
