He opened for Früvous in Syracuse a while back and recently was touring with Ani DiFranco in California in April. Point of the story, on May 24 he was involved in a major car accident while driving to perform a show in Pittsburgh. Check out his website (www.hamellontrial.com) for updates and information on benefits shows in the coming months to help offset medical costs. Syracuse New Times, May 31: A day after informing The New Times about a planned July 7 gig at Happy Endings Cake and Coffeehouse, songwriter and former [Syracuse suburb] Eastwood resident Ed Hamell suffered severe injuries in a May 24 auto accident. While driving to a concert in Pittsburgh, Hamell's car went off the road and rolled over. He sustained a head injury, a swollen spinal cord, three broken vertebrae, a broken left rib and a cut to his elbow, according to Hamell's wife, Linda. "It was very scary," she reported from a waiting room at Hershey Medical Center. "He was about six hours away. It's been very difficult." She got good news after the first 24 hours, however, when doctors informed her that Hamell should completely recover from his injuries. "He's in the intensive care unit, but he is showing very rapid recovery," she said. One thing is certain: Ed's wonderful bald head won't look the same. "He's got about 52 staples on the top of his head. They weren't worried about the head injuries, because they did a CAT scan and there was no brain damage." A helicopter transported Hamell from the accident site to the hospital. As amazing as it sounds, Hamell didn't lose consciousness immediately after the accident. "He remembers being cut out of the car," Linda Hamell said. He also recollected what happened before the accident. "Apparently, he was in the right lane on {Interstate} 81 South, and he recalls that a white van was trying to pass and cut him off. I don't even know if they were able to find the driver of that vehicle." Leave it to Hamell on Trial to keep his priorities in line even in the midst of disaster. "Even seven hours after the injury, he wanted to know if his guitars were OK," his wife said. (The guitars survived the crash without any damage.) While out of the proverbial woods, Hamell still has at least three months of physical therapy before he fully recovers from the trauma. To wish him well, send cards and goodies to: SuchAPunch Media, P.O. Box 2452, Middletown 10940. Shakespeare! Well, it's the time of year where high schoolers undergo major stress because all their teachers give huge final projects in addition to studying for exams. So anyways, I'm supposed to be playing William Shakespeare in performing arts from a play called Shakespeare: Through the Stages (a chick Shakespeare..) and there's a song. I can't sing. But what would make it even easier is if I knew the tune. I have absolutely no clue about it, and I was wondering if maybe among all you English majors, and music fans, and Shakespeare people if anyone might be able to tell me anything about this song. All I know is that it's from As You Like It or something. For all I know it's not a real song, and that it starts 'It was a lover and his lass with a hey and a ho and a hey nonino that o'er the green cornfield did pass, in springtime the only pretty ringtime. When birds do sing, hey ding ading ding, sweet lover's love in the spring.' If anyone maybe could tell me of a website or a book or anything that may have a wav file, a midi file, sheet music, or any sort of clue at all as to how the song goes it would be much appreciated. However, I'm disappointed because I didn't get to see Jian and Murray open their card! *sob* I wonder what they thought of it? Anybody have any idea? Thanks! you should have no trouble finding a tune for this piece, because there have more written than either of us could possibly imagine. my advice would be, however, if you want to do something really interesting, is to write your own, or have a friend write one for you. this is much more in the spirit of things than just borrowing someone else's interpretation, and you'd have something to take with you from the project. :) melinda ------------------------------ Date: 05 Jun 2000 23:16:14 GMT From: spychicr@aol.compoot (Rai- the Pootmeister ) Subject: Re: yes, i was just wearing a scarf <> Okay, I just took my bandana off my head and tried that and I have one question: Are you, like, 40 lbs? --Rai --It's my Moo bandana. Other good books/authors I like are (in no particular order): Douglas Adams - 'nuff said Madeline L'Engle - "Wrinkle In Time" Series - a bit juvanille, but I find that I still like reading them sometimes. Frank Herbert- Dune Series - classic science fiction Jane Auel - Clan of the Cave Bear series - as Stephen King says in Bag of Bones "You mean the sex with the cavemen series?" It's more then that, but yeah, there's a bit of hanky panky in there. C.S. Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia - good fantasy series Agatha Cristie - good mysteries. I prefer Inspector Poirot to Mrs. Marple, though. Roger Zelazny - Princes of Amber series - another good science fiction series Individual books: Stephen King - Bag of Bones - this is good if you don't want straight horror. It's a ghost story that also ties romance in there. Daniel Keyes - Flowers for Algernon - very good book commenting on the trend medical science is/might be taking. Adoulous Huxley - Brave New World - Same theme as George Orwell's 1984, but a much more accurate prediction then his. Karen Cushman - Catherine Called Birdy - might be a bit juvanile, but very good. There are 2 other books by her that are also fabulous. Paul Zindel - The Pig Man and Me - very interesting book...good though. Well, if anyone else has suggested any of these, I haven't been paying much attention to the thread. And if these aren't exactly what you were looking for, oh well. I think the Arrow-Huss train on the Knoebels Whirwind was the best train I've had the pleasure to sit in. The seats were at the right height and the shoulder pads were comfortable. The Viper's train were well known to pinch my shoulders, making the whole ride a painful ordeal for me. When I rode the Viper on May 21st (Dave, you should have waited a day, the weather was much better! ) I thought the ride had gotten a bit "clunky". The shuffling was bad. > and if you don't know what you are looking for, the entrance is > really hard to find. The exit is easy; it's right next to the lift > hill, adjacent to the ride. The entrance is up the hill, tucked away > between two joints and partly hidden by the UFO queue house. Uh.. No. You're WAAAAY off on that one. The UFO is across from the Viper. The only ride that is right next to Viper is the Huss Ranger, which is right next to the exit of Viper. UFO and "Rodeo Roundup" (Swing Around" are next to each other, separated by a food joint. Oddly enough, the entrance to the UFO is right next to an ice-cream stand. But the UFO is about 100 feet from the Viper itself. While the Viper entrance isn't that easy to find if you don't pay attention carefully, all you have to do is remember that it's right underneath the loop. Sure, the sign for the Viper is a dark brown wooden sign with dark orange letterings, and surrounded by pine trees. It kind of makes the entrance "camoflauged" (sic?). Other notes: I'm glad they're finally fixing the Mack Sea Storm Ride. In the past, half of the boats were roped off becuase they won't turn around. It was pathetic, so it was nice to see that it's getting the overhaul it deserves. It's a very delightful ride, and appeals to a wide range of people, both old and young. The Wave Swinger. Yeah, the ride rotating has been going on for quite a few years. Looks like the hydraulic control valves have gotten a bit worn, particularly with the drive for the lifting tower. The lifting tower (the center column that rotates opposite of the ride's rotation is attached to the lifting tower) rotates while the ride is loading, so I guess the maintennace compenstated it by running the drive motor for the ring where the seats are attached to. They didn't get the compenstation right, so the ring turns very slowly while the lifting tower turns about half it's normal speed. I noticed that there's some kind of a foot pedal that acts as a brake for the ride and when the operator presses the pedal, the lifting tower does not rotate. As soon as the operator takes his/her foot off the pedal, the tower starts to rotate. The ride runs great, and a bit fast. Just need to fix the valving so that the lifting tower doesn't rotate while loading and unloading. One thing I will NEVER forgive Darien Lake for: Removing the Crazy Quilt (25 car Calyspo ride. Not sure if it's Mack or Swartzkopf, I could have swore that the severely weathered manufacturer's plate on the operator's booth said "Huss".)! It ran beautifully the year before. It used to be where the Wave Swinger now sits. Where the Wave Swinger sat before is where the Looney Tune Emporium store is now.
