'b' was not commercially released by Warner until the band sold out its original order. Don't be surprised if there is a BLR/True North stamp on the CD even if it's only being handed out by the band right now. It's not a major release so the record companies don't want to waste money promoting it. But more to the point, I think (I might be wrong) that someone (Dan?) got board patch at the Amherst show on Dec 3, '99. No? Greg, if you want to talk to great tapers, I recommend Chad Maloney, Dan Godwin, Nate Derose, Jason Reiser and Josh Woodward, to name a few. I'm sure they can speak up for themselves, but what else do I have to do on a Thursday afternoon? Oh right. Yes, Cal (the sound man) has allowed board patches in the past. I think it depends mostly on the type of board at the venue. If it's easy for you to patch out without getting in his way too much, he's usually okay with it. And of course if that falls through, the band is usually open to audience taping, so long as you ask first and do not profit from the recording. jordan In article <8g016g$5d7$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, gusterfan@my-deja.com wrote: >As you may have guessed, I'm not a group regular, and I'm truly sorry >if this is bad etiquette or a much discussed thread... [...] >I'm going to be at the Darien Lake show on Saturday and I was just >wondering if a fellow taper could fill me in on the band's board access >policy?? The taping policy itself is rather simple - they allow personal taping for non-commercial use. There's never been anything official addressing board taping. Generally speaking, it's up to Cal. If he's busy, I generally avoid asking. If you can catch him before the show, it won't hurt much to make the request. If the board looks like something unusual or crappy, he'll generally suggest that you just run your mics, or find someone for a patch. Board tapes can be nice, but if the board sounds like poo, don't even bother. >I checked the website and the faq said to come early and ask fellow >tapers... so i thought i'd get a head start and ask here!! Always good advice. I suggest asking other tapers particularly at smaller venues because there's a good chance that someone else has already inquired about board taping. This way Cal doesn't have to tell several people that he can't accomodate board feeds because xyz. >In the lists, I see a lot of SB&MAT shows, so I'm presuming access >might be available?? If so, what do the sound guys prefer re: >connections and etiquette?? Bring everything. If you've got RCA, 1/4", XLR, and an attenuator in the -12 to - -20 dB range, you should be covered. >I'll be taping using MD and Core Sound mics (or hopefully BA), I can >digitally transfer MD to CD-R and I'd be happy to spin a CD-R copy or >two if anyone wants one. I assume this is an outdoor event - probably with a pretty nice PA setup from what you generally see at theme parks. You might be better off just running the CSBs to be honest. It might also be difficult to get a board feed at a place like this since the board is often a bit more isolated from the audience.
