We decided we're gonna try to make it up to NoHo tomorrow, despite our lack of fundage. should be interesting. If anyone wants to donate to our "buy tickets instead of sitting outside the club" fund... hehee, feel free *grin* Tonight's show was amazing. After a very, very weird day (ok, nothing can beat the weirdness of my trip to NJ but it was still very odd)... running into some of my old friends from high school, seeing an amazing a capella group perform at the Bowery Mission, and basically doing other odd stuff that only happens to me in the city... Amy and I decided to head up to Irving Plaza. Ok, so I live no more than 9 blocks from the venue but we managed to get soaked on the way over. The rain was pretty bad and the wind made it so bad that you just couldn't use an umbrella without it getting torn apart (not that i ever do - NYC was not made with umbrella's in mind!!). Doors weren't for another half an hour so we decided to go get some tea in the cafe across the street and wait for our buds to show up. We see them standing in line about 20 minutes later and basically chill in this cafe for quite some time. We saw the line start to move and decided to head over to IP. We got in to the club well after everyone else but because we had no desire to check our stuff we just went straight upstairs and staked out some awesome spots stage-dave. Sarah Harmer took the stage soon thereafter and despite the fact that she played the same set as last night - something was different. I was thoroughly impressed by tonight's set. wow. I'm not sure what it was but I seriously got into the vibe. Which is cool because there are very, very few female singers that i dig these days. Go Sarah. Seeking Homer. What can I say for these hometown boys other than that they are amazing. Being the only American band playing tonight they did an awesome rendition of the star spangled banner and uhm yeah, i'm still proud to be an american... lalalaaa! If anyone is around on May 5th - go check 'em out at the free show at the seaport! We had fruvirgins with us and after these guys finished playing they turned to us and asked, "ok, whoever the headlining band is - has some major standards to live up to now." and that they did... but from the first song that fruvous played, she realized that they were going to have no problem whatsoever in doing so. I'm not sure what that first song was (something new, and something cool) but it was totally rockin. The show just got better from there. I don't have a setlist or anything but I'll just outline a few of the highlights. There was more Murray banter which led into another Murray song tonight... which was cool. But it got super-duper-alice-cooper cool when Jian started singing Run DMC's "It's Tricky." Oh yeah baby. Growing up in the hood of denver (and yes, it does exist) I'd have to say that Run DMC was one of my fave bands... yes laugh at me now if you must. If you ever get a chance to see Run DMC live - go for it. they're amazing, especially in the past two years. Just awesome. So all i gotta say is "Go Jian." *grin* Mike, during Minnie the Moocher made some crack about the Bloodhound Gang's new song... again, just going to plug the fact that my buds in this band called Nerf Herder are on tour with BHG right now - go check 'em out!! Throughout the entire show the lads had so much energy - that was really cool. They all looked good and I have to mention Dave's "Liz Claiborne" outfit. very nice. Also throughout the show were the hecklers (as always) and jian just seemed to be getting love from all the guys in the audience - not to mention the thirteen year old girls next to us screaming "WE LOVE YOUR PANTS JIAN" and then snickering to each other "Can we get in 'em?" hahaa. The final highlight of the evening was Mike during green eggs and ham. "look at what you did to him!" to which he took a seat on stage and rocked himself back and forth while nibbling on a pear/apple which I believe he called a "naranja" later on *grin* Anyways, he started speaking in spanish and that was just too funny. When they moved on - Mike crawled back to the rear of the stage - it was nice. OH OH OH!!! the *REAL* highlight of the evening for me - they sang Kick in the Ass... which was teh first time I ever got to hear it live. I was souped cause that was the song that initially got me liking the lads. Before Ash Hash, Jian started talking about the fact that you should avoid X and other drugs (they are rold models after all and need to get the message out there) rather, go for the hash - it's easier to hide. There was some banter about Britney Spears being the real thing and Christinia aguillera (sp?) being nothing but fake. She'd be the Tonya Harding of the music industry... Finally, after the show ended - the house lights come on and music starts playing... only it's Fruvous... and it's a pretty damn nice recording of "disco bargainville" so we got a bit of a C album teaser tonight. very nice. :D Allright, sorry this review blew the fatty... I've got two research/term papers to write tonight/before tomorrow night's show... oh yeah, i gotta love the end of the semester - what a way to spend a friday night *sigh* ah well, fruvous made it excellent :) take it easy, JOrdaN http://www.geocities.com/tmbgirl.geo/ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 06:44:32 GMT From: jewelee@my-deja.com Subject: Re: 4/20 frushow story (damn funny). Is that true? If that's the case, perhaps there's a very twisted way to view this whole debate: Canadians only know about American affairs because they were "forced" to. (to anyone rolling their eyes right now - just hear me out!) I'd also like to throw in the fact that perhaps the media feels "forced" to talk about American affairs there as well. I'm not sure why... but I've got a hunch. I was sent an email that was "why I'm proud to be Canadian" and one of the numerous reasons listed was "there are fewer murders in Canada in a year, than there are in New York City in a week." It's kind of like everytime my friends and I would drive 10 hours away from Denver to some weird cities in Wyoming and we would find ourselves watching the Denver newscasts on TV despite the fact that we were *so* far away. Why? Simply because there was very little news - at least not the bullshit type of "story making" news - going on in these little towns in no-man's land, and Denver at least had that going for them. Where was I? I'm making these connections in my head and I'm not sure if i'm piecing them together for you guys, so basically... Americans are too busy trying to learn every little detail about US History in HS (come on you all know that panic feeling you got right before the AP exams because you had only completed the country's history through the first half of your textbook and you knew the exam was covering contemporary history too!) to even bother with anything else. I can't really answer why that is - I know that I wasn't interested in a lot of what I was learning, but I was interested in getting high marks on the exam. In addition to that, at least at my ghetto-public HS back home - the only other history course offered was "European." Who do we blame for the fact that Americans don't know sheeeit about their neighbors? the kids in these schools who just never had the opportunity to be exposed to this information in school, through the news, etc. This is the first year I'm going to be able to vote and I'm, needless to say, thoroughly disheartened (is that even a word?) with the whole situation. I've sat around and waited 18 years, anxiously awaiting the past 10 years, to be able to do so and now I just sit back and think "this is it? this is what I'm dealing with?" Hahaa, i'm getting way off my point right now sooo.... The truth of the entire matter, in my very humble (ha) opinion is that "everybody knows the world is full of stupid people" and America just got stuck with the ignorant ones too. Don't get me wrong, I am a product of the US and I'm throwing myself in that category as well. There's just so many people out there that could care less about what's going on in the world unless it's scandalous (need I mention monica lewinsky?) or a complete farce. That was probably the most interest the US president has had from some characters in a looooooong time. The last time I heard about a scandal in Canada or Mexico? i couldn't quite recall. point made. *grin* Oh yeah and real quick to all the people with "Anti-American" sentiments. Reminding us that you all don't want to be Americans... I hear ya. But why then, is Americanization taking place all over the world at such a rapid pace if that's the case? Allright, I'm just randomly ranting here... i was really planning on defending the US in this post and hehee it just didn't happen. i just ended up sounding like every other stupid politician in the US - and I'm frightened now. take it easy, JordAN http://www.geocities.com/tmbgirl.geo/ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: 22 Apr 2000 15:11:45 GMT From: gordonlew@aol.com (Gordon Nash) Subject: Ticket for Pawling Wanted Does anyone have an extra ticket for the Towne Crier show in Pawling? Day two of the Moxy Fruvous weekend is over! Woohoo! Ok, so i guess I shouldn't be excited about that...because that means I only have one more day and then have to return to Virginia... After a day of walking around in the rain, getting totally drenched, then chillin in Jordan's pad, we head for Irving Palace. The walk over there was like walking through a wind tunnel, let me tell ya. Craziness...by the time we got to IP, I was soaked yet again and the hair definitely needed to be pulled back. Jordan and I chilled in a cafe after talking briefly with Jill (pretty cool pants she had on, I must say). Robbie came and joined us and he's a pretty cool guy. I love Jordan's friends! I guess that makes me part of her "posse" (which even though I typed that, I am still in denial). So, we head inside and get great spots stage Dave. People were making shadow puppets on the screen...ya. That was fun. So, Robbie's friends join us and we had fru-virgins! Yay! Sarah Harmer rocked. Same set, but I think the fact that we were all standing and stuff made it better so we could dance and stuff (as compared to Mays Landing). I enjoyed her. Seeking Homer. Ok, these guys are "sex on a stick" to quote Jordan. They were totally awesome. Definitely what we needed to get us going. I could tell that I was going to loose my voice last night (I am kinda sick, by the way...so my voice is almost gone anyway). They remind me of Dave Matthews and this other band that I can't quite remember. I want to say Everything or the Pat McGee Band...but I'm not too sure since both those bands are not at all like eachother. Anyways, they rocked my world. Fruvous came on... Jian had on jeans and sneakers, which is totally different from what I'm used to seeing him in. It was a pleasant change in a way. Dave's suit was awesome. And, taking a closer look, brought out the blue in his eyes. Very beautiful, if he doesn't mind my saying. So, the first song was great. I'll be very happy if I could find out the name of the song and if it's on the C album. Jian told everyone the story about his new hat and where he found it. He said that they were practicing in their rehearsal space last week in Toronto. The rehearsal space is actually a piano repair spot that is filled with just about anything and they are constantly discovering new things. Anyway, so Jian finds this hat and thinks that it's cool and decides to take it. Then, Dave comes in and starts singing "Persian Cowboy" to the tune of...something Jordan and I can't remember...it was funny, though. So, ya. The hat. I don't know about you, but it doesn't look like any of the cowboy hats I've seen. But, whatever. If Jian likes it, then that's fine with me. During Michigan Militia, a string on Dave's banjo broke and he looked like he was going to pull it off, but then after a bit of trying took it off and handed it to Toby in the wings. He then ran around the stage and eventually picked up a guitar and started playing that. Suddenly, Michi turned into a metal band song. Made it sound sooo different. Dave rocks. Even though the sound of the song changed, he compensated the loss of the banjo with the electric guitar. Is this yet anothe example of why we all love this bald headed man? I know it's why I do. :-) I Will Hold On was played in a new way. Murray and Mike exited the stage, and I was like, huh? where are they going? Jian and Dave were left to sing...no instruments except for the guitar. Beautiful but different. I liked it. Kinda made me think of what Fruvous would be like on MTV unplugged, if that program still came on... So, yet another night of pleasant surprises coming from Fruvous. We'll be seeing them tonight in NoHo! This'll be Jordan's first trip to Massachusetts and my second. Yippy! So, we're headed out now and we'll see you there! Amy oh, and by the way, we're the two sex on a stick girls, so come and say hi. ;-) Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: 22 Apr 2000 16:55:55 GMT From: loudsioux@aol.com (Loud Sioux) Subject: Re: Americanism again < In addition to that, at least at my ghetto-public HS back home - the only < other history course offered was "European." Well, that's a step up form when I was in HS and we had a course called "World History" which was basically European history, but essentially implied that the rest of the world was insignificant and that the history of countries and people in Asia and Africa were irrelevant to us in the "Civilized" world. Fortunately, we had both intelligent, knowledgeable teachers and students who, being of Asian and African descent, rejected this assumption as best we could. Yes, they had to slog through the curriculum and yes we all wanted to get good grades (it was a public school, but with only a college prep curriculum, A.P. and all that jump through the hoops mentality, too.) But the teachers expanded and elaborated, when possible and the students demanded, and got in some cases, minor subjects like Afro-American studies. And it's not so much ignorance, cause in real life you can and should look it up if someone points out something that you don't know, it arrogance that caused other "Americans" that's right, people form N. & S. America, to view us with distaste and even distain. I mean, when I was in Toronto, it took thought to remember to say I'm from "The States" or the U.S. not America, we all think like that and won't change unless we make a consious effort. Of course, it's easy to snipe at us if you're Canadian, just like it was easy to be a Democrat during the scourge of Reganomics and the Bush aftermath, and snipe and piss and moan, but that didn't solve any national problems and blaming the U.S. alone won't solve any international problems. [Although I must admit, I like the sniping so much that I never did exchange my $60. Canadian after I returned form Toronto. I think of it as escape $$$ in case Baby Bush gets elected and drags the nonlusterous gov. of PA along with him. Hey, Canadians, name that Gov. no, really, I'm form PA so I know what a mealymouthed schmuck he is. He managed to single-handedly insult a foreign country while still a state gov. and drive away a multi mil $$$ deal to keep shipbuilding in Phila. Thanks to Philly's then mayor Ed Rendell, another deal was found and closed, averting disaster for many Philadelphians and the city's economy. Unfortunately, Gov. guess who got to bask in the glory --- and that's politics, friends! Wait, what NG is this? Oh, yeah, Fruheads, wow, I got carried away, there. So, yeah, weren't those 1st 2 concerts great! Well, the camera people in Mays Landing were a bit annoying, but funny:-) I kept trying to keep out of range and I think a babbled something about not filming me 'cause I'm in the witness protection program, which they didn't seem to hear, but a few people in the aisles near where I was rambling looked at a mite funny. Like maybe they wished I'd go witness someplace else. So, sorry to anyone who's way I may have gotten in while dancing. I try to take that into account, when seeking a small spot in which to twirl, but these things hap. don't hesitate to tip me off if I need to move in the future, folks, but please try to remember that we all have feelings, even the weird among us, and at least among Fruvous fans we should try to give each other the benefit of the doubt. Well, I'm done, except for one thing. Why, someone (sorry, my screen won't click back for a reference, cause I'm barely computer literate) asked why is the rest of the world becoming "Americanized" so rapidly? Well, let's just look at how it works here. My neighborhood pharmacy was bought out by Rite Aid, because they made him an offer he would be an idiot to refuse, running so close to bankrupcy as he was. And they didn't replace it with a pharmacy, they let the building stand unused for over a year, just to get rid of some competition. But don't take my word for it, ask Bill Gates, he knows quite a few tricks of "persuasion" and "salesmanship". That's pretty much how it's done, no popular up welling of demand for crappy fast food and shoddily made goods that profit U.S. compaines but manufacture these products where labor is cheap (read kids and mothers with kids) and governments (like in South America) make deforestation and strip mining, etc. possible in ways they couldn't get away with here. Yeah, it sure was a great concert. The only thing that really pissed me off was that they keep changing form the Beatles to the Eagles and it just messes with my head and my feeling of elite insiderness. And, thanks a heap, guys, cause now they're probably *never* going to end with The Drinking Song" again. And that Gulf War Song is so political, I just don't know! And it is true that the camera guys left before the political banter began, but I don't remember any reprise of the Elian humor of the previous night, do I? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 15:24:28 GMT From: Kate Bunting Subject: Fwd: [Re: Moxy Fruvous World] This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------NetAddressPart-00--=_VPoK4016S0v1ccc0ce1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable This is the response I got from Bravo, when I emailed them a similar requ= est to one that was posted here shortly ago... Now she's gone back to bed (and giving me dirty looks for typing away) and it's my turn to say something... I really don't know where all of this will go...and I'm definitely not an expert on this subject, being a senior PSYC major that took one poli sci course, sleeping through every class, and getting a B just because I memorized everything in the book. Ok, so this just proves how passive of an American I am. I guess point one was just made. :-) First, the American arrogance thing kinda got to me. We should all be proud that we're in America. Just last night Seeking Homer got the crowd riled up about being the only American band and playing the Star Spangled Banner and stuff. We are all partiotic about our country. Fruvous takes pride in being Canadian. My friend Atasi takes pride in being Indian. We are all proud of our nationality. If people don't like being Americans and think being Canadian is better, I say go to Canada and live it up. Now, I'm not saying that I think you shouldn't be here. Stay here. Do whatever you want. It's America...a free country. Anyway, so ya the news is geared towards American news. Basically because that's where we are and plenty of stuff happens here. But it depends on where you live what kind of news you get, on the local news, mind you. I live in Hicksville (ok, if you want to get techincal...Harrisonburg, VA) and our local news is really, really bad. Nothing ever happens there. Not a damn thing. And so nobody watches it because it's basically community event listings and stuff. People want to hear about the sensational stories. This entire Elian Gonzalez thing is sooo old, but it's something to report about. Wherever the kid goes, I feel bad for him. This past year or however long it has been has been traumatic for the kid. Every move he makes he's been on camera. Just the other day he put his hand through his fence and this guy is yanking on it. Elian tried to pull it away, but the jerk wouldn't let go until a few moments later. And who was pulling on his arm? A newsman. We all go for this sensational stories and the news reflects it. The newsman was trying to get just that much closer to the "news" than everyone else so his station would get better coverage. Hmph. Where am I going? I guess that just proves that America is all about being on top. The news stations are trying to get the ratings. But, isn't that the American dream? We are all trying to be as successful as possible. Why do we go to college? Sure, to get a higher education, but those diplomas get us better paying jobs and hopefully a better life. We want to be better. America tries to make itself better in comparison to other countries. Americans are just flippin competitive jerks if that's how you want to put it. We want to one up other countries. ...ok, so I just thought about Jordan's mentioning of having to take courses in American history in comparison to Canadians taking American/Canadian history. So, I took AP history and AP government in high school. AP history was a joke in my school. My teacher was a crazy man. And, by the time the AP exams came around, we were up to WWII (by the way, the Civil War through WWI was taught in one class setting, about an hour's length of time). There was sooo much information that we had to learn on our own. Courses down here have so much US history in them that it's hard to pull in from other countries. Anyway, then in AP government, the first half of the year was spent covering American government and the second half was spent covering governments of other countries. We studied the Mexican government but not the Canadian government. Sadly, I don't remember anything that was covered in that class. Again, yes, I am a passive American. I don't know what point I am trying to make here. Alls I'm saying is that America isn't all that bad. I can't name all the presidents that we've had in chronoligical order or list off all the state capitals, but I can recall most of them. And, I do not know who the senators of Virginia are (Allen is the governor, though!). This does not make me any less of a person. I guess I'm just proving Jian's point here...but I'm not too sure what his point was since I wasn't there to hear it. Ugh. I don't know what I'm saying. All I know is that putting aside all the materialism and capitalism in this country, I'm damn proud to be living here. I've lived in 5 states now and each one is different in its own way. The home of the free...we can all be different. Uhm, so ya. I think I'm just going to leave this now. Because I've totally lost track... thanks amy Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V4 #193 ********************************************
