Fiona is woman-of-the-hour for being at Kathedral friday nite and alerting us this evening to the signs she saw advertising tonight's one-off. Glad to see the band in a more relaxed setting and able to try out some new stuff in front of such a receptive Kathedral audience. NOTE TO BAND: puhLEASE do a series of shows here!!! (maybe for Frucon4?) The atmosphere, ambience and crowd really made this one of the most enjoyable frushows we've seen in TO in quite awhile (though the Trinity St. Paul show in Dec. is still pretty hard to beat!!) CELEBS SPOTTED: Bruce McCulloch!!! plus Carla Collins (w/out husband), and ex-Blue Rodeo music mojo Bob Wiseman. hKath,MC,Nafs & I got there around 830pm after a quick bite at Pita Pit, and eventually a familiar pilliar of fortitude walked out onstage after about half an hour of waiting: MURRAY: Indoor Fireworks MIKE: Dangling Participle a really odd new song; part Tom Waits, part Tom Lehrer. Different. Challenging. Cool. JIAN: I Will Hold On never heard this done solo-acoustically before. still sounds great, although a bit more... dark. DAVE: Night Boat To Cairo [w/ guest Richard Underhill on the sax solos] a Madness cover. REALLY well-done we were then subjected to about a 20-30 minute intermission, while getting to hear some cuts from the fabulous new Violent Femmes' "Freak Magnet". (buy this CD!!) before finally... Half As Much Starman impromptu: Rebel Rebel / Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) [Murray: "David Bowie must be rolling in his grave."] You Can't Be Too Careful "Math Rock" - really lengthy rambling improv after an overlong discussion about the Alan Parsons Project and elaborate stage-decorations. Present Tense Tureen Johnny Saucep'n I Love My Boss Pisco Bandito Horse Trundle - another new one on me; has this been done before? this tune kicks so much ass; the best song Neil Young never wrote. Minnie The Moocher ["On sound we've got Cal, who's dressed all in flannel / and he does it like they do on the Discovery Channel"] Pork Tenderloin Disco Bargainville Splatter Splatter !!!!!Entropy!!!!! - ->River Valley Get In The Car Psycho Killer [w/ plugs for new CD, the upcoming "get some go again" (???) tour, and told to sign the mailing list for the Spring newsletter being mailed soon] - ----- Michy - ----- King->Green Get Some Go Again [ah *now* it makes sense] - ----- I Got You, Babe [tease] Believe ["from our upcoming CD, ' the Cher album'" ] after the show we met up with Bill & Sandra Donnel (w/ offspring) from Buffalo and went back for more Pita's. (you guys better come to Falconrdige!!!) Please email me or MC if anyone taped this! (i never bother to tape anymore as someone else usually is.) while not being one of my favorite shows (the Luxor Hotel or NoHo '98 probably has that honor) it was still great to see the band at top-form in such a relaxed, intimate setting, and such a cool venue too. ~mikewood - ---------- "Everybody in leather!" ------------------------------ Date: 02 Apr 2000 07:17:22 GMT From: gordonlew@aol.com (Gordon Nash) Subject: Re: OT: Batnoses > >Cara bravely suggested: > >>Well....I guess we could start a discussion on who would win in a fight >>between Batman and Spiderman to keep it realtively on topic! :) > >Oh, come now, isn't it obvious? Three (more) (annoying? ) questions regarding the Irving Plaza show*: 1) If my parents are just going to hang around, not necessarily watch the show, do they still need tix? 2) Is it possible to just go in & out, in between the lounge, etc., and the show without any problems (i.e., once you're in the lounge, can you go back into the show)? 3) Once I get in, probably with a friend or two, do my parents need to be around us all the time, or are we OK to be off on our own? *My friends and I are under 16- the minimum age for getting into Irving Plaza w/o a guardian, of course. I *really* want to start an a capella group in my school, and with less than 49 days left to my school year after a huge drama production and the like (and less than that until our choruses' spring concerts), I was wondering whether any of you knew any good a capella songs? I figured if I was going to ask around anywhere, AMMF would be the place to do it... : c ) We're a bunch of 8th/9th graders, mostly, but we do semi-high school level stuff (or jr. high all-state chorus level); my advisor is strongly leaning towards making it an all female group, so any songs with a strong baritone/bass line is definately out (but we could probably handle most tenor parts). I have 4 or 5 of them and I'm not even sure. And it's not OAS[1], it's OAC. It is > somewhat like AP. For more information, check out http://www.ibo.org. or rather than wade through all that - it's a two year intensive program (plus two years of pre-IB, which makes it span the entire High School career). An IB student takes exams in each of their classes at the conclusion of their four years that are similar to AP exams, except they are typically harder[1] and you are required to take exams in all courses - not just the ones you choose. You also write an extended essay/thesis paper, and must complete 500 hours of community service within your four years of school... Once you take the exams and your papers have been evaluated - if you scored high enough you get an "IB diploma" which at some colleges can be accepted as credit for an entire years worth of a liberal arts education. Most schools, however, don't even recognize its existence - thus you work your ass off in high school merely so that you can get to college and not have to worry about a thing other than "which of my papers from high school can i turn in for this assignment?" *grin* maybe i'm forgetting something. take it easy, JOrdaN http://www.geocities.com/tmbgirl.geo [1]For example, you take Chemistry for two years in IB. However, at my school it was required to take the AP exam after your first year - in that, you're taking it after having only learned 1/2 of the material. I got a 5 (out of 5) on the AP exam... then a year later, after having studied another year's worth of chem... i got a 6 (out of 7) on the IB exam.
