It was a very...peculiar show. Hippos kicked MAJOR ASS, as usual, playing all the rocknroll hits they're known for. However, the crowd wasnt really into it (more on the crowd later). They were really good, plus, they had some random new drummer who was doing stick twirls and various other craziness on the set. They were followed by Luscious Jackson, who, for all intents and purposes, played the same song for an hour. I have to give them credit for trying though. They remind me of somebody's cool english teacher or something like that; you know, the still-kind-of-young one, who you can tell has been around the block a couple of times, goes out for cigarrette breaks between classes and keeps getting hit on by the gym teacher. Whatever, thats just what they remind me of. Not too dope in concert however. Then SmashMouth took the stage, to regale us with their mastery of pop hits. They were good, you know, jump up and down and whatnot. But other than that, nothing to write home about. Not to say it wasnt a fun evening, but that PECULIARNESS was inescapeable. I refuse to complain about the $10 tickets, but the corporate sponsorship that was responsible for that resulted in omnipresent Yahoo! and Doritos logos. I dont even like Doritos. Plus, the crowd was an odd, odd, ODD mixture of past-it old people (like moms and dads and shit), and painfully young kids. Aside from being constantly reminded of how I'm not much taller than these 11 year-olds, it was bizarre to see these youths rocking out, doing everything from random, spazz/tard gyrations, to some surprisingly accurate R. Kelly backup dancer moves. And the old people were all shaking around and shit too! What the dilly, yo? But as we left, I realized that in the end, it was a cool thing for these kids to be able to see a rock show of any kind (especially if they got there in time for the Hippos), seeing that when I was dumb youthful, there werent concerts that my parents could take me to. Thats the moral of the day. At least they're being exposed to SOME kind of music, as opposed to just monotonous mainstream TV or N64. Maybe some of them will grow up and continue to like music, or even start a band of their own. While I'd never go to another show where the gradeschooler/old people ratio was so high, its still an awesome thing in itself.
