Oh, this is an easy one. My first concert (that is a non-classical concert, I'm assuming, 'cause I grew up with those) was They Might Be Giants at The Roseland in November of '96. It was great except that it was standing room and I had a broken ankle which I did not yet know was broken, so I was in quite a bit of pain by the end of the night. I've been going to concerts by local artists for, like, all my life, but thanks to overprotective parents/lack of a car, I don't think I got to a concert by an artist known outside Maryland until I saw Dar Williams in '97, on her End of the Summer Tour, with Peter Mulvey opening. Wow, that was such an awesome show. Carey, actually kinda glad that her parents saved her from having to admit something like, "First concert: Milli Vanilli." :P ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: 11 Mar 2000 18:01:00 GMT From: michykith@aol.com (Michykith) Subject: Re: OT Re: How about *First* Concerts?? >>But what was your first concert? All right, like Joni, I was going to concerts all my life--my dad's a drummer. I was packed up on weekends for gigs way before I could walk. My first big "arena" show was this weird reunion tour thing with like Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Herman's Hermits, and of course, the Monkees. (Chrissy, were you there?) But this thread tangents nicely into a personal rant, and almost on-topic too. My dad played (sang) his first gig many years ago at a little coffeeshop called "The Red Star Cafe" (which happens to be right around the corner from where I live now). Recently the Red Star closed... it was such a Cleveland landmark (and we don't have many)... because there was too much competition. Like Jian (or jianish), I'm personally holding the Starbucks that moved in right behind it (In an old bank building... it's so weird) personally responsible. That whole big business vs. Independently owned thing. Bastards. And their coffee's bad, folks, c'mon! Anyway, there's your little dose of way too much info about my life for the week. ciao, donna ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 19:38:14 GMT From: ctyner@my-deja.com (Adam Tyner) Subject: Re: OT Re: How about *First* Concerts?? I can't resist the bait... my first concert was Herman's Hermits, but I fell in love with their opening act, if you can believe it, The Rolling Stones; their "maiden" U.S. tour. Unlike the Beatles at that time, you could actually hear *some* of the music being played and sung. It was a huge screaming, crying, mass of hysterical, hormone-ravaged teenie-boppers (and their parents in most cases) - what a blast! And shortly after that, I saw Bob Dylan at the Academy of Music in Philly, shortly after he went electric and shocked the folk music world out of their panties. This was also courtesy of my mother who also discovered the Beatles for me while my head was still firmly stuck with the old fogies like Pete Seeger & Woodie Guthrie & that acoustic stuff. I was so close to Dylan, I could have walked up a few rows and touched him, not an opportunity many people had even shortly after that. Which is why I love seeing MF at places like Lee's Palace and even the Keswick. We better enjoy the intimacy while it lasts, cause as soon as they make it big, as we all say we hope for them, it will be E-Centers and other such big arenas and that's when I start looking for new, undiscovered bands, but with many regrets! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 04:59:44 GMT From: Lori Martin Subject: Re: OT Re: How about *First* Concerts??(+Rant/Starbucks) > But this thread tangents nicely into a personal rant, and almost on-topic too.
