Well, I honestly wouldn't mind at all going to Maryland if I could be in the Honors program. However, despite being President of my youth group, President of the Archaeology Club, Webmaster for the school newspaper, Photo Editor for the paper, as well as a slew of other things, being in IB (the International Bacculaureate Program[me]) screwed me up. The classes are so hard that my unweighted GPA is about 3.47, and UMD Admissions is too shallow to look beyond the GPA and at the courses taken. I got into Scholars, but have been most unimpressed with what I've seen of the program. I went to the Open House, and ran into a friend of mine (what the are chances of that with 30k people on campus!?) and he told me that he had a lot of friends in Scholars and they were all dissatisfied with it. For example, I got 8 hours of credit in psych (with only a 6 on the IB HL exam) whereas the most credit the school gives for people taking "AP" exams is 4 hours. sooo... i dunno, in the long run, they did realize that IB in high school is a helluva a lot harder/different than AP exams. (in a nut shell - do well on your exams and you're set). On top of that - IB prepares you so much better for the transition from HS-->college. My classes now are a total breeze compared to what I was doing in IB :) take it easy, special J!
