Notes from the wedding night of Rick Rockwell and Darva Conger: Dear Diary, I did it! I married a multimillionaire! At least, I think he's a multimillionaire. Wait -- what am I saying? They'd never let him go on TV without checking him out, would they? Oh, diary, he's such a dreamboat -- and so down-to-earth. Though Rick and I have only known each other three hours, it seems like three days! Know what he said in the limousine on the way to the airport? ``Have another tequila, babe. Fox is comping everything.'' God, you could've knocked me over with a feather! Dear Brandi, I haven't stopped thinking about you since last night. That was the most incredible bachelor party -- I still don't know how you managed to fit yourself, a unicycle and two Burmese pythons into the cake! Did you see me on TV tonight? I told you I was filthy rich. So much for your wisecrack about my tux being a rental. Listen, hon, I don't have much time -- the new missus is in the shower. How about we hook up when I get back to town? Please? I can't stand the thought of going through life with only a sequined tassel to remember you by.... Dear Diary, Here I am in the nuptial bed, awaiting my new husband. I'm so nervous! He must be nervous, too, because he keeps calling me ``Darma.'' Oh, diary, I did something naughty. Rick accidentally left his Merrill Lynch portfolio inside his briefcase, so I picked the lock with a hairpin and snuck a peek: $373.22! I was about to freak when I realized he's probably one of those ``eccentric'' multimillionaires who keeps all his serious money in secret Swiss bank accounts. Silly me! Dear Britney, Guess where I am? Sitting in the john of a five-star hotel room, with my gorgeous new bride waiting for me in the sack! Ha, now I bet you're sorry you didn't respond to all my e-mails, Miss Nubile Teen Pop Star! Hey, Brit, I don't suppose you happened to catch me getting hitched on the tube? Well, babe, 17 million viewers did. We're talking h-o-t. Dear Diary, You should see what I'm wearing! Rick's eyeballs are gonna pop, if he ever comes out of the darn bathroom. Meanwhile, I couldn't help notice that his tuxedo is a rental. Heck, the receipt was sitting right there in his pocket with a bunch of other papers, including a ``certificate of authenticity'' from something called the International Zirconium Association. Hmmmmm. Dear Jennifer, or is it still `Ms. Lopez-Rodman'? Guess where I am? Sitting in the john of a five-star hotel room, with my gorgeous new bride waiting for me in the sack! Ha, now I bet you're sorry you didn't respond to all my e-mails, Miss Big-Time Latin Crossover Singing Sensation! Dear Diary, I'm getting worried. Rick's been in there for nearly two hours. Maybe it was all those crab cakes he ate at the reception. Or maybe he's just got the opening night jitters. Well, I'd better go check to make sure my dreamy new husband is all right.... Dear Mariah, Guess where I am? Sitting in the john of a five-star hotel room, with my gorgeous new -- whoops.... Dear Diary, I married a dork! Help! Get me outta here! My Dear Darling Darma/Darva, I don't blame you for being hacked off, but remember that you will always be my one and only love. I can explain those silly postcards to other women, sweetheart, just like I'm pretty sure I can explain those brokerage statements. True, we've only known each other since 8:45 p.m. But look at it this way: If we were moths, these few brief hours we've spent together would be an entire lifetime. So be my moth, sweetheart. Come out of the closet and come to bed. And, if you wouldn't mind, bring the unicycle. Signed, Your devoted multimillionaire husband, Rick." If you think about it, the weather in TO was pretty decent last weekend. It was warmer than at Frucon II, by a lot. The only thing about the whole weekend I would liked to have changed is the bowling, meaning it would have been good for it to happen. It's great! Quick take - eclectic? laid back? thoughtful? I don't know how to describe it, but the guys were very "on", musically tight, very unforced yet very effective. Hmmm - see my comment at the beginning of this note about not making sense. The audience was there to listen as well. A few places where well lubricated fans shouted out during the expected long pauses in b-ville (when judging if the "TWO" was lound enough to continue, for example, also during Boss). Well handled by the band - was not a problem as the show went on, very little talking during the quiet songs - at least, very good for a bar. Mike, J and Mur came out afterwards. Were able to wander the bar and talk to folks in a more relaxed manner then I've seen lately - that is, people gave them space. Thats more than a quick setlist! Yep, "Nowhere Man" is a Beatle's cover, from their album Rubber Soul. I wasn't sure I'd really like it all that much for some reason, but it made a great opener. There were two groups: Presbyterians(that's us!) and the Methodists. Now, for some reason, the Methodists just kinda disappeared for a while, and us Presby's were looking for something to do. I had promised my friend Meredith some Früdiscs to borrow, as I just have a feeling that she'll like them a lot. We started playing cards, and I threw in YWGTTM. Had to skip Kick due to chaperone's presence, and by the time the disc was over the Methodists were re-appearing. Next up was Bargainville, which we got through without any complaints. I had YWGTTM in for a SECOND time and was maybe half-way through(don't remember) when this girl shouts "Can we put some _good_ music in? What _is_ this stuff?" So guess what she put in.. 98°[1]. I'm not kidding. I was very tempted to ask "Wait, since when does a boy band count as good music?" but I held my tongue(also a good idea because I was playing Mao at the time); she wasn't in a very good mood, for reasons beyond my knowledge.[2] About 5 minutes later, the chaperone (whom I've known since I was very very young, but rarely see these days) asked "Hey, Neil, what were we listening to before this?" So I handed her the CDs and she pointed at YWGTTM as the one that she'd really liked. She(get this!) wrote down info about the CD and seemed geniunely interested in getting it for herself!!!! Then when another lady showed up she wanted me to put Früvous back on the stereo, so she could hear it! I was just grinnin'... Neil [1] -- THis was followed by Lou Bega, LFO, and BNL's "Stunt"(tolerable) but it's funny: even the owners of the CDs couldn't listen to most of those songs all the way through.
