I was so happy to hear Down from Above again, but thought that Michigan Militia stuck there in the middle of a Wood opening was a little strange. Half as Much as an encore was.... a little strange. I guess it seemed a little weird to build up that energy and then go into the Drinking Song... there was a bit in the middle where they played a part of a song by the opener, which I found interesting, especially since it was the song by the opener that I remembered and really liked... The silly voices and the harmonies were really great. and Murray whistling the accordion part was great! Although I can certainly see many reasons why it's sooooooo not a concert song - besides the limited political relevance, that is. it must be about 5 minutes long. Mike said afterwards something like "We've only played one song? It feels like we've been up here for an hour!" they then spoke of a video they made that pretty much no one has seen, and played The Ballad of Cedric Fruvous. Some talk of wishing they had a piano in the room, and going right into Entropy (with great guitar playing by Dave), giving me big hopes that we might also get to hear Jenny Washington, the other 'b' song they never play... then they played the most incredible version of Misplaced I've ever heard. Jian and Dave playing acoustic guitars. It was nice, not overloaded with instruments, and I had a very hard time maintaining my composure during it. (not that I'm bitter :) and they then introduced the Naive Young Chap and played Harbourmall, which was great (and I'd never heard in any form before...) and the raffle happened and I didn't win anything, but lots of people did, and we hate them... no, wait, we don't hate them. I wouldn't carry a grudge about it. They're all going to enjoy what they got a lot - lots of cool stuff was given away. (I can't be too bitter or jealous, since I actually *bought* an Indie Tape - and no, it wasn't the one-of-a-kind hand drawn one) Thanks to everyone who made it possible and enjoyable. is it February, 2001 yet? :) - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "You knew it was true, when I held you, there were no secrets. Gord's Gold was done for a shouted out request (supposedly). I'd write more (I already know I forgot to include stuff in the other reviews, like the "3 boss types" from Thursday, or that I Will Hold On seemed to have some backing vocals in it on Friday... things like that :) but I'm operating on about 12 hours of sleep in the last 3 days, most of which was had on Thursday night... so I'm going to go to sleep, and other people can fill in the details of whatever I left out. :) - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "You knew it was true, when I held you, there were no secrets. I accepted this fact, and was okay with it, seeing as how the weekend fell over President's Weekend, making it more possible for me to go. As luck (and an even luckier deal I struck with my mother) would have it, I was given permission to go, so long as I paid for it myself, as I had promised. I was ecstatic. My ecstaticism was given a near-fatal wound on Friday night when, as I walked in the door, my mother informed me in a sad deadpan voice: "Your flight's cancelled." My ecstaticism was smacked down for good the next day when I spent 6 hours at the airport trying to get on a flight with no luck. About a month and a half ago, it was very quietly (I didn't find out for a while) announced that the Sunday Fruvous and Friends for Choice-the reason for the weekend!-show had been cancelled. [Suggestion begins here] So, to the suggestion part, I say, if there's no F&FFC show, why have this wonderful festivity during the most snow-prone weekend of the winter?!? No thanks to the weather, I am seriously considering dropping out of the community for a while because this unfortunate turn of events has seriously upset me. I'm not blaming anyone, I'm just commenting on the poor choice of weekend weather-wise. I say to you Frucon Committee people (who I would have been next year, had I been able to get to Toronto earlier this weekend), for the love of God, if there's no F&FFC show, don't make the Con during the most unpredictable weather-wise month. Keep your weather-screwed fans sane, ok? I'll get off this soapbox now. Thank you all for reading this far. - -J writing a song called the Ballad of Jill V. Thank > you all for reading this > far. > -J Well, the date of the convention isn't based solely on the F&FFC concert, but on the fact that they play three concerts in the same weekend and they're all in their hometown. Planning the Con based on one specific concert is not a particularly good idea, especially when that concert is a benefit of a political nature. For example, I myself did not attend the F&FFC concert the last two year, partly because I needed to get home for work on Monday, but mostly because I am pro-life and didn't wish to participate (not trying to open a can of worms here...this isn't the place for this debate:). Surely if Moxy played three concerts in July at Lee's or something, it would be reasonable to make THAT the Con weekend in the interest of weather. As far as this particular weekend, there was no way for the committee to know that a storm was going to hit, and the month or two notice that the F&FFC concert was cancelled wasn't enough to completely reorganize such a massive event...most people had already bought concert and airline tickets, put in for vacation time at work, and taken other measures in preparation. I am truly sorry that you were not able to attend. I hope that the weather and other events permit you to attend the next convention!
