They like stuff with multiple meanings. However, the conventional wisdom is that the Lazlo in Lazlo's career is John Shotwell their sound man prior to Cal, (actually prior to Trevor, prior to Cal but that is nitpicking). Lazlo is his "Nom de Son". He is a poet in his spare time and lives the sort of lifestyle that was very popular among youth of the late 60's. This info is addressed in the FAQ btw. Correction - the FAQ actually states that while Lazlo is the nickname of John Shotwell, it is not the Lazlo in the song. And I quoteth from the FAQ: "Lazlo the Soundman is said NOT to be the Lazlo from "Lazlo's Career", and that that Lazlo is a sprite that follows the Frubus around." So I believe the song is still open to interpretation. ALL the songs are ALWAYS open to interpretation. That is why they are so interesting. Nevertheless, if you know John, it seems to me to be pretty hard to deny that he is at least part of the inspiration for the song. For example, from the song (via FDC): You won't go back, it's where it's at, you gotta pat the man, the hat, an' that's a fact. John was never without his large red hat. It was his most salient feature (apart from the fragrance of Pot smoke that seemed to follow him around.) :) Frankly I don't believe there would have been a sprite named Lazlo anywhere near the frubus if Mr. Shotwell hadn't spent so much time there. But then that is MY interpretation.(1) A.J. (1) Chad, better modify the FAQ to state that A.J. doesn't buy the post-John spin control sprite stuff one bit.
