Example: "Of all Mary's wonderful qualities, my favorite is the simple moxie with which she confronts each new challenge in life." Moxie was the name of a fizzy, potently stimulating beverage, first introduced in Maine in 1876 and still sold today (see today's Cool Fact, linked below). By the 1920s, the word was used informally to describe guts, courage, and spunky nerve. How did the drink gets its name? One of the ingredients of the original Moxie (sold as a medical nerve tonic) was wintergreen, an herb known as moxie in those times. The word came from the Algonquin Indian root maski- (medicine). (Hey, >just kidding, but it was worth a shot.) > >--tc Tim, I know Champaign isn't usually like that. I guess my memories took hold of my emotions & I went off - It's just that this was one of the lamest crowds I've seen at any concert. And this is from a guy who played in a hardcore punk band and has seen seen shows of all genres up & down this country, Canada & Europe. What was with the people that night? To paraphrase Jian who said during the show, "Listen, when you get down to it, we're still just a folk band, so if you want to be assholes, go see fucking Primus". But no, I understand that Campaign is usally a nice place to see shows. I spent my youth (HS/college) driving to Champaign to see bands - some of the best concerts ever @ Trito's Uptown & Mabels. Moxy Fruvous & Champaign was a natural. Always the perfect city to see them in. Thanks to the boys @ The Web FM, Fruvous always felt at home there. They had magic playing in Champaign from the first show in the little bar next to The Web studio where they played for 12 - 15 people to the night @ Mabels when the Drinking Song was sung sans-mic from the balcony. I'm sure they left scratching their heads that night ("What the fuck happened to Champaign?" was something that I'm sure 1 of the 4 said.) Sure I hope it was a 1 time occurance - a blast of air from the IN/MO contingent....perhaps..maybe..who knows...just kidding..maybe. Sad thing is though I probably won't make the 4 hour drive again to find out. Next time I drive 4 hours to see Moxy it'll be Minneapolis. One thing I'll miss though - Stuffed spinach pizza from Papa Dells on Green Street. One of the best pies in the world. Anyway, there was a big school-wide celebration/awards ceremony/lunch thingy today, and one of my friends won a beanie frog as a door prize. She was walking around all afternoon trying to figure out what to name it, and finally -- with no encouragement from me, really -- she decided to name him Fruvous! So all through choir she was thrusting him in people's faces and going, "Look! It's Fruvous the Frog!" One of my friends mentioned that she had been listening to DVN's song "Fish Sticks" on the way to school, and she still had it in her head. So, to explain to everybody else what we were on about, three of us went into this very enthusiastic medley of three or four DVN songs. One of the other handbell girls is a huge a cappella fan, so we then set about trying to convince her to check them out. At first she thought she had never heard of them, but then it turned out that she had seen them at a concert at College Park or something last year, loved them, but never found out their name. So she's going to check out their webpage and get their CDs! Whoo-hoo! Of course, I couldn't stop there, and I had to say, "Well, if you liked DVN, you should probably check out Moxy Fruvous, too . . ." My friend Pressly (read about him in various mass mails at http://demon.ceh.servtech.com/Mass/index.html if you so desire...) fell in love with this fish/hat I had in my computer room, back in August. I'd purchased the thing at FAO Schwarz last Valentine's Eve, but it fell out of favor with me cuz the eyes started to fall off. Anyways, it's this heavy paper thing that usually sits in shape of a big ol' fish, but stretches out to be a hat. He thought it was really cool. In return for computer aid, he received the fish/hat. A few weeks ago, he & I started trading Zip disks filled wiht MP3s... I included Pisco Bandito on one, and he LOVES the song. So we randomly sing it. TOday, as part of spirit week, was flashback day. I flashed to mid-80s, while Pressly flashed back to late September, when he would run around with the fish, having it 'gnaw' on people. Well, first period English, I decided "That's not a fish/hat... It's Pisco Bandito!!!!!!!" which provided us glee all the day long. Pictures will appear soon.. don't worry.. Oh yes, and Pisco DID eat my wallet at one point today. He get his wish.....
