Where were you when John Lennon was killed??? I was sitting in Barselotti's (a bar on Main Street in Amherst) hanging with friends who were watching Monday Night Football ... the sound was down but one friend and I noticed the picture of him with the black border and both yelled "turn up the sound." Got pretty plastered that night (wasn't much of a drinker). What I recall best was a few days later there was a pre-planned few minutes of silence and I was sitting in my room meditating and my two "friends" came barging in singing "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again." But I've seen part of a Tall New Buildings video (an interviewer showed a clip of it one time, in some interview I saw) and it's hilarious. Murray, as far as I could tell, doesn't look that much different now, but Jian had this total '80s hair and was doing a very groovy little '80s dance (Murray: "He hasn't danced like that in a long time . . . John Lennon being shot I was 10 years old when John was killed out side of his NYC apartment. It was all over the New York news. My parents were pretty rattled. All I remember was crying alot since I loved the Beatles from an early age. I had seen Yellow Submarine and Help at least 5 or 6 times each on TV at that point and thought the Beatles were the best band ever besides the Monkees. The Challanger: I was in highschool and home sick with the Flu. Being home, I thought well there's nothing to do so I watch the shuttle launch. I saw it explode live on TV not just on the million repeats after it. I was stunned. The first thing I did was call a friend who was also home sick and asked her if she'd been watching. At that moment, I still couldn't believe what I'd seen. I think I watched the replays for the rest of the day. The Gulf War: I don't remeber where I was, but I was in college at the time. I do remember getting very scared at the beginning of the war that if it escalated thinking "will they revive the draft and could my friends drafted to go." OJ verdict: I was at work for a publishing company in Colorado while I was in art school. We all watched it this one woman's office. But with OJ, my best memory was of the bronco chase. It was baskeball play-off season and The Denver Nuggets were still in at that point. Instead of cutting to the chase full screen it was a corner video with the game still on behind. I think Denver was the only place where seeing the game was more important than OJ. My personal grief moment, Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead, death. It was my first day at a new job as a typesetter while I was doing my art degree in Colorado. I went out to lucnh to pick up some Taco Bell just up the road. I was all jazzed to hear Uncle John's Band on the radio. I love hearing the Dead on the radio. At this point, I hadn't heard the news. I'm in the drive-thru waiting still listening to the radio and this guy comes up to my car. He said I saw your bears in the car window, did you hear the news. What news I asked. He said Jerry died this morning. I was in shock. I didn't want to believe him. He wished me peace and love and left. Moments later the song ended and the DJ announced the same news and here I am sitting in the Taco Bell drive thru crying. The worst was having to go back to my first day on the job and not be able to talk to anyone. (I didn't like to advertise to new employees that I was a Deadhead.) It was the hardest first day of any job I've every had. Love and Peace, Anita "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile..." I've been waiting to get the 'OK' from my supervisor to get a couple days off for Frucon. All the while that I was patiently waiting, plane tickets from Denver to Toronto were a very reasonable $330. So last week she finally says OK, and guess what??? Plane tickets have skyrocketed to $530, where they still remain today. My point is, if that price doesn't fall fast, I will not be in Toronto come February 17. I am so bummed right now I can't even tell you! So I want to say 'hi' to all my friends now, but still hoping that I'll be there. Oh, and for all of you who know my sister Becky, she says to tell you 'hi' because she will unfortunately not be making it either, as she is too poor of a college student. So that's it.
