A music-related post?! Amazing. I was beginning to think this newsgroup was turning into alt.tv.nickelodeon. I know I'm usually the maharani of OT posts, but lately at least 80% of the posts on the ng are about early 1990s kid shows. That really seems excessive to me. Sorry. Pre-register now! 26 days and counting until Frücon 3! Here's a handy little checklist for those of you planning to attend: 1. ORDER A T-SHIRT - A great shirt is just so inspirational that doing this will automatically help you plan. Hurry on this one, because the deadline for Marianne and Brent to recieve your email is JAN 27. THAT'S THURSDAY, FOLKS. 2. PREREGISTER - WHY? Well for one thing, If we don't have at least 200 preregistrations by MONDAY FEBRUARY 7, there isn't going to be a con! We have to have SOME idea how many folks to plan for. And if nobody pre-registers, then we have to assume no one is coming. Furthermore, we can't guarantee you'll get in if you don't pre-register. We have more (and nicer!) space than last year but it's not unlimited. Considering the size of the venues Fruvous has been selling out lately, wouldn't you like to be sure you'll get in? Finally, the best part: If you preregister, you only have to pay CDN$12 to get in. That's right, you'll get a CDN$3 discount if you preregister. Think of the number of Smarties that will buy! Go to http://frucon3.tripod.com/ for pre-registration info. 3. BOOK A ROOM - Call the Colony Hotel in Toronto DURING THE DAY to book your room at the special rate of $109 CAD a night for single/double rooms. Mention that you are with "Frucon 3" or "Moxy Früvous". (ahem. Yeah, we're with the band ;) If the Colony is too expensive for your tastes, share with some friends! Or check out http://frucon3.tripod.com/ for some alternatives. REMINDER - the night staff at the Colony doesn't know about the special rate. Book during the day. DEADLINE TO GET THE SPECIAL FRUCON 3 RATE IS: MONDAY JAN 31st. Hotel phone number is 800-387-8687. 4. MAKE TRAVEL PLANS - Try http://www.fruhead.com for travel buddies, ask on amm-f, or IRC. Check out such sites as http://www.mapquest.com http://www.greyhound.com (or http://www.greyhound.ca) or your favourite airline. 5. Arrive happy, healthy and ready for a really good time on February 19th in Toronto! Oh yeah. Somewhere in there you might want to book tickets for the three Fruvous shows. If you really feel the need to see them again. Your call. (Go to http://www.leespalace.com/ for details and ticket info.) Your Frucon Committee Got questions? So as long as I'm "on topic" in a manner of speaking, I had one of my life's most embarrassing moments at a taping of "Livewire" in 1982 ... my husband's band was one of the guests (they had a Top 20 hit at the time, no he wasn't the leader or anything, just the cute keyboard player) and the topic was "The Voice" ... another guest was a woman named June Foray who is an incredible talent -- she did Natasha on Rocky and Bullwinkle and about a million other famous woman cartoon voices. So I'm sitting in the green room watching the taping with two other band members as well as a few folks we didn't recognize (that should have been the warning) and we started making fun of Ms. Foray's nose job (bad bad taste, tacky tacky tacky us). Well, of course, unrecognized people were her husband and daughter. Ouch!!! But lesson learned. The three of us wanted to die. Remember Fred Newman, the host? I think as long as people put that nice little OT warnings at the top, I for one have no problem with the glut of recent off-topic posts. In fact, I am finding many of them far more interesting and rewarding and enjoyable to read than some of the so-called "on-topic" posts (such as Fruvous dreams -- I remember a Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle story about the most boring thing in the world is listening to someone else's dreams). This of course is strictly a subjective opinion ... but I for one have had my little memory taste buds perked up by so many references to things from my past that I hadn't thought of in years. I love reading other peoples' recollections of favorite shows, etc., because so many of us have common bonds way back in our pasts. With no new album out to review or rehash, no new album COMING out to anticipate and no real tour actively going ton to read the set lists, there just isn't a whole lot of relevant Fru-content to post these days -- let's face it! So what is wrong with the folks that populate this board -- who have similar interests in so many cases anyway -- to find other topics to keep us amused in the meantime instead of really digging for the slightest shred of SOMETHING Fru-related to talk about? As long as we put the topic in the header, that leaves everyone free to just blip by what bores them and read what interests them. I think if we restrict the board to strictly Fru-content, especially at this time of year, it would be ... well ... really boring. So, I say, bring on those recipes (I have a great one for matzo ball soup), favorite TV shows from your past, favorite kids books, etc. ...
