If you are thinking of Bakka (the sci-fi bookstore), it has moved to Yonge & Wellesley (about a block or two north of Wellesley on the west side of Yonge) - definately walkable from Yonge & Dundas, if the weather is nice (if it's -40 (celsius) like today, I would suggest the subway, get off at Wellesley subway station). Great store if you want some sci-fi stuff. >The best childrens book store is about 5 blocks north of Eglinton on Yonge >St. again, the name escapes me. The name would be simply "The Children's Bookstore." at the corner of Yonge St. & St. Clement's Ave. Unfortunately those arriving for Frucon will be too late. It closes it's doors this weekend. More because of wanting to retire, than competition. There was a great article on it this weekend in the Saturday Star and everything that they have done for Children's literature in Canada. >All along Yonge st between college and bloor are amazing book stores, >mostly >resell stuff. I concur with this (all second-hand stores, as far I know). Especially try "Elliot's" (again at Yonge & Wellesley, north of Wellesley on the west side of Yonge) - knowledgable staff and a wealth of books. Sadly, for newer books, more of the independent's are gone in Toronto. At Yonge & Dundas, you're best bets are the chain stores - World's Biggest (okay, it's not a chain on it's own, but it is owned by Chapters), and there's a new Indigo in the Eaton Centre (and as a result, Smith's and Cole's, also in the Eaton Centre have good sale prices on new books). The band did a cover of this!" "What?!?!" "Really! I was in this pub called the James Joyce on Bloor in February of 1998 I think it was. Late February, yeah. The pub was cool, but anyways, the house musician guy was playing all these songs and right at the end of his set a whole bunch of completely inebriated youths pleaded with him to get up on stage and sing some song. He wouldn't let them borrow his guitar at all (and I wouldn't blame him), but those 10 or so drunks got up there and sang that song completely out of tune. Well, there were 3 cool people in their group that were smart enough to stay back at their tables and hide. Georgia, Bob, and Martha[1] I think their names were, but anyways, I hated that song." "WHAT?!?!?!" "Well, at first I hated it. But then I turned on my friend Jaqueline's drunk-to-english translator. It's her doctorate thesis in speech therapy. It uses the alcohol content of the airwaves being spewed from the mouths of drunken people to calculate the amount of drunkeness and activates a variable rate translation circuit to move their drunken vocal expressions into normal, everyday terms that we all can understand, nay even enjoy. It's a must for enjoying pubs on Friday night and for picking up chicks when you are totally blasted." "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!?" "It's really kinda simple. It operates on the assumption that the slurring of the voice and the modifcation of words and pauses to think in drunk people obeys a simple quadratic equation. It is an approximation, but it's a pretty accurate one. Once someone gets too drunk, it drops down to a cubic equation automatically since the calculation start taking too much time. Fourier transforms are a little too intensive for real time calculations. But the cubic equation still makes the drunk 80% understandable instead of 20%. Genius, I thought and I carry one around always. I thought that maybe she should modify it up a bit for translating enraged motorist-to-english too. You know, using modern laser technology detect the distance and how many windows there are between you and the person flipping you off or mooning you and activate a high powered microphone attached to the glass on your window to pick up what they are saying. Glass vibrates a lot and can carry sound better than air. That's why Natalie would put a glass up to the door and her ear up to the end of the glass to eavesdrop on Blair and Tootie in the Facts of Life. If my idea works, I think I'll give Kim Fields, Lisa Werner, and Mindy Cohen[2] some money. They probably need it a lot by now." "You're a loon.
