I noticed during Horseshoes that Jian seemed aware of this, and didn't seem quite sure whether he should cue us to chime in or not -- and as a result the crowd fell down on the job. :( Maybe there was a little intimidation at being at such a formal venue too -- again, there wasn't as much banter. (I think he's a whiny brat though). A long time ago, Brett tried out for the Canadian team, and he wasn't picked up, the US team however, welcomed him. Ever since then Brett has played for Team USA. I think that's admirable, as he is staying loyal to the team that accepted him. (Unlike Petr Nedved, who played for Czechoslovakia, and then Canada, and then the czech's again). At first, I was GLAD that I started a debate, but then..things went a bit haywire. My original post wasn't directed at anyone in particular, let me set that straight...It was an observation from someone who has been to about 6 or 7 shows and just noticed something. Also, it was a reaction to treatment that a dear friend of mine was receiving. So, MAYBE, in a way, it WAS directed not at someone but FOR someone... ALSO, Katrin is right, calling people"dearest" is just my style, no harm meant..i call everyone that. ALSO, I AM Mikey or Michael, whatever..From PA, not Toronto (I HAVE met Michael Wood from Toronto and he's a cool guy, wish people didn't mix us up as much..he's way cooler then I). I DO however think that people should feign equally among all 4 members, it's only fair : ) I think the "code of conduct" thing..or "ettiquite" or whatever it was being called, is a pile of horse poo. Let's have FUN..If someone is disturbing you at a show, ask politely for them to stop, or friggin MOVE...I mean, trust me, it's easier for you to move then for you to move a drunk. I think it's time that i just said "Let it die". It's DONE...Points were made, and then we veered from the road and lost all sense of direction. That's it for me... If you're an actor, you know what I mean. There's always the one character your eyes draw to because s/he has that certian spark, that certain something that just makes you look and go, "Wow." That's what made me a Jihead. When he's up on stage, it seems like he's alive, not hindering himself in any way. He's just being free. And he's loving it as well. The other guys are charismatic, of course, but Jian's energy seems to radiate farther than the other guy's. The person with the least amount of stage presence seems to be Dave. I know, you Mathesonites might rebute my position, but would you agree that he seems to be more conservative in his jumping around and getting involved then Jian would? A perfect example is when the guys were on Conan. When they showed Jian, he was always perky and happy, but Dave seemed to be a little more reserved than the others. Murray comes in a close second to Dave. Murray seems to have presence, but his character doesn't always clearly develop. What makes his character (meaning the one he plays while onstage) stronger than Dave's his constant wit. He's always saying something funny. Mike has a ton of presence, but he is more quiet when it comes to not-singing. During the talking portions (usually where Jian and Murray have good conversations), Mike seems to be more silent. If they're singing an improv, he usually takes a big part. I'm guessing it's the music that gives him that presence. But Jian seems to naturally take to the stage. If he ever has the chance, he should do something for the stage or TV or something. Anyway, to get to my point: all of us teenage Jiheads ARE NOT in it for the cuteness. Sure, he's cute, but that's not what makes me attracted (as in pulled towards, not as in "like-LIKE") him. It's the persona he displays while on stage and off. (but then, i'm from the same town as the canal street tavern, so i guess i can't complain. ;p) there were also some big round paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling that were alluded to numerous times during the set, including a *hilarious* "vh1 behind the music" shtick. jian, murray & mike all had english accents. dave... well, it was a surprise to us all to learn that dave was german. (for those keeping track, our german friend was wearing his new favourite yellow shirt, while murray was dressed in a sleek navy collared number. he even wore some horn-rimmed glasses for "sunrise" with tory cassis that can only be described as groovy. murr is turning into the sultan of style, friends.) "when she talks" was dedicated to meg griffen from WFUV, who apparantly requested it that afternoon on the radio. jian complimented her and the radio station effusively and then asked if either she or the other host was in the audience. silence. jian: "well, then, fuck FUV!" he then offered the disclaimer that they don't perform this song very often, and it was a bit out of practice. murray: "well, as if it's ever *in* practice." and, um, in addition to the "uncool to like me" comment, jian also made reference to killing cats again. sounds like someone's been lurking... can i interject here and say how much i thoroughly enjoyed the two opening acts? sean altman is freakin' awesome (even his chocolate was good). his song with jian, though, "your town no more"... wow. when alt.mania comes out, RUN and buy yourself a copy. i'd seen tory cassis in toronto this summer, so a couple of his songs sounded familiar, but seeing him by himself is a totally different experience. "sunrise," with murray, was suitably amazing, but i think we in the front row were the only ones who could hear the murr-man taking the higher harmonies. Aside from the fact that it's extremely cold out today, and i'm incredibly sick (aw puddin) - i still decided to trek the mile and a half in the cold to the show. Thankfully Jill agreed to walk from NYU down to the show and kept me great company. Today's Voice had the same Fruvous ad as it has the last few weeks except that there's a big bubble that says "Tonight and Thursday!" plastered over the picture. apparently there's a dismal review of them in there but i must have skipped over that this morning while looking at it. When we arrived there were only a few people in (no, not on) line and one of 'em was a TMBG fan come to check out Fruvous. (yay!). Perhaps he was there along with the other tmbg fans that were there to check out opener number one... SEAN ALTMAN: I remember the days when the chick (nancy?) that is in charge of his website used to post to the TMBG mailing list claiming that we'd all love Sean Altman's work.. yaddayadda. I always saw her as posting irrelevant crap to the list and then cheaply plugging sean's site. Anyways, i'd heard a few mp3s of his stuff before the show and though he sounded like a mix of New Kids On The Block and Andy Partridge (of XTC). Anyways, i was throughly impressed with his set - i'm totally all about his music now (and no, it's not because he gave us all chocolate when he came out!). The highlight of the show was when Jian came out and sang with him for "town." it was pretty funny cuz jian didn't really know all the words and was just kind of following sean's lead. Checked with his cheat sheet a few times. it sounded really groovy tho... TORY CASSIS: Arrived on stage claiming he was "the extremely late Tory Cassis." He looked like Jason Lee (as jill pointed out) a bit which was entermusing. I really like his work. it was very nice. Murray was the guest star for this one and was "funkin" damn well :) FRUVOUS: Well well. apparently the boys all arived on stage in the exact same clothes they wore on monday.... except i guess jian changed his pants. which may i comment - i think this was the very first frushow i was ever at that jian *wasn't* wearing tight pants. anyways... I'm going to post the setlist and stay away from the banter until i listen to a copy of the show... It's not that it's not worth commenting on - just not as *excellent* as it has been in the past. DOWN HORSE LAIKA 1/2 INDY WENCH LAZY (wow, can i just say *yay* - It appeared as tho they were playing this song for someone that had requested it. not sure but if that was the case - right on with the requestage). KIDZ (before this murray started them on the "definition of fruvous" and dave commented something like "i don't know where fruvous comes from and i also don't know what song you plan on introducing here") MINNIE (fiona snapple!) SPLAT JOCKEY (with guest singer Tory Cassis) *note: splat and jockey were switched in the show VIDEO (disco) TUREEN HOLD MPG RIVER CAR SHIT PSYCHO - ----------- Michy - ----------- King Gr - ----------- Lose (with guest singer sean altman - i kept myself entertained during this song thinking they were singing "loose" anyways...) Drink all in all an amazing show. i chatted with a few of the lads après show. It was actually the first time i ever even approached murray for something other than an autograph. conversation with him was nice - Tory Cassis joined in the conversation in a rather crude yet highly entertaining manner "i haven't done that since i was in 7th grade" Mur: "i know your type - you did that last week!". Ji made my night singing a little ditty to me (always proud my name is jordan*grin* sorry...) :) (and to jill and anita... *grin* no comment but i'm sure you know what i'm thinking!) to all the fruheads i met (and re-met) - it was a total blast, i hope to see you kids tomorrow night and if not - make sure you e-mail me and say "Hey hey!" I really dig the fact that there really is a "fruhead community" on the east coast. It's so much different than the CO shows (not a bad thing - just different). I really enjoyed it and can only hope for as much entermusement tomorrow! :D take it easy, Special J http://www2.netcom.com/~arnot/joda/bootlegs.html http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/3404/frustuff.html ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
