(I've been skipping most of the dance/don't dance posts.) Maybe that's because fans and fan mentality fascinates me, and there has also been a similar situation on www.weirdal.com this week. (Apparently, Al showed a 20-year old fan a bit of attention, and when she gushed about it on the newsgroup, a couple of the more--shall we say "mature"--"Al Gals" on the newsgroup took offense to that and started judging his character and making outlandish accusations about his personal life. One even flat-out accused him of being capable of statutory rape. And these are people who were diehard followers until they had even the slightest information that he might not be the person they thought he was! I find it quite intriguing that they were so quick to judge the object of their affection so harshly. Actually, come to think of it, wasn't there a similar situation here regarding Jian's personal life a while back? Maybe it's more commonplace than I would have believed.) Cassiel104 wrote: > > MAYBE they are getting worried about certain fans who go to three thousand > shows a year and act like Moxy Fruvous owes them something. This is an interesting observation. I've also wondered how much the accessibility the band provides the fans helps create an unrealistic closeness in the minds of the followers. Fame is a double-edged sword. The accessibility helps create dedicated followers, yet it also fuels unrealistic fantasies. I'm willing to bet that as Moxy's career evolves, the accessibility will decrease--simply for security reasons if nothing else. So, enjoy it while you can, everyone!! > These guys see THOUSANDS of faces a > year...MILLIONS even...If they don't look at you and go "HEY! It reminds me when a friend of mine and I were working at Kinko's several years ago. We both kept getting hit on by customers, and we were getting sick of it. One day we were having a mutual grip session about it, when my exasperated friend said, "They just don't get it that I'm being nice to them because that's my JOB. It's not because I'm interested with them. They keep confusing my job with ME." (Side note: If you want to know what it's like to be famous, work at a Kinko's. It's amazing how high-profile of a job that is. When I worked there, I couldn't go ANYWHERE in town without someone coming up to me and saying, "You work at Kinko's! Remember when I came in last month and you suggested I use the mauve resume paper...etc." I actually quit Kinko's when I got my first threatening "fan" letter. Some guy left an anonymous note with the graveyard shift threatening to "hem my pants" if he ever saw me giggling at customers again--whatever THAT means. I didn't wait around to find out. And thus ended my career as a public figure.) > And just because you may go to 30 or 40 shows a year doesn't mean you get any > different treatment then the first timer who is, if you think about it, more > important in a way. I've also recently wondered how much the Internet has helped change the fan mentality. Fans are finding other fans via cyber-land now, and with the knowledge that there is a larger support group than the regional locale provides, maybe the obsession is accelerated faster and on a larger scale than it would be if the Internet didn't exist. For a FruShow, a "sold out show" is really nonexistant, I've found. For the most part, if a show is sold out, you can usually round tix up via the NG, AMMF, or FHDC, and if the net doesn't work, heading to a show nearby and asking around for spare tickets for the next night may work. If not, you can still usually head to the venue and get tickets from people in line. And, if that doesn't work, usually once everyone is in, they have extra tickets to sell at the door. I've gone to probably about 5 "sold out" shows I didn't have tickets for :) > my dad too who was waiting > out in the car and claimed we could have just sat out there and listened to > it.... Yes, for some reason, they decided that, since the Harro East wasn't exactly built for music, they'd just crank up the speakers so incredibly loud that the sound would bounce off the back walls and still come back so loud that the FruLads couldn't hear their own monitors over the echos... - --Novac ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Nov 1999 19:10:57 -0500 From: "Novac" Subject: Kinkos Workers unite and..Calm DOWN cookie wrote in message > I'm not quite sure what prompted this post Erm, neither do I...and I'm curious as to what prompted it...the outlash was kinda severe, and I'm interested in knowing what post(s) started you writing on this... > Some guy left > an anonymous note with the graveyard shift threatening to "hem my pants" > if he ever saw me giggling at customers again--whatever THAT means. One disrespectful person in a whole crowd can kill. In DC, when Jian was talking in his "man of the people" speech, and some buncha people screamed "KoS!!", that's what's gonna kill it for everyone. But it may very well happen...so we need to enjoy and truly appreciate what they do while we can! But (and I hate to admit where I got this idea) do you ever think there might one day be a meet-and-greet thing for Fruheads (aside from FruCon)? Oh, trust me...the Internet makes everything go faster..well, everything *except* for your actual connection. ;) But seriously, I saw a similar thing happen with fans of Mystery Science Theatre 3000. There was a time when the fan base was small enough that they could mail newsletters to everyone...then the show and the net explode...and no more newsletters. It all goes online.
