I went to the 9:30 club show Sat. and didn't have a chance to talk to a friend of mine who was there with a separate group of people, but I got this email from him with the weirdest story so I thought I'd share. Keep in mind, we live in No. Va and this all happened to his soon-to-be sister in law in Philly a few days earlier... "By the way, you'll never believe this! I was at my mom's all day today, and while I was there I found out Sharon met Jian on Thursday. She was in Philadelphia all week on business. Thursday morning (or Friday morning, I forget) she came down to the lobby and saw her friend talking with "this pretty cute guy." So she went to see who he was. They were talking about the Mint (where Sharon works) and stuff. Her friend said that she had saw him on TV the night before (an ad for their concert or something) and when she saw him in the lobby, went up and asked if he was who she saw on TV. (Did I explain that well enough?) He said yeah, and explained to her that he was in Moxy Fruvous and told them background about the band and that they had just played in a concert. He told them he was playing at the 9:30 Club Saturday night and that they should come. He said he'd get them in for free and they could hang with the band afterwards. Sharon passed, as she already had plans with Jeremy. Actually, she had forgotten that I was going, then yesterday afternoon, her sister Christine called her to ask if they were going with me. (I had bitched to Christine that I couldn't find anybody to go). Then she realized i was going to the concert of the guy she had just met. Anyway....enough babbling." Too weird eh? -Nova ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 22:02:45 GMT From: Phillyfru9@aol.com Subject: brain droppings.... Ok, i've been having some random thoughts about fruvous over the past couple of days and when i tell my friends they all look at me like i'll crazy, which is only half true. So i decided to release my thoughts to a different outlet. Well first off, is it just me or does it seem that in the last couple of months there has been an increase in the amount of teenages attending the shows. Now, don't take me the wrong way, i think it's good, i myself being 17. However, i recall back about four or five years ago, when i was first hooked and reeled in at the philly folk fest, most of the concert goers were at least 20. Then the other night at Keswick, i looked around while i was dancing and I was completey surrounded by people my age or younger. Not that i really had a point there, just something i sort of noticed. Something else that i have noticed is that the more popular the boys get, it seems like they are forced to play at venues with seats. I remeber the good old days, (ok, like two years ago) where everyone in the crowd was on their feet dancing and singing along. Now, when people try to get up and dance they either get escorted back to their seats by the ushers, or yelled at by fellow concert goers. True, it is harder to see for those people who choose to sit, but then again, how can you stay still when the boys begin to play My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors, or King of Spain, or so on. Is it just me, or is there other fans out there who are bothered by that fact. Ok, one last thing and i'll shut up, actually this is more of a really stupid story. I was sitting in Spanish today and we were talking about this enviromental crusader from mexico, and my teacher was like who does this remind you of. Of course, i started singing Marion Fruvous. Let me just say i have never gotta wierder looks, well except for the time in physics when my teacher asked a question about entropy and i started singing. It's like, hi my name is katie and i'm a fruvaholic. I seriously need help, is there like a 10 step program or something? Anywho, I'm gonna shut up now, I just had to tell people who have gone through the same thing, well hopefully have. Katie OH yeah, am i the only one who think jian (or jim as the keswick would say) looks exceptional with his hairs cut? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 17:20:21 -0500 From: "Kate Leahy" Subject: Re: Show Review? -(11-20-99) No, I wasn't there *hangs her head in shame*. Thanks! I liked the "Chris: He's Our Man" bit.. =) that was too fun. Chris himself (met him after the show) was really nice, and people kept stopping to say, "Hey, Chris," when they passed him, which he thought was pretty cool. Apparently it was his first time being seranaded by the band during a show :). Jian's whole Man-Of-The-People Micless Dialouge was cool -- except for the madly screaming morons who kept trying to for Cross-Border Shopping and KoS (of course). I (unlucky me!) was stuck in the middle of the Cross-Border Shopping people, who apparently didn't know the words to any of the other songs, because they kept giving me funny looks as I sang along (I knew all the words to all the songs except Nuits de Reve, cuz I don't speak French, the mysterious 3rd verse of Jockey Full of Burbon, and all of Alison). Alison was actually the first (and only) Elvis Costello song I've ever heard; I've never heard Elvis himself. And I ~loved~ Alison. =). Gotta get that for my bday. When Jian was ranting at Dave (I don't even remember what for) and he started going "It's all about Dave here. Dave Dave Dave Dave Marsha Dave Dave Marsha Dave Marsha Marsha Dave Dave", the audience really laughed, it was great. Murray countered that he had gotten a kimono, which was way better than Dave, who had gotten nothing. Mike remarked that it wasn't a real kimono, just a Faux Kimono. I was really happy when they mentioned Murray's Faux Kimono bceause I was the person who made it, tho they went no further with it than to mess around with the words (FauKimono, Fo-Ki-Mo-No, Folk Kimono). Ectually Tobey tried to convince me to give it to dave, but I have a hat for him. The kimono goes to Mur-man. I-95 was good, featured a great deal of Mike Craziness (a special form of craziness), and did Minnie the Moocher, which was tons of fun. the crowd really rocked with the call-and-response. Though, during Psycho Killer, Jian was playing Clap On Clap Off, and there were about ten people who Just Didn't Get It, and kept clapping. We did it maybe seven or eight times before it finally worked. It was sad (funny, but sad). My hands really ached after that. Alison was so great.. I couldn't really keep from crying, but I tried, and since the rest of the audience was remineiscing and happy, it wasn't too bad. All the rest of the sad songs really got to me this time (dunno why, really), and during Nuits de Reve, I was practically sobbing (as unnoticably as possible, for the sake of the people around me, who didn't understand the song at all), especially during the parts I understand ( the whole song has that sad air, and I understand most of it, but specifically the chorus was sad.. "You said you would always love me..") and I don't think anyone else near me understood, because Jian kept looking at me funny like I was dark purple and everyone around me was bright green. After the show he said he'd "seen me singing", and I realized I was probably the only one in my immediate area who knew almost all the lyrics to the songs. I got to meet: Mike Wood Dave (he's so sweeet!) Mike Ford Jian (met him b4) Misch!!! Yaya! Mindy! Yaya!!! (You were so cool, both of you! All of the above, ectually) Mur-man split before the crowd did, I hear, which stunk because i wanted to see him, too, and I wanted all the guys to sign Mustard Girl's tank top shirt I got her for her b-day (she SO wanted to come). Dave sign "Happy Birthday Teresa" which was really nice of him, since everything's better personalized. =). Tobey rules! He's so nice! Plus, he let me eat his Pez, which was also ruther nice (~lipsmack~ :d), and he took the Faux Kimono back to Murray for me, which was really nice since I had no way of getting to Mur. I don't think it's so much that they're being forced into venues with seats as that they're being booked into a wider variety of venues. And I think, for the band, that's a good thing. There's a lot more filthy lucre and arts-events publicity to be had from a show at the Keswick *Theatre* or the Whitaker Center than from a folk fest, even a very highly regarded one, where 100 other artists are performing. When they play Philly Folk or they get a two-line snippet in the Weekend section of the Inquirer -- when they play the Keswick they get to perform and chat on TELEVISION. At some shows I enjoy dancing and bouncing around, but I also enjoy a seated show occasionally -- it sets a different mood, and it means people who for one reason or another can't enjoy standing shows also get to see Fruvous. Not everyone is capable of standing for six or more consecutive hours. I also think that when in Rome it's only polite to do as the Romans do. I.e., at a seated venue, sit until there's an obvious invitation to stand. (Jian was pretty blatant with Disco Bargainville at the Keswick, and with Drinking Song at the Whitaker.) And then when the dance number's over, for God's sake SIT BACK DOWN!!!! if the show isn't over. It IS rude to those behind, who paid very good money for their seats, to have their views blocked in a seated venue. It's not like they can just shift THEIR position so that they can see better - -- they're in their assigned space, and if they stood up so as to see better over the heads of the dancers, then they're being as inconsiderate to those behind them as the standers/dancers are being to them. The Keswick did allow dancing throughout the show on the side aisles, and everywhere during the encores, so I really saw no reason for scores of people to be dancing in the orchestra pit and along the center aisles AFTER Disco Bargainville ended. And yes, I and a bunch of others told them so. Besides, it's perfectly possible to dance in one's seat. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 00:48:47 GMT From: jessa@fruhead.com (Jess) Subject: Re: brain droppings.... Although being surrounded by a lot of teenagers isn't nececarily a *bad* thing, it isn't nececarily a *good* thing. It's like eating too much ice cream or something. At first you think, "Ooh, a lot of ice cream!" But ten bowls in you start to think, "Gee I'm getting pretty tired of being around all this ice cream." I actually would prefer to be in a croud of people around my age (a year younger to about two years older, persay, maybe older), but when a hell of a lot of teenagers show up, it gets kind of annoying, especally if they're shallow obnoxous ones who think they know everything and are the coolest people in the world and won't be friendly no matter how much you try to talk to them! (grr) Sort of like being at school, but here, all the teenagers are basically freshmen again (you know, the freshmen come to the high school and always try TOO hard to fit in with their superiors). Yes, I see your point. I mean, I see the point you weren't making : ) Which, basically, explains why I want to get in to the Westbeth soo badly. If I could take a friend or two, so I don't look like a *complete* idiot ::looks around for Mariam:: miyax - -- For the most Interesting sites on the net, check out the Interesting Link of the Month hq @ http://secondhandwonder.virtualave.net While you're there, check out: *WinAmp Skins - for a change of interface *The American's Guide to Sailor Moon - the title says it all Click on "Return to Main" to access the mini-network. ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #964 ********************************************
