I've never seen a bad Moxy Fruvous show. I've seen a couple of shows that struck me as particularly mellow when I wanted to be up and dancing, and vice versa, but never a bad show. What do I want to see? What would make a show a "10"? I want to see the things that distinctively set their live show apart from other live shows. These are the things I love to see [in no particular order]: 1.) Banter. I love it when the guys chatter. With us, with each other, with each other off-mic. As long as they've got somethin' to say, related to the show, the city, current politics, or what they had for lunch, I want them to discuss. 2.) Improvs. Whether they happen because one of the guys in the band was bantering (see how important that is!), or because some drunk idiot was heckling, or because they're having sound trouble, or need to switch instruments, or need to fix instruments--I love the improv. Whether it's just some song that they're ripping off from someone else, or ripping off their own songs, or making up parodies of somebody else's song, or inserting "random improv melody here," I love when they show off that they can be funny and musical and spontaneous all at the same time. 3.) Energy. I know that touring, doing shows, playing the music is their job. But there are so many times where they're showing so much energy on stage, that we can believe that they truly love what they're doing. Hand in hand with the banter and improvs, if the guys are having fun, it's a good show. I see too many bands who get up there time and time again and let us know that they're tired of doing it time and time again. I'm not saying Fruvous never gets tired, that they don't have shows where you know that they just want to go home... but for there's a great many shows where they show that they love what they're doing, as tired as they may be--and there's a great many shows where they have so much energy they appear to never want to do anything else but play. That's incredible. That's a good show. 4.) Audience. I'm not sure where the "chicken and the egg" thing starts here... there are shows where Fruvous is totally into the audience, and shows where the audience is totally into them. Those are great shows. But I don't know if, at shows I've been to where the audience wasn't great, Fruvous could have given a great show--but was taken down (energy level sucked up, therefore decreased banter and improvs... see, it all comes together) by a drunk or disinterested audience. But sometimes there are crowds totally into Fruvous, and for some reason, that doesn't help the guys. I don't know why that works that way... except that Fruvous sees a lot of people, and sometimes you're just not going to be 100%. 5.) Rarities. Yes, I'm one of those people who think it's a great show if we get "Marion Fruvous" or a Beatles cover, or "Misplaced." There aren't a lot of bands out there that *have* rarities. They play what they play, day in, day out. There are things we can count on being in the setlist, especially when a new album has just come out. But generally there's going to be a couple of surprises in every set, and every once in a while we get a setlist that seems *full* of stuff we only see once a year, if we're lucky. I love those shows, because I want to *be* there when they play... Bed and Breakfast. ;) And, generally, when they pull out a chunk of rare stuff, the guys also seem to be very into the show. 6.) Musicianship. Without being a "jam band" Fruvous manages to pull out all the stops musically, over and over. "Official Improvs" aside, they give themselves room to express themselves musically in a whole bunch of ways during the show. Dave has half a dozen songs where he has plenty of room to improvise his solos and does, we've certainly seen Mike time and time again vary his solos, or lyrics, or both. We know that they give themselves room to scat in Boo Time, as well as improv through Minnie. Every once and a while, when I have shamefully forgotten how talented these guys can be, they startle me by exhibiting their musicianship. And I'm not neglecting Jian and Murray, here. They may not be as flashy with their instrumentality and vocals (wait, did I just say Jian wasn't flashy?) but in their less-than-obvious improv-ing ways, they're holding their own with the other two. Obviously. :) 7.) Songs. I couldn't decide whether I should make musicianship longer, so I'll just talk about it slightly differently. These guys know their craft. They write songs that shows their abilities in the best light. The songs most of us love best are the songs that sound "very fruvous" to us, although we can't really decide what it is. But the harmonies are imperative, the message is required. And we need to see that banjo, that accordion, that dumbek, that tin whistle, that harmonica, that guiro. We need silly songs, sentimental songs, political songs, relationship songs. They're one hard-working band, and hopefully all of us crazy folks who analyze everything to death and follow them over international borders and from coast to coast make them realize that we appreciate that, dammit! 8.) Flow. An incredible show will flow from one song into another, banter and improvs and goofing around included, to make it feel like one big cohesive project, and not a bunch of guys performing a bunch of songs. While they vary the setlist continually, sometimes things have excellent "flow" and other times it doesn't. One of my few complaints about a frushow ever is from the most recent Cinci show that has caused such controversy. I adored that show. But they put "River Valley" right after "Nuits" and it took me half of "River Valley" to be able to get into it, and I love "River Valley." :) I guess that's enough of a thesis for me for tonight. I know there are things that people will have thought that I've left out, and they can feel free to talk about them all they want to. And there are some obvious things I've left out too. But in the end, I tried to discuss things that make a Fruvous show unmistakably Fruvous. I miss the skits that they used to throw in, I used to love that stuff best. But there's more stuff to love, and this band is always growing and always giving us new performances to admire. As I've said before, this is one kick-ass band. ciao, donna ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 12:05:09 -0500 From: tcain1@NOSPAMwebmart.net (Tim) Subject: OT: Beatle Bob (was Re: St. Louis 11/3 set list) In article <7vurd7$fl4$1@newsreader.wustl.edu>, "ALEX J BLOCK" wrote: > > And it was all in tribute to Beatle Bob of course who jumped up on > > stage to jam with the band and scream backing vocals into Murray's mic. > > > So thats why he wasn't at the guster show last night. Does anyone know what that guy's deal is? > Alex Here's a story from one of the St. Louis alternative weeklies from the summer (apologies to those who have seen this already): BEATLE MANIA St. Louis icon (and sometime object of scorn) Beatle Bob celebrates a clubgoing milestone By Randall Roberts One man's obsession is another man's confusion, and a quick glimpse into the curious world of Beatle Bob is proof enough. I'm not sure whether we should celebrate or call the nuthouse, but Saturday, Sept. 25, will be a landmark day in Beatle Bob World. We'll let him explain why: "As you know, I've kept a diary of every musical show I've ever gone to, but for the first time, in 1997 ‹ and I did it again in 1998 ‹ I've went out every night of the year at least seeing one show, if not a double- or tripleheader. At the end of '98, I knew that I'd be approaching this goal and hitting it in 1999, and so I counted up the number of days I needed, and on Sept 25, if I don't miss a show before then, that Saturday will be my 1,000th night out without missing a single show. Every night out. The last day I missed a show was December 24 ‹ Christmas Eve ‹ 1996." That's right. You're wondering why the Beatle is so omnipresent in your world? Simple. He's out all the time. For 1,000 nights in a row he will have seen some sort of musical performance ‹ be it a concert, a club date, a folk show or a gospel get-down. A thousand nights in a row away from home. A thousand nights spent avoiding existential dread. A thousand nights obsessively documenting his musical experiences. A thousand nights in a row out on the town. A thousand nights dancing, dancing, dancing. If you're new to the area or haven't been to a show in St. Louis in, say, the past 20-odd years, and you don't know who the hell we're talking about, Beatle Bob is a guy who (duh) goes to loads of shows and dances his funny dance (next time you see him, note that he often dances in 5/4 time). He's the semiofficial human mascot of the New Orleans Jazz Fest and the grand marshal of some pop festival in LA, and he is achieving the sort of American renown reserved for the most eccentric and endearing of citizens. Many St. Louisans, of course, are annoyed by this fame ‹ they say, off the record, that he's most famous for elbowing his way to the front of shows, carving a large spot in front of the stage by shoving and bullying dance-floor neighbors and endearing himself to bands at the expense of fellow concertgoers. To these people, we say ... well, you've got a good point. But, still, this is quite a feat. And if you're thinking of calling the judges for some rule-clarification, Beatle Bob has constructed his own set of rules for what constitutes a fair night out: "These are full shows. If I write it in my diary, it means I stayed for the full show. Some nights I may see one full show and then head to another club later and only catch a half-hour of a show, and I won't count that. I'll put that in italics as something I've seen, but none of that counts as seeing a full show." Alas, Bob failed to achieve the elusive double whammy, the one that has been on the record books since the legendary Astaire Al both went out 1,000 nights in a row and danced every night. That was 1949. A different world, different times. Bedtime was 9:30 p.m., so all shows got over around 9 p.m. Bob's the first to admit that he's fallen short of that remarkable feat: "I don't dance at all the shows. I'll see something at the Focal Point, a singer/songwriter, and I'll just sit there and enjoy the melodies and words." And if anyone assumes that keeping Bob from dancing would require some sort of restraint (or restraining order), he's quick to respond when asked whether it's hard to keep from dancing: "No. People ask me that all the time, and it's not hard for me to not dance. I'll tap my foot along to the beat, but it's as easy for me to sit there and enjoy the music as it is for anyone else." Of course, we're going to have to take Beatle Bob's word that he's on the up-and-up about this; because he's alone in these endeavors, who's to say that he didn't stay home on Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, because there was a huge snowstorm, bus service was shut down (even more miraculous is that Bob has accomplished this feat without the aid of a car) and, well, there just wasn't anything going on? Of course, no one wants to snatch the spring out of Beatle Bob's step, so we'll take him on his word that he's telling the truth about all of this. The best show he's seen in that time? The Kaisers, at the Hi-Pointe last year. The local band he's seen most often in that time? "Either the Civiltones or Swing Set. It's not necessarily that they're my favorite St. Louis bands ‹ though I like them both a lot. It's more that they open for a lot of bands that I have seen, so I've seen them a lot, too." Bob will host the Hi-Pointe's Sept. 25 show in celebration. The evening will feature music by the Blue Moon Boys and the Bent Scepters. Earlier in the day, Bob will emcee the unveiling of the new Beatles Yellow Submarine postage stamp at Union Station. The festivities will feature an appearance by local Beatles cover band Ticket to the Beatles (with guest musicians Oliver Sain, Fred Friction, Connie Fairchild, Mark Deutsch and others), as well as the presence of Louise Harrison ‹ George's sister. All in all, a landmark day in the history of St. Louis obsessive-compulsive behavior (just kidding, Bob ... and just kidding about Astaire Al ‹ there was no such person). Congrats, or something, Beatle Bob. - -- "Trying is the first step toward failure." -- Homer Simpson ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Nov 1999 02:54:49 -0500 From: lawrence solomon Subject: Cincinnati stuff... Well, I just got back from Charleston[1], and now that I'm at my computer again, I can post my thoughts about the amazing show in Cincinnati... I got to Cincinnati insanely early. And as a side note, I find it a little odd that the taste I'm getting for most cities I've been in recently is only of the places where the clubs are, which isn't at all the whole city. So when people ask me "Oh, you've been to Cincinnati, what was it like?" I get to say "Well, the few streets I saw seemed pretty nice..." :) Bogarts is quite a large venue. Maybe it's just that the floor is considerably larger than some that I've seen, but they don't have a balcony, so it probably balances out. I didn't really expect the floor to be much more than half full. I was wrong, which is a good thing. :) Another plus about Bogarts - I don't know about alcoholic drinks, but non-alcoholic ones are very large and relatively inexpensive. I got something about four times the size of what I got in Columbus for about half the price. Oh yeah, and Früvous were there, too... unfortunately, there was an opening act before them. I wouldn't call them "bad," because they really weren't, but they were *much* too loud. Very non-typical Früvous opener. Since the setlist was already posted, I'll just give my highlights... So after about a half hour, they stopped and we waited. and waited. and waited. Früvous finally came out around 9:45 with the Extended Sahara, which I haven't seen since February, and was quite a nice change of pace from the last several shows I'd seen which mostly started with Half as Much. :) Lots of interesting banter very early in the set, including, to my amazement, a fairly obscure TMBG "quote" ("this band is not grinning scarecrows... here to... torture you..." or something to that effect) and Jian making comments about the treatment of brown guys (and a few other "drinks" - I think if we'd actually been playing the drinking game, we'd all have passed out after two songs - but no one broke any strings for the whole show :) Lazy Boy started with a (perhaps unintentional?) tease for Jenny Washington - Mike at the congas talking about a "talk show host." But they did Lazy Boy as planned, and there was a lot of clapping from the audience during the clapping part... Disco Bargainville... two false starts... first time, some heckler shouted out "FOUR!!!" after everyone else said a "TWO!" the Jian seemed fairly impressed with. But after the "FOUR!" inserted in the silence, Mike started over. The second time, there was no heckling, but during the pause between the "TWO!" and the "at Video..." the audience decided to fill in, and started to sing it. So Jian motioned to Mike to start over once again. They got through the intro that time, and the last line of the song was "No no no Raja, at Video Bargainville!" When Mike and Jian left the stage I knew something cool was about to happen. And we were treated to a duo version of Pork Tenderloin (I don't know if this is the "standard" now - last time I saw it was just Murray) with Dave on banjo and backing vocals. Then they went backstage while Jian and Mike came out and, in a bit more political a moment, described the horror of the policies of people like Mike Harris[2] (yet another tease - but they can't do Big Fish with only half the band, I guess) and played Today's the Day that We Fight Back, which I'd never heard at all before, and I thought the guitar parts were really cool... Then came King of Spain and the Wood portion of the show, where they did Present Tense Tureen, Fly, and Nuits de Reve, which I enjoyed immensely. First encore started with the Billie Jean medley, which I didn't recognize, because, well, I've never heard that one, either (and I didn't recognize the songs anyway - forgive me, I seem to have missed that bit of the music world) And for the second encore, Mike was absent, and Jian began introducing a guest... my first reaction was to think "Oh, Dancing Queen... but wait, they've already done one medley..." The guest was not, in fact, Lou Reed, but was Gord, who, after forgetting a pick, announcing that there was a car with its lights on, and false starting a couple of times, played a nice rendition of Gord's Gold, and was joined by the rest of the band at the end. And they closed with Elvis Costello's Alison, another that I'd never heard before (at all - yes, I'm really out of it when it comes to a lot of music, and yes, I really should change that) Overall, totally amazing show. I keep thinking that I go to so many shows that eventually it will get repetitive, but there's always something new, or, in this case, about 5 somethings new... :) [1] I'll post a review of that separately [2] sorry, I know basically nothing of Canadian politics, other than that this Mike Harris guy is really awful, at least according to Früvous. - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "You knew it was true, when I held you, there were no secrets.
