Unfortunately, my parents are quite unsympathetic. They don't seem to understand this odd disease of frinsanity. For example, my mother thinks that seeing two shows on two consecutive days - and yeah, they're in two different states - is "greedy." Mind you, the said shows are the first two in about several months that have had any hope whatsoever (i.e., allages, sort of in driving distance). Also, I am going away for the second semester of school in 2000, so that eliminates any frushows. Anyway, my point (and I do have one) is that I need any sort of advice, help, ideas ... of any sort, that anyone, youthful or otherwise, could offer. I don't think my parents and family understand what an all-consuming thing Früvous is for me. Hence their calling it "greedy." I'm pretty much out of time here and need some serious advice. So as we're driving we passed a restaurant called "Max and Erma's" (or something like that - apparently it's a chain but hey, we don't have 'em in colorado so....) I was totally exhausted and when i looked up (from laying sideways across the seat) I could have sworn it said "Moxy Fruvous" in the Bargainville font... i was a little tripped out at first but then when i actually realized what it did say... i was feelin kinda dumb figured it must've had some kind of freudian slip action going on there! Then, while i was at CMU - this chick saw my fruvous pin and was like "hey moxy fruvous! But the impression that I got was not that Chad was saying that your post wasn't a review, but telling Chris O that his post was not going to be review... Maybe he will clarify that for us. And his whole post was about how many different viewpoints there are, even on this ng, as to what constitutes a *good* show. He wasn't dissing your opinion, merely stating his own different opinion. Hi everyone! I haven't had time to post in a while. But I've been keeping up :) Something strange (in a good way) happened to me today, though, so I wanted to share: Okay, for last year's final art exam, I did a big pastel drawing of Jian from a picture I had taken (I did a painting of Mur for another art project, too :)) and we had hung out all of last year's exams in the beginning of this year so that they would get a chance to be displayed. Out of the blue today, Sister Ethel (my art teacher) asked me who the drawing was of, because I am apparently "that crazy girl who follows all those bands." A new teacher at my school had wanted to know. Sister was kind of rude, so I was a little hurt (she made some comments that I did *not* appreciate), but she made Ms. Malloy (the teacher) go find me so I could explain the picture to her. Well, when I told Ms. Malloy who it was a picture of she said "I *thought* so!!! I follow them religiously!!!" So we talked a bit about Früvous and she's going to the Keswick and I just found it all *really* cool. I don't have her for any classes, but it's nice to know there are Früheads around :) I guess that's it. It just kinda made my day! love Lizzie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 1999 09:09:35 -0800 From: ACW Subject: Re: On the subject of reviews In article <382B58BD.221E@starpower.net>, Ellen Buckley wrote: > Ummm, Amanda? The issue for me was Chad's tone, which I felt implied that since I haven't been touring since 1996 that I would have no idea what a *really* good show was. I hate the opinion that the best times are past, and I hate to think Fruvous is past its prime. I don't think that at all. After 32 shows in 1999, I like to think I have a clue what I'm talking about, at least in the context of the current tour. I think we're all entitled to opinions. Reviews are just that: opinions, subjective. None of us are professional reviewers who have seen Fruvous once. I'd really hate to think that anybody changed his or her opinion of a show because of a review I posted. FWIW, I think Chad and I were evaluating the show on totally different factors, which leads to differing opinions. The bottom line is make up your own mind, post your own review if you disagree with one that was posted. I apologize for so many off topic posts lately, but I just got back from seeing Sonia Dada and Graham Parker. It was the most AMAZING show! First of all, Sonia Dada blew me away! I haven't been this impressed with a band since....well, you know. Of course, they're in an entirely different genre, but I would HIGHLY recommend seeing them if you ever get a chance. You like harmonies? They've got it. You like gospel? They do it. You like salsa? They kick ass. They've got a singer who sounds like Barry White, and another vocalist who could run circles around Etta James. (Well...OK...at least she'd give her a run for the money.) They played two sets; the first of which was acoustic, and the second was electrifed in every sense of the word. I envy you Chicago folks who probably already know all of this. I also want to add that Graham Parker is one of coolest people on the planet. 'Nuff said. The venue also was killer. They played at Vynyl, which is a relatively new venue. It's about the same size as the Roxy, but it's much more patron-friendly (and it's located two blocks from my office! Gotta LOVE that convenient parking!) So, if you ever get a chance to see these folks, RUN, don't walk. I went in with VERY high expectations, and all the hype wasn't nearly as great as what I witnessed tonight!!!! So endeth my off-topic review. I'll get back to talking about Moxy sometime soon...Really. I imagine they *can* top that, but I haven't seen them do it yet. What made it so special? It wasn't an official show. It was just an after-hours jam -- and that meant they were SOOO relaxed, having SOOO much fun, just goofing around. They played just what they wanted. They screwed up and laughed at themselves doing it. They jammed with Vance Gilbert. They did all this in a tiny little bar with a stage the size of a large table, with sound and instrument problems galore, and it was wonderful. It was my fourth show, and the one that pushed me over the edge and made me a Fruhead. (I've now seen approximately 35 shows, including instores and workshops.)
