Thursday afternoon the Wondermobile and I rolled out of Davis, destination Santa Cruz. I stopped off in San Jose, home of Increasingly Bad Traffic, to pick up a coupla friends, and we headed off. Fortunately we were late (and isn't that a peculiar statement), and traffic over the hill had died down. Once in Santa Cruz, I met a dear high school friend and a bunch of local Fruheads (*wave*), and some of us headed off for a slow but delicious dinner. None of us cared for the opener, a bland guitar-playing singer-songwriter--Jessica dubbed her "the Lady Lee of folk". So we wandered around looking for people... "Hey," said Jessica, "I think I saw somebody from Falcon Ridge over there." "You sure?" I said, trying to think of who this could be. We moseyed over and found--Ladywench! Squee! :D Hugs and chocolates all around! She'd landed only a half-hour or hour ago, apparently, and had come straight from the airport. Shortly after this, the opener finished, and the Frulads came on. I won't say Thursday night was a great concert. I never really got into it. The energy and verve picked up dramatically during the encore, but by then there wasn't much they could do with it... I found that particular show decent at best, although it was nice to hear River Valley, and I think someone already mentioned the great "We love Dave!" chant during "Not the Beatles!" (which was the longest I've seen, and one of the better ones). Armed with chocolate-covered espresso beans [1], I stayed awake during the drive back up to Sacramento, and even took semi-coherent notes in class the next morning. [2] After class (this is now Friday at noon, if anyone's keeping track), I once again filled up the Wondermobile (amazing how those 5-hour car trips will drain a gas tank...) and headed off. Jessica and I got to Stanford at about six, met Taylor and ladywench (hi guys!), who were kindly running a central meeting point. We chattered with them for a while, then went inside to claim spots. Y'know, even though they said the concert would be in a cafeteria, I wasn't really expecting... well, a cafeteria. There was the coffee bar behind us. The frozen-yogurt dispenser to one side. The closed-off food lines to the other side. The long fluorescent lights overhead. It was a... cafeteria. And in that cafeteria were a bunch of people from Los Gatos High. This deserves special mention. I went to Los Gatos High. Nobody had heard of Moxy Fruvous until I, five years ago, got my friends hooked. "Holy cow," thunk I, "What have I started?" The opener Friday night, Cindy Bullens, was a definite cut or two above Thursday night's. I really dug a couple of her songs, but not enough to buy the album. And then, the concert. Ahhh. Friday night's concert was MUCH better than Thursday night's, I found, despite the really crummy acoustics. We got Pisco (only time all weekend!), Ash Hash (!), Dancing Queen (!!), and Oliver's Army (!!!) (unplanned; they just launched into it while Dave had wandered offstage), which I'd never heard before. In fact, it inspired me to get my very first Elvis Costello CD when I went home. Saturday morning I got up early and headed off to San Francisco for the West Coast Live taping, where I found myself behind CHRIS TRAUGOTT?!?!! "What the blinkety-blink are you doing here?!?" I demanded, hugging her. Business trip, she replied. (So, Eric, your challenge was met. Five of us went East for Falcon Ridge. Four of them came West for this tour.) The taping staff asked for volunteers to run something called the Aquaphone. I went, goaded into it by Tobey and Murray (when they gang up on you, there's just no hope :). So, if you heard the taping, "Nicole" was me. I think three of the five Aquaphone volunteers were Fruheads. The show itself was peppered with Fruvous interludes rather than one continuous set. The bulk of that particular show was the awarding of a prize for the best Asian literature... it was actually far more interesting than it sounds, and I'd wager that most of the audience members--and Frulads--bought at least one book. Sedge Thompson, the host, REALLY liked MBLABOA, and he seems eager to have Fruvous back as guests next tour. They're winning converts one by one. >:> Have I yet mentioned how much easy it is to get lost in San Francisco? Caiti, her SO Chris, and I got lost on the way to my car--we (foolish mortals!) tried to cross Golden Gate Park. We began to speculate that we'd fallen through a transdimensional wormhole, or at least strayed into the Twilight Zone, because no one could figure out where we were. All around us were buildings, paths, and vast grassy meadows that none of us had ever seen... we started to wonder if we'd wandered into a sector of the park that was inaccessible during daylight. Fortunately we eventually found my car and proceeded to spend most of an hour driving around San Francisco. Once we got to the venue, we found a line that was already almost to the corner! The opener was again Cindy Bullens, and I liked her stuff a lot better this night. Perhaps this is because she had a little help from a friend... "I'd like to invite a friend of mine on stage," she said, "Bonnie Raitt!" At which point the entire audience thought (it was written in the little thought bubbles that appeared over everyone's head) "No WAY." Way. Bonnie Raitt came on and sang backup on a couple of Cindy Bullens' songs. It was REALLY COOL. [3] So I'm glad I got to see her, and especially glad that it was in a (relatively) intimate venue like the Great American Music Hall rather than an arena somewhere. Then... Fruvous! Highlights included "Down From Above" (I was stunned and delighted) "No No Raja" (yay! Never heard it live before), a snippet of Cher's "Believe" (fully as hilarous as you'd think), Disco Bargainville, and a lengthy punfest from Dave. And then, alas, it was over, and I had nothing to do but drive back to Davis and face the mountain of homework. Only nine months until Fruvous come back, only nine months until Fruvous come back, only nine months until Fruvous come back... [4] - --nicole twn [1] People who know me tend to find that the thought of me eating chocolate covered espresso beans is inherently frightening. I wish to assure such people that I don't get nearly as wired as they probably think. [2] Yes, there was a reason why I drove back up instead of staying in the Bay Area, but it's a long and boring story. [3] I heard tell that Ms. Raitt talked to the Frulads before the show and confessed to being a fan. This apparently left all four Lads struck speechless. Go on--try to imagine this. [4] Based on previous tour schedules and not any official information. Me, I wouldn't mind if they came back in time for me to get my tenth stamp, but I think I'll have to settle for the keychain and pin. *** "Some people think I'm neurotic and all, but I'm not; I just like to think about things over and over and over again..."--Eddie From Ohio Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn Reply-to address is INCORRECT!
